The International Criminal Court has taken action against the President of Sudan.
On Wednesday, the ICC issued a warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity ā the first time in its history that it has charged a sitting head of state. A charge of genocide was not included, despite ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo’s request and the U.S.’s repeated allegations that al-Bashir is guilty of the crime. ICC spokeswoman Laurence Blairon accused al-Bashir of “intentionally directing attacks against an important part of the civilian population of Darfur, Sudan, murdering, exterminating, raping, torturing and forcibly transferring large numbers of civilians and pillaging their property.”
Want to take any bets on whether al-Bashir or Dick Cheney is first to actually face a trial before the ICC?
Just posted a diary on Darfur, mainly a video about perpetrators who broke silence to talk about their roles in the genocide.
The Bush-Cheney administration knew these atrocities were going on but remain silent. Perhaps one day they too will talk frankly about their own roles in perpetrating this human rights crime.

I’m oui and wrote a comment in his diary. take care (it easy)!
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
I’m not, so here it is:

Dick is sitting pretty…not about to travel outside the U.S.A.. .not wishing to have a Pinochet event.
btw, if memory serves, U.S.A refused to sign up as a member of the ICC pressured many countries to give it an exemption.
Israel is also not a member.
But
we’ll see what comes of the deliberations before the ICC …whether Israel can be tried for war crimes in Gaza. If yes, the same would hold for BushCHeney and cronies.
I am anxious to read the next Sy Hersh missive…a good many informants suggested he call after January 20, 2009.
put in an extra order of popcorn and maple syrup.
Gotta choose the obvious:
It’s all about getting the killing done the ‘acceptable’ way. Cheney may not have done that either, but is at least willing to pretend if we are..
No one has bandied the ‘G’ word around in Cheney’s case, either.. Let alone come ‘this’ close to charging him with it.
Oh, and he’s whitey. Can’t forget that whitey knows best and should be given the chance for history to unfold before judging them too harshly, no? At least not until he is on his deathbed anyhow (do cyborgs get deathbeds?).
Remember Bush will be remembered as the Greatest President of all time in a few years.
They just love being on their own, don’t they?
Funny, they’re not an NPT signatory either, while Iran is. Go figure.
