Is this justice?
The trial of Iraqi journalist Muntader al-Zaidi, who shot to fame after flinging his shoes at former President George Bush during a press conference last December in Baghdad, ended with a relatively light three-year sentence.
Fans of al-Zaidi reportedly swarmed the vicinity of the court-house, shouting slogans in his favor and decrying the Iraqi government. Several close family members called the prosecutors “sons of dogs.”
Mike Tyson got six years for rape. Is throwing a shoe at Bush half as serious?
Of course. He injured no one. Rape is VERY serious, and injures people for life.
He deserves an award for courage and honesty, not a jail sentence.
Absolutely!
I’ve always been so sorry he didn’t clock Bush right in the friggin’ head-both times. What a boon for all humanity that would have been! The man’s an actual hero! For the horrific invasion and continued occupation of Iraq-so far he’s the only person in the entire world with the balls to hold George Bush accountable! Bravo!
They’re making an example of him, no doubt.
You forgot the most important line that he yelled “Long Live Iraq.” I thin the guy should be pardoned.
Pardoned for what?! He should be rewarded!
How long did Bob Ney get?
30 months for treason against the United States of America. Sold out the country for a suitcase full of Turkish cash, right? While a guy who had his country illegally invaded and occupied on the orders of a criminal tortures innocents gets 36 months for throwing shoes at said criminal…
Three year for throwing a shoe is a travesty.
Six years for rape is manifestly inadequate.
On the other hand, Palestinian little boys and girls have been known to receive indefinite detention, torture, and summary execution for throwing stones at tanks (see here, for example).
So, maybe three years for throwing a couple of shoes is not so bad after all.
The sentence was obviously more severe because he missed…
Bingo! Looks like you’re onto something here!
Maybe a few months in jail (which he has already served). It was a harmless act of protest. Three years is just ridiculous.
