Not having Al Franken in the Senate just caused a whole lot of wasted time, as Harry Reid fell one vote short of being able to pass last year’s omnibus spending bill. Russ Feingold didn’t support it because he doesn’t like omnibus bills where ‘everything is just thrown in there together’. Evan Bayh didn’t support it because of increased spending. Bob Menendez didn’t support it because it has language that relaxes our relations with Cuba. The end result was that Reid could only muster 59 votes and has to pass another continuing resolution to keep the government from shutting down.
Now, I could make fun of Reid for not being able to count, but it is surprising that Feingold would cause this much extra work just because he doesn’t like how the process played out. This bill took the form of an omnibus because Bush threatened to veto all the individual spending bills last fall. Feingold knows that, so why is he playing games?
It’s annoying because the Senate had to pass the omnibus without any changes so that it matched the House version. Knowing this, the Republicans offered a bunch of stupid amendments that would be uncomfortable to vote against. After the Dems took all those difficult votes, then they fail to pass it anyway. I wish Menendez would relax about our relations with Cuba, and I wish Bayh would stop grandstanding. I wish Feingold had spared us this embarrassment. But it all would have worked out anyway if Norm Coleman would just accept defeat.
At what point can Coleman’s litigation be turned from ‘exhausting all options’ to ‘personally hindering the normal function of the Federal Government at a time of War’?
they’re following the law up there in Minnesota. Rhetoric isn’t going to speed things up.
He’s not compelled to ask for a special election by any law that I know of!
he can ask anyways….the SC should tell him/his team in clear terms that, in light of the way the recent election was run, there were no illegalities in the voting (irregularities, yes, illegalities, not as such), there is no legal standing in requesting a new election.
I don’t really get why the SC is dragging their feet—they should have certified the results and sent Franken off to DC by now. Oh well–some people have a different sense of urgency from the rest of us
is -5.75,-4.05 your facebook political philosophy test coordinates?
don’t recall the test as being in Facebook….heck, I forget even where I took it now.. it rated me moderately Liberal Progressive (basically what teh nums indicate)….. one day I’ll get around to either adjusting ’em or taking ’em out….
Political Compass
Some of their questions are leading or presumptuous, but FWIW I’m -7.62, 0.31
i got a -5.12,-6.62.
Sounds about right.
the minnesota SC just rejected franken’s petition for an election certificate that would put him in the U.S. Senate without waiting for a lawsuit to be resolved.

the RATs are quite comfortable with the stalemate, as todays’ vote clearly shows.
the kabuki continues
Coleman is a republican a-hole. What do you expect? Another piece of evidence of how the rethuglicans really hate the Republic. I sure hope they get what they deserve.
Wasn’t reid’s grandstanding on refusing to seat burris until he was certified the inspiration for the GOP threat to do the same, after which reid agreed not to site franken?
I wouldn’t absolve reid anytime soon.
well, Reid was right and he shouldn’t have seated Burris. Burris lied to his face.
And, Minnesota law says that Franken can’t be seated until the legal challenge is cleared up. They might want to change that law.
is the Chair of the DSCC. I have just called his office, and indicated that my contributions to the DSCC (at least $400 during 2008) will depend on our Cuba policy. If we normalize our Cuba relationships, I will contribute to the DSCC. Otherwise, I will find other contribution paths.
Mr. Menendez needs to wake up and smell the sugar cane.
My guess on Feingold. He is playing Bayh’s game from the left to counteract the impulse to kow-tow to Bayh. And yes, he does have a point but this is a bill that passed last year and faced Bush’s veto.
Do you think that some Republicans voted FOR it last year in hopes of getting re-elected, and now they are “delivering” on the promises.
Feingold’s legislative record is of pointless grandstanding. He’s a joke.
Ever since Feingold bitched about Obama dumping public financing for the general election, while ignoring the fact that his bestest buddy, John McCain, was in violation of the law, I’ve had a lot less respect for him.
People on our side worship him for reasons I don’t fully understand. Same deal with Wellstone. It’s weird. Yes, Feingold’s a liberal senator. But there’s nothing special about him. I’ll take Kennedy over Feingold any day of the week.
He nearly voted to convict Clinton in the impeachment trial.
He’s most comfortable being the lone good guy on the losing side of votes.
And I think that’s what makes the “left” like him: lot’s of purist symbols and no messy governance issues.
Why not call up Reid’s office and ask why he brought it to a vote if it was one vote shy?
he didn’t bring it to a vote.
So it’s better to continue our failed Cuba policy? Menendez clearly had only his own interests in mind and not those of his constituents.
