Several Midwest states were flooded this weekend, forcing families to evacuate their homes and leave their communities.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the floods.
The American Red Cross is providing relief efforts in Indiana, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and West Virginia. Almost 1,100 workers have been deployed to help out in the Midwest.
Throughout this campaign, we have seen time and again that when ordinary people act together, they can make a difference.
You can help out now by donating or volunteering at a local shelter. Visit the Red Cross’ website for more information on how to help in your town. Let’s rally together to help those who need us now.
Matching their database by address to areas closest to the midwest, the Obama campaign has sent out emails requesting that people either donate to the Red Cross or show up with shovels – be a flood volunteer.
This is it. THIS is why I’m proud to support Obama.
I just received this email from the Obama campaign.
We need your help right now.
In Quincy, Illinois and surrounding areas, the river is expected to crest on Monday or Tuesday.
There are emergency sandbagging operations going on right now and public officials have put out a call for all available volunteers.

If you are not able to make it to Quincy but would like to help, visit the American Red Cross to donate to their relief efforts or find out how to get involved.
Thanks,
Obama for America
I’ve never been asked for anything by any politician besides money. I’ve never received an email that was about anything but politics – who said what about whom – or policy.
Maybe I’m making a big deal out of nothing, but the campaign is using its donor list to get help for folks who really need it right now, and I am so proud to be on that list. I can’t explain it fully, but…I’m glad this person will be President in a few short months.
After 9/11 our “president” only asked us to shop. For the first time in my life I’m proud of a leader I elected.[.]

Now that’s a making a difference!
Btw, how’s are the FEMA -(F^^k. Everybody. Mercilessly. Always.)-folks doing with this second major disaster after New Orleans?
(HT: One Drop, Too Sense for expanding on the acronym)
Bush is off somewhere in Europe, Britain now I think, eating cake and dancing I am sure.
be sure to listen to the words….pretty great!
While Obama rolls up his sleeves and wades in,
McCain issued a press release
“ARLINGTON, VA — U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement on the flooding in the Midwest:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those impacted by the flooding throughout the Midwest. Cindy and I would like to extend our sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones, and stand ready to help those in the Midwest to recover and rebuild.”
From AP
brings up a rewind: McCain and Bush eating cake while Katrina victims waited.
This shows real organization. He doesn’t just have a nice statement and donate to the Red Cross on his site but this email shows is that they’ve apparently accessed their data bases and are very specific in where volunteers in the state or the neighboring states should go, what times, what they should bring and so on.
I think a lot of people wish to volunteer in these kind of situations but don’t know where to go or even who to ask as to how they could help. This answers all those questions right up front and gives you a real starting point.
The value of people working together like this can never be underestimated…working along side others makes you feel like you are part of a community and you are all working to help each other out. That builds on the idea that we are all in this together in this country and not various groups at odds with each other.
Wow. Just wow. Obama is not waiting until January to lead. FSM knows we need real leadership.
I hope they all have bright Obama T shirts on. Unlike Myanmar, we’d like the onlookers and the MSM cameras to see what real Americans do.
Beautiful!
I was thrilled when Al Gore took an airplane to New Orleans and rescued people from a hospital.
I told dozens of people, but then I knew that (for most) if it wasn’t on television, it probably didn’t happen.
I hope modesty doesn’t prevent the campaign from publicizing this.
Obama does the shovel
Isn’t it wonderful to see something besides “Let ’em eat cake” from a person in politics?
FEMA is a sad, sad story, going from one of most efficient, respected government agencies in the 90’s to one today that would have a hard time hitting a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle (as people say out here in the rural areas).
I’ll have a first-hand look at their performance, as our county was declared a disaster last week. We had a double whammy, with an F2 tornado and the big flood a few days later. Thankfully, there were no reported serious injuries.
sorry to learn you’re in the severe weather zone.
are you and family safe and dry, coping as best you can?
Hope the waters recede quickly. We’ll send you some sunshine and blessings.
We’re some of the lucky ones, all we lost was a favorite old mulberry tree in the back yard. Many are homeless. Part of my job is to catalog and value each individual loss.
Thanks for the sunshine & good wishes! I see the weather is predicted to be sunny & pleasant most of the week.
