Welcome back.
This week we’ll be continuing with the painting of the grille of a 1949 Packard automobile. The photo that I’m using is seen in the photo directly below. I’ll be using my usual acrylics on an 8×10 canvas.
Seen in a vintage illustration directly below is the entire vehicle showing the grille in context.
When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.
Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.
I’ve actually tweaked a number of items. The house reflections between the healight and central grille have been faded slightly with a thin wash of white paint. On the central grille itself, I’ve whitened the sky reflection and its included cloud. The sky was just a bit too blue as it was previously. Finally, the Packard badge has additional shadows and highlights along with changes to some of its details.
Receiving attention, at long last, is the upper lefthand corner. It now depicts a simple distant background, a welcome visual respite to the densely painted car body.
This piece has been the most challenging painting that I’ve ever attempted. I am pleased with the result. I feel that I’ve now turned someting of a corner in my work.
The current and final state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.
That’s about it for now. Next week I’ll have a new piece to show you. See you then.
As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.
Earlier paintings in this series can be seen here.
Paint me a picture of your thoughts.
Very nice job, boran2!
Phenomenal!
I feel that I’ve now turned someting of a corner in my work.
l agree wholeheartedly. this is really an outstanding piece. imo, your best work yet.
just for grins l went back and looked at some of your very early pieces, and the change/growth in not only your technical skill, but subject and compositon is really apparent.
thanks for sharing the process with us, not an easy thing to do from my perspective. that, in and of itself speaks volumes about your confidence…so l’ll take your bio: …all around nice person… as gospel.
kudos! keep ’em coming.
Thanks, dada, for your kind comments!
Doing these every week for roughtly 5 years has definitely made a difference. I used to do perhaps 2 or 3 a year at best with little, if any, progress in my skills.
That link is kind of scary. 😉
That should be 2 or 3 paintings a year.
practice may not make it perfect, but there’re definitely demonstrable changes that happen if you do it every day.
l’ve started taking pictures everyday again, as much from boredom…as chimpy’s econ0my has destroyed my practice…as anything.
lot’s of stuff gets culled, but having the FFFlog every week to put them in has added to the incentive.
that said, it’s time to make the pictures.
later
Turned a corner.
I`d say you`re catching up to yourself on an oval track. I`m pleased to hear that this one was the most challenging work. Now that you have it behind you, you should be ready & confident for the next one. Congrats on the completion, & I hope all your weekly visitors may have helped to encourage you on to bigger & better things.
Besides that, It is also a great painting in & of itself.
Thanks Knucklehead! I am looking forward to the next one. It is a bit less dense, but still challenging. It just seems like I’ve been doing this one for months.
You have.
