Previous Friday Foto Flogs
A quick post before bed and/or the power goes out again.
Our first homegrown artichoke. Considering that the artichokes only got watered when I rinsed the slime out of the dog bucket, we were lucky to get even the one flower/fruit.
I love the “design” of artichokes. Even better, I love them dipped in butter. 🙂

Yay, there’s power (off for most of last evening) and ImageShack (which has been down this morning), all at the same time.
The fruits of our garden:
This mushroom, plus an additional 10lbs of ones just like it, came up last fall under the straw mulch in our herb and lettuce beds.
Boysenberry pie, from our very own boysenberries. I made the cutting board its sitting on from a piece of Tasmanian Sassafras wood, which is known for its spectacular contrasting colors.

The herb garden is so lovely — and tasty too, I’ll bet.
I think the bunnies are the greatest beneficiaries of the herb garden’s largess, but yes, we do love our fresh herbs and cook with them almost every night during the growing months.
And yes, we know how lucky we are.

Thanks. Unfortunately the late frosts have made this a very bad year for the garden, and the tomatoes in particular. We have a few survivors and may get a small harvest eventually. Fortunately we are friends with a family who have a market garden, and have put in an advance order for 50kg/110lbs so we can make (and preserve) enough pasta sauce to get us through to the next year.

Yeah, they were everywhere after the summer flooding. We kind of disturbed him/her while it was digging in the leaves.

This is food for the mind and body, one of a handful of sulfur springs in the area. Yes, the water really is that color.
I apologize for missing that couple FFF. I haven’t gotten out much recently and I also missed stopping by one week. Also, I’d like take the opportunity to point out I started a new blog to concentrate on my photography in an effort to separate it from Phillybits. It can be found here and so far only has a handful of posts but hopefully, that will increase as time goes on. I’m not big on the WordPress format and am still getting used to it but…eh, whatever.
Anyways, here’s my submissions for this week’s FFF.

It was actually a trial HDR created from a single RAW. Although it’s still grainy, I love how it came out.

Mmm, tamales. When I lived in Texas, our next door neighbors (who were Mexican immigrants, and some of the best cooks I’ve ever known) made tamales and they were amazing.
it’s that magical time of year. i can’t wait to get to my parents’ casa next week to gorge on them.
I think I can smell it cooking frm here. What time is dinner?

I’m really taken by the color of the chives against the gold of the lamp.
Christianity began in Syria, and Ma’lula is one of many important ancient Christian sites there. This vender drives his truck up and down the streets – kind of like the ice cream truck in the U.S.
Forgot to mention that he sometimes hands out samples to induce people to buy.
I’m pretty sure I could be induced to buy, with or without samples. Never thought a pickup truck could be beautiful. 🙂
I would love to have him drive through my neighborhood (well, at least drive through a nearby area with a neighborhood – we’re rural enough that we don’t even get mail, much less vending trucks).

This is the first time tonight I`ve been able to access BT.

And suddenly, high in the mountain, you come upon this small valley
This is a wonderful set of shots but the last one is especially appealing — there’s something about the patterned land sitting in the “cove” that I find very appealing.
It really is something amazing to come upon and look down into. It’s much more interesting in person, too. Next visit, assuming I get up there for a few days, I will try to spend more time and get some better shots of it.
Part of the appeal, I think, is the sense of separateness — while I know it’s probably an illusion, I look at it and feel it’s somehow another world from everything around it.
No, that is exactly how it feels. You look down into this valley and you feel you are looking into another world, and you find yourself very curious about it, and about the people who live down there and work that bit of land. And you wonder how long it has been like that and how it got that way.
My husband and I often hike in areas of the southwest where we will come across ancient ruins. These are often in alcoves and we’ll go in and sit in the alcoves, looking out at basically the same land the original peoples would have seen. There will be no one around and the only interruptions in the quiet will be wind and bird calls. Time and place fall away and get replaced by a strong sense of connection, a wonderful feeling. Your picture evokes the same sense.

Ah, the heart attack plate – my favorite! (I remember someone doing a study of Mexican food in New Mexico that concluded the chile relleno had the most fat of any dish – and this is from the State that gave the world Navajo fry bread, mmmmmmm.)
