Welcome to Friday Foto Flogging, a place to share your photos and photography news. We were inspired by the folks at European Tribune who post a regular Friday Photoblog series to try the same on this side of the virtual Atlantic. We also thought foto folks would enjoy seeing some other websites so each week we’ll introduce a different photo website.
This week’s theme: Happy Holidays.
Share your celebration of the season, whether it’s a religious holiday, secular festivities, or just pleasure in the passing of time.
Website of the Week: TWIP: A blog about photography by professional photographer Scott Bourne where you can find great photos, good tips, interesting discussions, and fascinating podcasts.

Cool costumes. Were there from this year’s mummers parade?
yeppers.
It was a lot of fun being out and seeing the parade as well as getting shots. I haven’t made it to the parade in several years due to either Elliott being too young or the weather simply being way too cold.
This year both worked somewhat in our favor.
stand strong,
Very cool colorful costumes. I like the dichotomy of an Alice in Wonderland costumed character, communicating via a Star Wars speaking device.
I`m glad you got to see the parade, in addition to being able to share these beautiful captures.
Love the colour and flamboyance. And great capture. What lens did you use to get these – were you close? I like the sharpness of the photos.
Happy New Year to you and your family too … oh, and I saw the photo of Elliott and his stamps! Now that is too cute. 😀
For the most part, I used the 55-200 because as the crowds grew in size along the streets, it was often easier to get in front of the crowd and shoot at them from a distance.
I decided to pull my old D1X out of the closet, dust it off and use it. I am a little upset at Nikon for not sealing other non-pro Dslr’s. I knew they didn’t and thought it wouldn’t be a problem. Now it looks like my D40 is headed in for service as there is sand getting in behind the lcd screen, dirt on the prism, and something rattling around inside. I am hard on equipment but never dropped it and it is a little over a year old. I just didn’t think I’d be sending it in so soon.
Anyway here are some shots from this weeks trip to see ICE at the Gaylord Palms. I don’t usually post this many but it was a good exhibit.
These are fantastic. Really makes me want to go (and I don’t like to go anywhere).
Oh, those are neat! I love the polar bears and the ice tunnel.
BobX,
The immensity of scale here boggles the mind, even though I have no idea where this is, nor what the Gaylord Palms means.
It certainly seems like a perfect place for mushrooms though.
Very nice fantasy land. A cameraman`s magnet for sure.
I think the one with the three waving characters is the best, & now that I think about it, the alligator in that shot suggests it`s Christmas in swamp country.
Thanks for the comments, guess I should clarify. Gaylord Palms is a huge resort, hotel, and convention center just outside of Orlando proper at the front door of Walt Disney World. Every year for the past five they put on the ICE show. They bring ice sculptors in to create a huge winter wonderland. Indoor temperature, 8 degrees.
It is absolutely huge is scale and Mrs.X appreciates the vote.
I was anticipating Florida pictures (not sure exactly what that might be – swamp trees with Christmas lights?). As I first looked at your photos I thought maybe it was all plastic, though I did notice your wife had on a heavy duty coat. I was still “oohing” and “aahing!”
8 degrees – real ICE! Wow! Cool 😉
Your right it almost looks plastic in person, there is a wall that you can touch to feel that it is real ice.
That’s disappointing about your D40. I remember reading something at flickr I think, about someone getting some dirt back in behind the LCD of their Nikon, though I can’t remember which model it was. When you get it back, are there things you can do to prevent it from happening again?
Thanks for getting your old cam out so we could share in the festivities as well. Looks like a winter wonderland … very kewl. Love the ice tunnel too, and the perspective (and scale) in the second last photo … and all the colours.
Unfortunately, short of taping over everything that leaks with gaffer tape, not much. It looks like I’ll be using the old cam as a field cam and leaving the d40 home or using it where it won’t be exposed to excess dirt. Even worse here in Florida is the sand, and it’s everywhere, can’t be too good on the inside of a camera.
Glad everyone is enjoying the pics so much.
Very, very cool!
A few Holiday Seasons ago, I put names to some familiar BooMan faces.
At the risk of being repetitive, I post them again. See who`s who the way you know how. Some newer members might not remember “Kidspeak”, but she is in here, along with Mary b, Omir, Olivia, Keres, Cabin girl & others. As a matter of fact, even the boss BooMan, showed up.
hmmm. I don’t remember which one I am. I’ll rule out the guy with the beard. 🙂
This was posted as Maryb rocks I think.
I don`t know how to access the BT archives, but this is definitely the image, along with the one in my post above, that is you.
