Barack Obama has a 50-42 lead in the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll, but he has some weaknesses.
While 56 percent of respondents said Obama knows enough about world affairs to be a good president, 72 percent said so about McCain. Head to head, McCain was judged as the one with greater knowledge of the world by more than 2 to 1. The senator from Arizona also holds a narrow edge as the candidate better suited to deal with an unexpected major crisis, and he is more trusted, by a six-point margin, on the issue of fighting terrorism.
What will people say when they realize that Czechoslovakia no longer exists?
Thanks, Steny, Democrats now give congress an 11% approval rating. Well done.
Obama just gained two upper legs.
A repost
Overnight we made a complete U turn on Iran.
We are sitting down to appease following on the recommendation of that very naive youngster Obama.
Significant U.S.policy shift on Iran. Bush decides he will join high levels talks.
Obama makes another good move. Ross to join Obama, Reed, Hagel in Middle East trip.
Hark! There is hope!
Now Obama only needs to let us know that he won’t disrobe and put on the furry handcuffs when ever APIC wants.
That is not a good move at all from the Palestinian point of view. It goes right along with his puppy-dog obsequiousness toward AIPAC, and is yet another signal as to just how unbalanced an Obama administration would be in favour of Israel.
As far as Arabs are concerned his foreign policy group sucks and is getting suckier.
I’ve never understood why crashing your plane and being taken prisoner results in foreign policy expertise. That’s really about all McCain has going for him in that area. It’s kind of like saying somebody who fell down a well is now a qualified hydrologist.
Don’t you think the McCain edge here is really pretty much just age and being a pol forever? To most Americans, foreign affairs — especially with the Bush fear campaigns — is a scary and unfathomable place so you go with the gramps figure instead of the brash kid. I think at some point before the election though, people are going to realize that McCain would be really scary as CIC because he’s nuts. You can only get away with letting grampa out of the attic and posing him before the cameras for so long.
.
His father John S. “Junior” McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe later becoming commander of American forces in Vietnam while McCain III was being held prisoner of war. McCain III’s grandfather John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.
During his relative short stunt on flight status, McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft, four in accidents and one in combat.
For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
“You can only get away with letting grampa out of the attic and posing him before the cameras for so long.“
What makes you so sure of that? They let Poppy Bush’s dimwitted son out of the basement, and look what happened?
But I want to know McCain’s approach to Siam, the Belgian Congo, and the Ottoman Empire.
I want to know when he is going to get us out of the war in Sumeria.
…but let’s ask McCain about domestic matters.
What’s his position on Free Silver?
Don’t know what’s worse, that McCain doesn’t have a clue who lives in this modern world or that he jumps right in and makes up shit to defend the position against ghosts. And to top it off not only his audiences but MSM doesn’t get it either, no one even laughs.
Worse yet, someone in his campaign may know something about “framing” issues and realize that “Czech Republic” doesn’t have the same resonance and “Czechoslovakia” when they are trying to sell their ahistorical “appeasment” meme. They probably had to explain it in simpler terms to J-Mac.
The Ottoman Empire, currently at war with the Klingons. Link to follow.
j-mac’s allied with the Borg tho, b2…

THE GENERAL: THREE NEW POLLS
So I guess this will qualify as a “statistical dead heat” on Wolf Blitzer’s show tonight.
One thing for certain, these polls are really good news for John McCain.
Yeah, “Why can’t Obama put him away, close the deal?…Obama has a problem with ……”
Matt Yglesias’ post today, Everything is Good News for McCain kind of covers it.
Which is why I would rather jam steak knives into my eardrums than listen to the mindless evaluations of “The Horserace” from our political pundits in the corporate media.
people won’t realize a thing as most people probably did not know that Czechoslovakia hasn’t been a country since 1993..and this from a man who has been to Germany for security conferences..
Ingrid
Well thats obvious, send the army over there, find out whose stolen it aaand make them put it back. If they can steal Checkeslovakia, how long before they stel Canada, then there’ll be nothing between godfearing people and those communists in Russia.
How could any right thinking voter vote against a man who is going to rescue a friendly country, unllike that Obama character whose more than willing to let whole countries be stolen.
Its the one real electoral hope for the republican party.
Barck just needs to visit a few countries t erode McCain’s advantage – see http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2008/7/16/151724/944
Sometimes I wake up at 7.30 AM and at this time it’s usually Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN.
The topic he discusses morning after morning with the same sour looking panelists is exactly wha you are discussing here, McCain’s advantage and experience in foreign affairs.
Their discussions usually sound like monologues from asylum house, nobody listening to anybody, it’s just idea, impression, image what is counted.
Sometimes correspondent (yesterday he was in Baghdad) from Kabul airport is allowed to speak but for 1 minute.
No matter what’s really happening in Iraq or Afghanistan, the surge is working.
Are these panelists live on the same planet as I am or on Mars?
The right question should be not who has better knowledge but whose McCain’s [or Obama’s] knowledge of the world is more distorted.
American politicians fed by their Murdoch media spoons spectacularly failed to adapt to realities of the world, as they were living in illusionary worlds.
Brute military might is no guarantee of success in suppression of people who wants to live independently, one needs to win hearts and minds.
Chinese failed to do that in Tibet after 60 years and Americans will learn that in Iraq and Afghanistan eventually.
When? When expences of 10 bln dollars a month for overseas wars will be too much to swallow for even such giant economy as US. Harbingers of system crisis are already here, failed mortgages, bank troubles. System crisis is when one sector fails, managers rush with their remedies, then another sector of economy goes into trouble.
Something similar happened in erstwhile Soviet Union which was plagued by systematic economic crisis. Why economic troubles came to haunt Soviets? Many thought it was drawback of planned economy, others accused bureaucracy, but the truth was simple – Soviets lost 10 year war in Afghanistan.
