Maybe it’s because when you go over, you can just stay up all day after you get there and then collapse in a heap at bedtime. Coming back didn’t really work that way for me.
It was a complete mess. Mr. AP has to go in–eventually–b/c he’s IT, but he’s going to check on what his staff has done and come back.
Power is being restored and some businesses are starting to open again, but it was just a mess. A couple of Metro stations are closed (trains going through, but not stopping) and traffic was crazy because the traffic lights weren’t working. So actually getting there was problematic, to say the least.
It’s probably easier for him to get into town now. And then he’ll be coming right back.
I’ve been there! We had a day off between the Louisville and Pittsburgh dead shows in 1990, and the locals in Louisville directed us there. Really nice hiking, and he arches and other rock formations were really cool.
Nope. We bought a hiking guide over a decade ago and then kept getting seduced by all those big peaks out west. But since we wanted to save some money this year for house stuff, it seemed like the perfect time to finally get around to going.
Kind of off-topic, but do you think the high costs of everything are going to make people more aware of the little places like that that are closer to home? One of my favorite trips I’ve ever taken with the boys was to Ohiopyle PA, Where we went hiking and biking and rafting along the Youghiogheny, and then finished it up with a day of Frank Lloyd Wright house tours (Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater). And it was only a 5-hour drive from home. We wound up going there because we hsd been hurricaned off of Ocracoke and wanted to salvage our vacation.
I think that’s likely to happen. It’s going to be interesting to see if there’s a boom in our little tourist area. Fortunately, there wasn’t much damage from the floods to the main places the tourists hang out.
I’ve been thinking about this. With the cost of gas, and now that airlines are charging even for the first checked bag, I think that all kinds of local points of interest will be getting newfound attention.
CG with your going to sleep so early and waking up early, well welcome to geezerhood. Just a preview of things to come. 🙂
Andi that’s a great picture today. I like how the sun is shinning through.
AP to bad about the power outages, but great for working at home. I never had that options during my working years, but I’m not sure if I would have had the discipline to follow through on it.
Boran I think you’re right on the local points of interest. How many people live in an area that draws tourist, but they’ve never go to see said points of interest. I know in some of the places I lived, I kick myself for not going to some of the places that tourist flock to.
I’m still trying to decide on my vacation. Should I stay at home or go into town. Although I’ll be going into town on errands anyway, I think the staying at home is a heavy favorite. 🙂
Hey FM. My kids are all going to Ecuador from July 20 to August 4, meaning I will most likely be ALONE with Mr. Nature (((shudder)))….let’s get together someplace cool and eat fudgesicles…
I knew I wasn’t an afterthought, just wanted to get a little jibe in there. 🙂
I think you were probably her first choice because she knows I never leave this place. She’s just teasing me again. :O
Oh BTW, I’m glad to see you got your camera fixed. Have you decided to go for blood at that first shop. I would definitely write a letter to the owner.
Ecuador in July…staying at hostels. Didn’t sound very appealing to me at all. I just never thought about it leaving me alone with the mister. I wish the drive/ferry to where you are wasn’t so damn long…
Okay, the no A/C hostel thing would probably make me opt out too.
I know it’s a hike, but I promise to have a wonderful dinner and chocolate dessert waiting if you come. And you could probably read a book on the ferry…
I have to make a big summary table of a gazillion PE (yup, premature ejaculation) studies for a paper I’ve been trying to finish for weeks now, but I’m really feeling an urge to go Vespa shopping today. Not that it has anything to do with the lingering odor in my car or anything…
And I actually slept till 5:00 this morning. woo-hoo!
Is there a paper on the correlation between summary tables of PE studies and Vespa shopping?
Not too far, we’re only going to Lexington (with a stop in Louisville to go to a really good hiking store). Then Monday we’ll have about an hour drive to the Gorge, which will give us a full day for hiking.
I don’t know…do you think men with PE need to buy bright shiny Vespas to attract a mate? Personally, I thought it was a good way to roll a horror of gas prices and a semi-midlife crisis all into one happy little summertime package. And now that I know I don’t need a motorcycle license if I buy the 50cc version…I’m just picturing doing my farm market and yoga trips on a cute little scooter that gets 70+ mpg.
Really good hiking store in Louisville? Why didn’t we go there last fall? 😉
Maybe we could have told one person that there were shoes involved…and I’m sure chocolate frosting bribery might have worked for someone else, and maybe someone else would have liked to take us all out in her cool ride…
It was a very happy occasion!
And a gorgeous day w/a great setting (graduation in the General Assembly Hall, reception @ Delegates’ Dining Room w/large deck on East River).
swimmer and the other girls in the photo (except #2 from r) head for Berlin next week, then to Greece before they spit up. swimmer goes on to Sweden (duh) and Norway for the rest of the summer.
We’ve had 2 high school graduation parties so far this year. At one, I got to meet a couple of grandparents from Long Island who live near the place I was born. Things have changed just a little since then;-)
Your group seems to be having a good time! Wish I was on the way back to Europe. I want to visit Guernsey, C.I., my mother’s family’s ancestral home.
I’ve been sitting on our front porch, watching the hummingbirds and slurping coffee. Mrs. Dem woke briefly and decided to snooze some more, so its very peaceful at the moment!
Good morning all! I’m thinking of wandering a couple of blocks away from home to see the annual Indiana Heritage Arts show today. Very little to no fuel expended for that trip if we decide to walk.
Thanks Andi! We may even venture into the next county later and wander around over there, now that most of the student hordes have left for the summer, a rare excursion for me.
Apparently I adjusted to CET a little too well last week…and now I’m waking up at 4 am every day. oof.
Well at least you’re not waking up 6 hours earlier. 😉
Yeah, but I’m falling asleep before 8 pm. And right now, I’m ready to nod off again, but I have to get CBtY up for school.
I’m sure it’ll wear off by Monday, but right now it’s annoying.
I’ve always found that I adjust very quickly going over and very slowly coming back.
Maybe it’s because when you go over, you can just stay up all day after you get there and then collapse in a heap at bedtime. Coming back didn’t really work that way for me.
MASSIVE power outages in downtown DC=no work for me!
Well, not quite–I have a couple of things due today, but at least I can work on them from home.
But seriously–it is just a flippin’ mess downtown. NOTHING is operational for about 30 blocks of 14th St, which is pretty much the heart of downtown.
Not to mention there was a small fire in the DuPont Circle metro earlier that was not related to the power outage.
I suppose somebody really didn’t want to go to work today!
Good thing you don’t actually have to go in! It sounds like a mess.

