Another wet day here. I think it’s supposed to finally end tomorrow, though. I hope so, because I’m starting to get a little stir crazy being stuck indoors for this long. I guess I could post a knitting diary or something…
What’s everyone up to today? I know the Fs are recovering from the big birthday feast..somebody here is sleeping in after watching a 13-inning baseball game last night. I, of course, fell asleep by inning 4…
This is the first weekend in MONTHS that both f the boys have been gne since Friday night. I don’t miss the taxi driving experience, but it’s really quiet without them.
The sky began clearing here yesterday, bringing with them our first hard frost this morning. Nicer days should be on their way to you easterlies soon;-)
People trying to make flu vaccination a red/blue issue…and calling anyone who isn’t getting the H1N1 vaccine an idiot, despite the fact that (a) there isn’t enough vaccine to go around anyway, and (b) most people opt not to get a flu shot in any given year. The most notably stupid statement in that thread being that pharma doesn’t make a profit on vaccine sales…argh.
Waxing the car sounds productive. I’m grocery shopping and retrieving CBtE from a land far away…farther than I wanted to drive today, anyway.
I’m sorry I’ve been missing the Flog. I’m not allowed to access my online photo albums & no one else is, either. I emailed the site administrators this weekend; no answer yet; maybe they’ve left the planet.
Extra blustery today – which will make flower photography difficult. Maybe I can find a patch in a lea.
Imogen heard another tree fall this weekend, but we’ve yet to spot where it went down. At some point we’re gonna have to borrow the neighbor’s 30″ chainsaw (and probably the ex-logger neighbor as well to wield the thing). If it’s at all possible, once the largest fallen tree has dried a bit I’d like to bring in someone with a portable mill to cut it into planking. Maybe build a deck with it.
We had a huge storm on August 4th and there are trees down all over the place but due the steep hills, we would need a skidder to get most of them so they’re just going to add to the humus.
“Fortunately” this tree came down on our trail, which is the old logging road. It will still be difficult to move, especially since it must weigh several tons, but someone willing to take their time can probably get it out in pieces.
Yep, we’re just past peak here. As well, windy conditions over the past few days have taken many, many leaves down — so we’re getting that bare November look, a grey fur on the hillsides.
I planned on posting some ‘color shots’ of the mountains here & such, but I’m currently challenged in that department.
It is quite beautiful here today, though. It’s so sunny that I need to go out & pinch myself — then get to the chores.
Those are really wonderful pictures but I’m kind of shocked at how green it is there. All that heat held in by all those buildings really has a big effect.
Good morning!
I see now that some of them are not properly in focus 🙁 – something wrong with the camera??
Yes, it is still surprisingly green.
On the other hand, clean-up is still ongoing:
NEW YORK — From one of the highest points in Central Park, Doug Blonsky can now see something that was never visible before: the Empire State Building and the rest of the Midtown Manhattan skyline.
It’s not a welcome sight. Until two months ago, the spot where Blonsky is standing was in the densest woodland in the park. Thick with American elms, oaks and tulip trees, the Great Hill in the park’s northern section seemed far removed from the hustle of New York City.
Then, in the space of half an hour on the night of Aug. 18, a freak blast of 80-mph wind knocked down more than 500 trees, including some of the park’s oldest and grandest, and battered 1,000 others, causing devastation unknown in the park’s 156-year history.
The windstorm “was brutal,” says Blonsky, the park’s administrator and president of the Central Park Conservancy, the non-profit organization that manages the park under a contract with the city. “It was unbelievable to see what could happen in 20 minutes.”
And all the destruction happened in the upper part of the park – above 90th Street.
Yes, shocking developments down here even, with the temp at 35 when I got up. Back into the 70s for the week though. I do not like wearing socks this early in the fall. 🙁
Buenos días, amigos y amigas. A marathon monday is in store but with extra-strong coffee, I should survive through mid-afternoon when I’ll need to locate something sugary. Hope you all have a good start to your week.
Oh, and the triple-digit weekend is over. Only supposed to be 91 today. Only…
I need some love today. I’m morning the last two Dodger-Phillies games. Saturday was an understandable, if unacceptable tragedy. But yesterday, they were beat fair and square. The Dodgers just couldn’t get it done.
And while it’s easy to blame the pitchers, where were the bats?
Sigh. I feel like the pre-Obama days, where the guys I want never won….
Ugh, late today. Got stuck on the mountain sitting in traffic for a hour because of a crashed pickup. Several drivers including myself ran to pee in the woods after our morning coffee. Never a dull moment.

