I long for the day when I won’t feel compelled to check out Professor Juan Cole’s blog, Informed Comment, seven days a week. However, I suspect that day may not come in my lifetime, much less the lifetimes of my children.

what’s Juan talking about today?
Afghanistan
Ah, when will the American Army come home from Afghanistan? Judging from S. Korea, Okinawa, Iraq and Germany to name a few spots, the answer is never. I love the German situation where I think the US troops control a ski place somewhere in Bavaria. On the other hands the military posts are great places to shop (PX) for those soldiers stationed there and their families as well. Great choice of goods and nice discounts. And, of course, there are many fine golf courses for the use of our officers and their guests. Takes some of the boredom out of military life, you know.
If the nation goes broke, however, all bets are off. Then, and only then, the troops may come home. It’s a crazy world, that’s for sure.
Are you kidding? If the nation goes broke that’s when a new war will start somewhere. No one’s going to be bringing a bunch of armed men who have been trained as soldiers home to a country where there aren’t any jobs for them. Or at least no one who is expecting to hold onto the reigns of power at any rate.
