It’s been way too long since I posted one of these. I keep thinking I want to wait until I have something finished to show (because everything I’ve been working on is sort of boring), and now I’m giving up on that.
First up is the linen wrap cardigan that I’ve been working on:
It’s made up of 5 rectangles of varying sizes (1 back, 2 fronts, and 2 sleeves), and I’m almost finished the last sleeve. I would have been finished earlier this week, but I got carried away while knitting in the car on the way home from the beach (10 hours on the road will do that to you), and had to rip back because I knit too much! Then I had to rip back a second time because I was afraid I wouldn’t have enough yarn left to sew the pieces together. I think I’m good now. Just have to put it together.
Next up: My little Lace Ribbon scarf. I’ve been knitting on this eveyrwhere I go this summer- Italy, Austin, algebra class, the orthondontist, the Vans Warped Tour concert, you name it. I only have a little further to go, and then it’s done, but its not quite finished yet either.
To make up for the lack of knitting pictures, I guess I can add some gratuitous vacation photos.
I loved this sign on the coffee shop bulletin board in Ocracoke:
And check out the unexpected catch in CBtY’s crab trap:
That’s all of got. What’s needling you?
of your thoughts…
Thanks for putting up a Knitapalooza – with all the nasty political stuff & a new war going on, it’s a nice break!
Needlework is definitely a sanity saver, isn’t it? π
Is it ever!!!!
I just finished one pair of socks
These are Vinca yarn, color #8, knit on size 2 Harmony dps in the blueberry waffle stitch. I love the yarn and the long color changes, but skein two didn’t match skein one very well so my socks are “fraternal” twins instead of identical.
And started another pair
Vinca color #551. I’m past the toe increases now and experimenting with changing the lace pattern of WendyKnits Seaweed sock to a different stitch count.
I’ve also been working on lap robes that will go to a local hospital:
This one is in the “box”, “crazy” or “brain-dead” stitch. Lots of fun to do.
Queen Anne’s Lace (with a little help from a feline friend)..
And a few toddler hats just for a change of pace (and needle size)..
Love the Vinca socks…how has that been to knit with? I can’t wait to see your version of Wendy’s Seaweed pattern.
I was thinking of you this week: I decided I could try a little charity knitting myself, and signed up to do a 4-inch stretch on an blanket for the Special Delivery Unit at a local hospital. It’s only a 4-inch strip, so it’s a smaller commitment, but I thought I’d give it a try.
Ive been working on the last of my scarf while watching the Olympics and waiting for Dara Torres’ race to come on tonight…getting closer to finishing. It’ll be my first lace blocking project, so I’m excited.
Oh the colors of yarns! How in the world do you make a choice?
I was thinking of your knitting (and those who share their work) as I read about countering depression in Scientific American Mind:
+ Rates of depression have risen in recent decades, at the same time that people are enjoying time-saving conveniences such as microwave ovens, e-mail, prepared meals, and machines for washing clothes and mowing lawns.
So, knitting is good for mental health. But then, you knew that. π
I agree – knitting & crocheting keep my hands busy and that’s soothing. The fact that I’m a member of a charity knitting group means that I can knit to my heart’s content and there will always be someone who needs the results.
By the way, love the description “fraternal socks” – I have some of those.
I also think I read somewhere earlier this year that knitting and trying more complicated patterns helps maintain cognitive ability as you age, but I can’t find the link.
It’s definitely a huge stress reliever for me. It’s also been nice to have something to work on while watching the Olympics (otherwise I just fall asleep). And how about that Dara Torres?
Those baby hats are sooo cute! I finally finished the baby sweater I made for a coworker, but will have to post when ask (finally)gets back. He’s shown me about one hundred times how to do it, but of course I was barely paying attention.
CG – I have your phone number on a post-it stuck to my office laptop. Been meaning to give you a call for our knitting-down NY meet-up. Now I am determined to dial it tomorrow. Have not touched a knitting project since June. Can’t wait to see more knitting projects from everyone else!
Hey, I sent you an email with the new number…I was just thinking it was time to pick out my yarn for our project. π
Hi everyone, well for once I don’t have any projects, sewing or needlework. I’ve lost my spark for crocheting, I need to get it back so I can work on some Christmas gifts. Any suggestions for that?
On the other hand I love the work that CG and DB have done.
Does anyone else have trouble working with yarn when it’s hot.
It was a little warm working under the afghans & lap-robes last month, but not too bad. It’s only 63° here this morning, so a nice warm lap-robe would be a good project {g}.. Socks, hats & scarves are small enough that you don’t need to sit under them.
I suppose I am just making excuses. I have tons of yarn and need to put it to use, my sister is nagging me to get going on something and I am just such a good procrastinator at times, that is when I am not in my obsessive phase of anything. Once I get bit by the bug I am good for a long stretch.
For example my current obsession is video game playing, ‘world of warcraft’ to be precise, so that I don’t have time for much else. Right now I am going to jump over to that game and mount up on my great flying gryphon and explore new lands. LOL
Have fun! I haven’t been able to get into computer games since they went high tech. I used to love the old text adventures.
I completely understand, Diane. I am currently obsessed with a new (to me) video game called Tales of Legendia. There are several “Tales” games and I have played two others obsessively before.
I’ve also been on vacation for the past 10 days, so between that and the new game, I haven’t done squat knitting wise. I played with some cotton and made a dishcloth with a pentacle, and I played around with some sock yarn and some tiny needles. I knit a swatch on size 3 needles and another on size 1. While I knew swatching was important, this exercise really made me realize why. I finished a scarf, which I think I posted about last time, though haven’t blocked it yet. I went to a sheep and fiber festival, but wasn’t too impressed. All in all, I’m sort of in between projects and still very much trying to learn more before attempting new things.
P.S.: I have avoiding World of Warcraft (or World of WarCrack, as my friends like to call it) for just this reason. I don’t really like playing on-line, but I know it would suck me in for months at a time. :>)
I work on lighter smaller stuff in the summer. The though of having sweater pieces in my lap in 90-degree weather makes me cringe. My wrap cardigan is made out of a linen yarn, which is much better for summer knitting.
Why don’t you go on over to Ravelry.com and put yourself on the list for an invitation to join? The wait is only 3 or 4 days right now (you are definitely not the only one who doesn’t want to pick up heay yarn in the summer, LOL), and then you can search their pattern database for lots of great crochet ideas, and many of the patterns are free.
I’m not sure why the one lap robe photo disappeared, but here is the current stage of progress. I still have maybe 1/3rd of it left to do..
CB, the Vinca yarn is a bit splity, but not too bad. I like knitting with it because of the long color changes – sort of like Noro but far far cheaper. Here’s how far I’ve gotten on the newest sock.
Pretty lap robe colors. And the wide, subtle color changes in your sock are very nice.
It’s always fun to see what’s been going on. Thanks for posting this, CG.