There is a whole lot o stupid on the political interwebs this morning. Back to cooking blogs… 🙂
Do tell. Good morning CG! Rainy here too. I’m still going to attemtpt to put some wax on my car.

Good to hear there might be an end to the wet soon!

Folks, please allow me to pimp this diary about something that’s seriously bothering me.
I’m concerned for my pondmates in New York and Pennsylvania. Especially their little ones or the little-ones-to-be.
Read and rec’ed. I hope the issue gets wide attention and support.
Thanks, Andi. Much appreciated.

It’s hard to believe that the state will allow the water supply of so many millions of people to be fucked with.
Message of the morning moon: instead of rise and shine, just go back to bed and reflect.

Sounds like a plan…too bad I have to get up now (I’ve been awake since four).
You poor thing. I hope you woke everybody else up so they could feel sorry for you. 😉
I woke somebody up to get him to roll over and stop snoring. 🙂 And now it’s time to wake CBtY up.
At least I got a lot of sleep this weekend. Too bad I have to work today.
Yep, work is a complete bummer … except for that money thing.
It’s nearly bedtime here. I hope you all manage to survive your Mondays as well as we did.
Oh, and my Nikon arrived today! Woohoo.
There will be orchid photos tomorrow.
Oh boy! Camera back and orchids to come. That makes Monday totally worth it.
Extra blustery today – which will make flower photography difficult. Maybe I can find a patch in a lea.

Well I guess I can wait a day or two.

C-c-cold! I had to scrape ice off the car today. What’s that about?
Morning!
Not quite s bad in the city – still, a chilly 38 when we got up.
Ho! I think we’ve finally cracked 40 up here (100 miles from NYC). The sun’s out, too. It’s been weeks!
Hi ww!
It must be a stunningly beautiful day today upstate (albeit chilly). Are the colors past peak yet?
Good to hear from you again!

I’ll bet it’s nice in the city today, too. Enjoy!
We’re not doing our usual trips to the Berkshires this year, since curly’s mother’s apartment has been rented out.
But there is beauty in the city as well; these are from a trip in the park (CP) this afternoon:
Those are really wonderful pictures but I’m kind of shocked at how green it is there. All that heat held in by all those buildings really has a big effect.
Good morning!

That’s really sad. It’s hard to see grand old trees go down. Living in the woods I get to see all the time, of course, but it still hurts.
Yikes!
Ooh, pretty. Makes me want to go there. 🙂
How is the adjustment going for curly’s mom?
Well – then you have to come (while there is still time).
She is taking it surprisingly well, but keeps asking where she is and may be catching on to the fact that this is the end-station.
I wish you all the very best luck in this adjustment, ask.
Thank you for the pretty pictures! So green it looks like a dream.

That definitely sounds more habitable, Man E.
Don’t forget: 90 is the new 80.
Here in the high Northeast (about 200 ft), we just may see 45 today! Where’s my thong?
I’m sitting at about 2000 ft above sea level, not 200.
Post a photo when you find your thong. 😉
Be careful of what you ask for, b2. It might affect your lunch.
In any case, I haven’t done coke in years.
😉
Well, that’s good, the diet stuff is really a killer! 😉
I am definitely not jealous of those temps but I might just a tad of your ability to go to all those gorgeous mountains to escape the heat.
I should’ve known better – three days later and the high will be 79

Well as a life-long cubs fan, I’m trying to work up some sympathy. But so far, it just isn’t happening. 😉
That’s a common response from Cubs fans. I understand!
Ugh, late today. Got stuck on the mountain sitting in traffic for a hour because of a crashed pickup. Several drivers including myself ran to pee in the woods after our morning coffee. Never a dull moment.
Quite the bummer, b2 — but it could’ve been worse, obviously.
Yeah, you could be me ~ the one who can’t pee outdoors without getting my shoes wet.
Problem solved, just take them off.

That’s pretty. I guess your morning walk is pre-sunrise these days?
Looks like a great one here today, sunny and 68 in the forecast.
I adjust the start time of my walk so that I’m starting it about 15 minutes before sunrise. It was in the 60s here too.
Off to Bruny Island. Back Sunday with pictures (and penguin breath).
Neato…have fun!
Hope you have a great time and give the Nikon a damn good workout, too.
So there’ll be a whole separate photo diary upon return, no 🙂
