There has been a terrible disaster in Haiti. A 7.0 earthquake with an epicenter only ten miles from the capital of Port-au-Prince has leveled the main hospital and destroyed much of the city, including the presidential palace. Now would be a good time to do a google search of Unicef or the Red Cross and open your wallet. Haiti is already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and this is going to make the situation much worse. A lot of people are dead and everyone else is suffering.

Doctors Without Borders is already there in Haiti. Their medical facilities n Port-au-Prince, like most buildings, were damaged.
I’m sure they would appreciate whatever you can send their way.
While lesser known, Engineers Without Borders is also worthy of sending a few bucks. They basically do what the doctors do for the people, but for the infrastructure.
just wanted to echo your suggestion for MSF/Doctors Without Borders.
I just sent them something, thanks.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Is it bad that I don’t trust the red cross with my money? Nevertheless, there are other organizations and they will need help there, BIG TIME.
Nope, I don’t trust them either.
I trust USAID even less. What a nightmare.
Why can’t the invisible hand of the free market fix the problem?
Yes that is snark. Please give if you can.
And I’m working on an article re Haiti. Their history is positively tragic, and America has done her share of contributing to the poverty there. So it’s only appropriate we help now, in whatever way we can.
So, so sad. How can they even rebuild?
how to? Same ways the Germans and Japanese and others did after WWII… clean up, salvage what you can, and start putting Humpty-Dumpty back together.
Of course, all help that is offered will probably be gratefully accepted
The best organization in Haiti to give to is Partners in Health (www.pih.org). They have been there for years. PIH was founded by the amazing Paul Farmer who is the subject of the award winning book by Tracy Kidder “Mountains Upon Mountains”. They have clinics all over the country.
Dallasdoc over at DK has an excellent diary up with many updates about the situation on the ground and organizations to donate to.