I hadn`t mistaken you with a beard either.
Right, now I remember. Those blue eyes are just like mine 😉
Those are really fun — especially now that you’ve posted the “legend”. I think keres’ and olivia’s are my favorites/best fit.
I saw a Henny Youngman quote recently and thought of your sig line. His went something like: I considered atheism, but they don’t have holidays.
By the way, you have great toys!
I forgot all about these! Brings back memories … 🙂
In order of appearance.
There are a few I can`t find, but I will add Andi & Wilderness Wench, as soon as I find them.

That was a fun idea! I looked up the characters the hard way through the photo file names.
Every year Imogen and I take a trip as an anniversary present to ourselves. It might not actually fall on our anniversary, or have to be combined with other celebrations like birthdays or the xmas holiday break (like it did in 2008).
2004, Wine Glass Bay, Tasmania (taken with a funky barrowed digital camera).
2005, Bruney Island, Tasmania. This “cabin” has a hot tub that was essentially a bath tub that you built a fire beneath. There was a wide board in the bottom of the bath to keep you from burning your butt.
2006, our cabin at the Huon Bush Retreats on Mount Misery, Tasmania. This where we stayed on the trip where we walked to South Cape Bay.
2007, Bell Bird Cottage, Stewart Island, New Zealand.
2008, the Blow Hole at the Bay of Fires, Tasmania.
Happy anniversary! It looks like you had a fantastic time. All the cabins are looks wonderful but the one on Bruney Island looks especially wonderful — which is unusual architecture and the way it’s nestled into that verdant border.
Those spots all look intriguing! Is the window glass in the Bruney Island cabin curved or is it just an illusion?
Not an illusion. The whole front of the “Cockpit” is large panels of glass, gently arced at the joins.
I just looked up the place, and horror of horrors, they replaced the funky hot tub with a real one. Another quirky Tasmanian oddity goes mainstream. Sigh.
Still, it has a fantastic view.
That spot is a{maze}ing;-)
Yep, you get your own maze to wander.
The view is northward from the south half of Bruny island to the north half of the island. You can just make out the joining isthmus just above the right edge of the maze. Little Blue penguins nest on the isthmus.
Bruny Island is in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel just south of Hobart. It’s a 20 minute ferry ride, which makes it do-able for a day trip.
That is so lush … it’s beautiful.
Since we live in the dry part of the state, we often pick the “wet” spots for vacations. Besides, when you’ve got some of the last remnant Gondwanaland temperate fern forests, it’d be a shame not to have at least a yearly stroll through the Paleozoic flora.
I prefer the traditional white Christmas, having done without for quite a few years when a south Florida & Caribbean resident.
Embellishments to the reindeer decorations were provided by a waitress friend from the restaurant across the street.
Folks your way have a good sense of humor 😉
The wait staff at that particular restaurant can be quite “ornery”, as they say out here in the sticks;-)
You always find a way to make Nashville look “good”. 🙂
Some old grinch must have noticed the new reindeer decorations, as they were removed a couple of days later. It was great fun while it lasted, though. One of the Hobnob hostesses pointed it out to anyone she thought would get a snicker out of it.
But don’t you miss palm trees with Christmas lights on them? First time I saw that I was a teen coming from New England and it cracked me up.
The worst climate shock I ever had was a duty station transfer from Virginia Beach to Gitmo in Feb., many years ago during the Cuban missile crisis. In Florida, I lived in Indian River County and could never quite get used to planting the garden in late winter. As for non-traditional Christmas trees, Mrs. ID takes the prize for that with her night blooming Cirrus tree by our front door.
Festive!
Must have been quite frigid; they’re blue.
The color must have seemed appropriate for the snowy environment. The Hobnob Corner gals laughed for days!
That is great!
Gifts (canned bruschetta)
Vinegars from Christmas past
Dipping bread-drenched bruschetta into oil and vingegar — ah, how I love traditional Christmas pleasures. 🙂
That’s a favorite around here.
The backlighting on your vinegar bottles is lovely, and what a yummy gift. 🙂
I love the sky shot, Andi, especially Christmas Eve. I have to get out of town to get away from those pesky power lines.
And I keep thinking I need to spend more time in the corn fields around Columbus so I can avoid those pesky trees. 🙂
Olivia, the snow photo is lovely. It looks like an artist’s drawing.
I shot it out the car window while driving in the storm … 😀
I was a passenger … 😉
Well that’s good to hear;-)
Sometimes those serendipitous shots are just the best!
I was gonna say…
