Hello again painting fans.
This week I’ll be starting a new painting. This one, like the last, is a structure in Cape May, New Jersey. I will be using the photo seen directly below.
I took this photo this past May. This structure probably started life as a residence but has since found other purposes. It has suffered some unfortunate “renovations” but is largely intact. Anyway, the form and shadows appealed to me.
I’ll be using my usual acrylics on a 5 by 5 inch canvas. (Yes, it’s a small one.)
As usual, the placement on the canvas of the first few lines sets the path for all the comes after. I’ve begun by painting the outline of the structure. Around the building, I’ve left only a small amount of space. This worked well in the prior piece. I’ve also painted in some of the details for purposes of illustration.
The current state of the painting is seen directly below.
That’s about it for now. Next week I’ll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.
Earlier paintings in this series can be seen here.
Paint me a picture of your thoughts.

This looks interesting.
5X5 is really tiny, adding to the degree of difficulty, I imagine.
It would be nice to see a pictorial evolution of the house.
Thanks Head. I imagine that the one story piece to the right was added later on. I’m not sure about the tower, as such things were in vogue at the time it was built.
I’m actually enjoying these small canvases.
Hello Boran,
I agree with Knucklehead I like the subject. Do you know the age of the house? I look forward to following your progress.
Thanks Salunga! The house was built circa 1880.
Looking at the house again, I notice that there is another roof line.
There really is no reason for that roof line to be there, so I`m speculating that it was the peak of another line at the top of the house identical to the existing peak, making the house have two face peaks.
It would have later been enlarged to the “tower space”.
But the “roof” seen between the front-facing gable and the tower is actually white siding. I believe this area is an access point to the tower and not part of a side-facing gable. I’ll have to look further when we go back in May to make sure.
Or it was modeled after gramdma`s house at the millpond.
Good point Boran2.
The evolution of certain homes are very interesting.
If you are to revisit the area, maybe you can show the present occupants your painting, & get details of it`s past.
Pretty cool!
