There are a lot of rumors swirling around that John McCain will announce Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal as his running mate on Thursday. A lot of it is being driven by Bob Novak, but it is also being driven by the mere fact that McCain is deviating from his swing-state focus to travel to Louisiana that day. I’m very skeptical of this speculation.
From an historical perspective it would be unprecedented to name a running mate more than a month before the party convention. The selection of a running mate offers a prime opportunity to seize control of the media narrative for the better part of a week. And the timing of the announcement is usually reserved for a week where you will get the most bang for the buck. In McCain’s case, the perfect time is immediately after the Democratic National Convention. With Obama, presumably, riding high off his nomination in front of nearly 80,000 adoring fans in Denver, McCain can use his announcement to cut short the love-fest and refocus the media’s attention on the upcoming Republican National Convention in Minneapolis.
The media is increasingly bored by the parties’ conventions and they keep trimming back the amount of coverage they provide. If the vice-presidential pick has been known for six weeks already by the time the Republican convention gets underway it will be hard to get the press to even cover anything more than McCain’s acceptance speech.
And this Thursday seems a particularly inopportune time for McCain to make such an announcement. It might be the only day of this election cycle when the announcement of a running mate would not be the number one story on the nightly news. That is because Barack Obama will be in Berlin on Thursday addressing a crowd that could approach a million. If McCain thinks he can short-circuit coverage of such an historic event by announcing that Bobby Jindal will be his running mate then his mind is lost in either Czechoslovakia or the Iraqi-Pakistan border region.
However, I won’t be totally shocked if Bobby Jindal is eventually nominated as the vice-presidential pick, or even if the decision is made official (but not publicly announced) on Thursday. McCain’s choices are few. Most seasoned politicians have little interest in joining a race that looks increasingly doomed. But some younger up-and-comers would see it as an opportunity to raise their profile for a race later on down the line. Gov. Jindal fits that profile. Jindal is only 37 years old (two years older than the Constitutional minimum age requirement). He’s Indian-American (Asian, not Native). His political experience is mostly in the House of Representatives, but he has seven months experience as a state executive.
McCain would make news by selecting an ethnic minority and it would help in states like Virginia and New Jersey that have heavy Indian populations. On the other hand, McCain and Jindal would make a very odd couple. Their age disparity would be unprecendented (McCain is almost twice as old as Jindal). Jindal is ten years younger than Obama and even less experienced in foreign affairs. Jindal isn’t an idiot like Dan Quayle, but his presence on a stage with John McCain might seem equally jarring.
Yet, the Republicans are increasingly becoming a party for old, rich, white dudes. What better anedote for Macaca could there be than Jindal? Moreover, what better options are there for McCain?
I can see Jindal on the ticket. I can’t see it being announced on Thursday.
i hope it is Jindal.
in short, he is almost certifiably crazy, and teamed with Mr Memory, should provide a bit of entertainment for the fall.
Indeed. Republicans will be thinking “Should McCain pass away in office, we get a President with considerably less experience than even Obama.”
I don’t see it happening. All the dog-whistle shots across Obama’s bow will start being applied to Jindal by the “We don’t trust McCain” arm of the GOP.
While I respect Booman’s logic…the GOP is not operating on logic right now. They are operating on knee-jerk reactionary fear.
I still expect Romney.
My gut tells me Romney, but my heart tells me Jindal.
What’s a girl to do?
Looks like Romney’s making a $45 million bet that it’s him.

McCain has zip and needs something, anything to over power the headlines emanating from Europe.
Btw, here is a must read profile on McCain. The political reinvention of John McCain
Don’t underestimate Jindal. He got a lot between the ears. He’s a Rhodes Scholar who believe in creationism and tradition. He may take over the ticket but with rednecks the question of being a full-bloodied American will arise.
Should McCain settle for Jindal, it’ll be a wide open message he’s choosing skin tone to go up against Obama. That alone will drive up the numbers of A-As going to the polls.
In this election cycle, the GOP’s (R) brand has time expired…seven years beyond usable date.
The only way that I can see him making that announcement on Thursday is if Obama’s Berlin speech is also scheduled for Thursday. McCain might be trying to create a major event to counter Obama’s game-changing major event, limiting the media coverage of Obama’s speech to one news cycle.
Maybe Friday would make more sense. He wouldn’t have to compete with the Berlin speech, but would allow only one day of coverage of it. His pick would then be the topic of discussion for the weekend talking heads.
Please nominate Jindal. The man claims to have pErformed an exorcism. He fervently believes in creationism. Tie him to a chair and extract his views on any number of subjects and you’ve revealed a raving lunatic in a suit and tie. He renders Orrin Hatch sane by comparison, no mean feat. Please McCain, have at it. Much fum will be had by all. OUT, OUT YE FILTHY DEMONS, LEAVE THIS POOR WOMAN ALONE!!!
First post. 🙂
In watching the McCain floppery, I have to wonder if the also-rans in the GOP race are kicking themselves for not trying harder. I just can’t believe that McCain is so bad!
I admit that the Iraq and Afghanistan portions of the trip have given me a new shot of hope, but it’s a long way to Election Day.
Jindal gives me the creeps, especially with his creationism bent.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Thank you. I like the vast majority of the commentary here. 🙂
Jindal has a funny problem: he lies like all the other Republicans do:
Think Progress on his comments about Katrina damage
I dealt with the Louisiana Dept. of Health and Hospitals about 12 years ago when Jindal the boy wonder was its head. He took an already wild west system and deregulated it even more. Louisiana had too many hospitals, too many crooks, and its only gotten worse.
So he’s a neocon Milton Friedman fanatic — profits via destruction.
Pig.
You assume that McCain wants the general public to see the drooling wingnut freeptards that currently constitute the GOP.
With Faux-only coverage, the GOP convention can dogwhistle to the true-believers without restraint, while the general public is unperturbed by the insanity in their midst.
Sort of like a Nuremberg Rally by invitation only.
jindal seems an extremely long shot, especially given the background noted above.
my money’s still on kay bailey hutchison…for a lot of reasons, not the least of which, her potential appeal to the disgruntled clintonites.
and l think the timing’s all wrong. more likely just stirring the water w/ rumors, which the msm is obligingly picking up on. so whether he does or doesn’t he’s/it’s still press.
Ooh, this is a little odd: Flag Sale!
that’s been an sop for all sens and reps for as long as l can remember. there’s an entire crew that spends all day every day just raising and lowering flags at the capitol…it’s really kind of bizarre. they run them up the pole, run them down…repeat.
beats getting one from a casket.
Bizarre! For extra money, can I have an entire state senate weep or bleed on my flag?
aren’t Gov.’s of Louisiana usually indicted by a Federal Grand Jury sometime during their tenure and then acquitted??
Go ahead pick Jidahl it will remind me McCain was eating cake with W while New Orleans was being flooded and its citizens were dying at the superdome.
Why did I think the title of this post was, “Will McSame Announce His Pee-Pee”??
You can tell when it’s been a while since I’ve been on the tubes…!!!
Sorry…carry on. 🙂