So what are you doing for your vacation week?
We’re going hiking in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge area.
I’ve been there! We had a day off between the Louisville and Pittsburgh dead shows in 1990, and the locals in Louisville directed us there. Really nice hiking, and he arches and other rock formations were really cool.
Have you been there before?

Good morning CG, Andi, AP and Boran.

Hey FM. My kids are all going to Ecuador from July 20 to August 4, meaning I will most likely be ALONE with Mr. Nature (((shudder)))….let’s get together someplace cool and eat fudgesicles…
Save me!!!
I’ll be at the beach July 27 through August 2. You should DEFINITELY come over and visit then. FM can come too – I’ll even buy the fudgsicles.
FM can come too. Gee why do I feel like an afterthought. 🙂
Afterthought or not, if you’ve got fudgsicles……….
You’re not an afterthought! I just know you’re a lot longer drive from our beach than SN is.
Plus, you were her first choice to hang out with, while I was a distant second…
I knew I wasn’t an afterthought, just wanted to get a little jibe in there. 🙂
I think you were probably her first choice because she knows I never leave this place. She’s just teasing me again. :O
Oh BTW, I’m glad to see you got your camera fixed. Have you decided to go for blood at that first shop. I would definitely write a letter to the owner.
Maybe I’ll just drive my jalopy down to Hooterville and kick some of those rels of yours into shape.
You could probably drive to Hooterville, but then Mr. Haney would have to get you out to the farm.
Of course if the rels heard you were coming to kick them into shape, they’d be hiding out on the back 40. 🙂
One more thing: why aren’t they taking you with them?
Ecuador in July…staying at hostels. Didn’t sound very appealing to me at all. I just never thought about it leaving me alone with the mister. I wish the drive/ferry to where you are wasn’t so damn long…

Hi SN. I’d love to get to somewhere cool/cold and eat fudgesicle with ya. Since it will be during July/August time frame I suggest Antarctica.
Let me just check out how to get there and I’ll get back with ya. 🙂
Good morning!
Looks great.
My plans for today are somewhat similar.
We have a somewhat busier day planned than the dogs because we’ve got some errands to run before we go on vacation tomorrow.
Ah, errands…the bane of my existence.
I have to make a big summary table of a gazillion PE (yup, premature ejaculation) studies for a paper I’ve been trying to finish for weeks now, but I’m really feeling an urge to go Vespa shopping today. Not that it has anything to do with the lingering odor in my car or anything…

Really good hiking store in Louisville? Why didn’t we go there last fall?
I think I didn’t believe it would be of interest to a majority of the participants. 🙂
Maybe we could have told one person that there were shoes involved…and I’m sure chocolate frosting bribery might have worked for someone else, and maybe someone else would have liked to take us all out in her cool ride…
Well, yesterday was busy enough with young asklet graduation/reception in the morning and big sister in the afternoon.
Here are some of the proud IB candidates at the end of it all:

Hope you guys have a great time @ vacation.
What a great picture, and swimmer looks so happy!
Sounds like you need a day of slacking after yesterday, though.
It was a very happy occasion!
And a gorgeous day w/a great setting (graduation in the General Assembly Hall, reception @ Delegates’ Dining Room w/large deck on East River).
Wow – I’m glad the weather cooperated for the occassion.
You must be so proud of her. And I’m a little envious of her summer trip.
what is the young asklet up to this summer?
Yes, lots of proud parents around yesterday.
He’ll be here another 3 weeks, then 3 weeks of camp in Norway + another week with me there. Then 3 weeks in Sweden.
What a lovely, happy picture. Thanks for posting it.
We hope so too. The forecast is excellent — sunny and highs only in the upper 70s/low 80s. Yay!
Yay for vacations!

Good morning, ID! Are you having a leisurely morning?
I’ve been sitting on our front porch, watching the hummingbirds and slurping coffee. Mrs. Dem woke briefly and decided to snooze some more, so its very peaceful at the moment!
Sounds very nice.
CBtY just got up, but I’ve had the place to myself for the last few hours, and I love the quiet.
The tourists will be rolling in about 10:00, so I have another hour of peace & quiet left.
Good morning, ID!
That seems like the image of a perfect Saturday morning. I have no porch, but windows open to the backyard with birds chirping away.
The front porch view.
Hmmm…the grass seems to be getting a bit shaggy.
Good morning all! I’m thinking of wandering a couple of blocks away from home to see the annual Indiana Heritage Arts show today. Very little to no fuel expended for that trip if we decide to walk.
and bye ID. Time for me to start my errands. Hope the art show is fun.
Thanks Andi! We may even venture into the next county later and wander around over there, now that most of the student hordes have left for the summer, a rare excursion for me.
We’re not leaving until later but I’ve got lots to do so:
Good morning and good bye … maybe until Saturday, depending on how easy it is to find some internet access.

Good morning, Andi!
Have a great time. Check in when you can!
Nice shot. Have a great time, Andi!
So long Andi & Jim! Have a great time! I’ll miss the enchanted forest photos:(
