Welcome to Friday Foto Flogging, a place to share your photos and photography news. We were inspired by the folks at European Tribune who post a regular Friday Photoblog series to try the same on this side of the virtual Atlantic. We also thought foto folks would enjoy seeing some other websites so each week we’ll introduce a different photo website.
This Week’s Theme: Building(s). Verb or noun.
Website(s) of the Week: A day in the life of New York City, in minature (video) by Sam O’Hare.

Cira Center, again
“Building” my skills in black & white portraits :/
Nifty processing on that middle photo.
Your portrait skills look pretty good to me. Of course, having a great muse must help. 🙂
I don’t typically do portraits, though. I blogged that shot and this is what I had to say about it:
As Elliott has gotten older, he’s gone through a variety of phases with regards to having his picture taken. He takes great school photos but whenever I try to take a shot of him, he usually makes a silly face or a fake kind of super-smile.
In this instance, and what he’s been doing more of lately, is making a slightly silly face with a more natural smile. Throw in a little Photoshop softness and desaturate and voila!
I think he’s mimicking me, actually. When he does someone that approaches the limit of acceptable behavior or if he’s just not listening, I throw him a fatherly ‘watch out, buddy…you’re approaching the line’ kind of look. Friendly, but definitely a ‘watch out, pal’ kind of look and I think he’s making cute with it.
The black and white is wonderful for contrast.
Great reflection in the building. I like that.
test test
I was having an error earlier when posting that I’m trying to recreate. If anyone gets an error message when previewing/posting, please try to copy the text of the error and send it to admin.
Might’ve been on my end but it seemed more likely to be server side.
if it’s what l think it is, a warning that you’ve maybe already posted, that will pop up sometimes if you preview more than once.
but it could be server related too. the site’s been loading extremely slowly for me today.
mystery to me.
I tried posting a comment to the cafe early this morning and everything froze. Finally gave up and went to work.
I had that happen to me right after I posted the diary Friday morning – I couldn’t get the site to open so I gave up too.
This is a screenshot of what I saw when trying to open BT:
St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa

Capitol Building, Washington D.C.

St. Mary’s Basillica, Minneapolis
Colorado House, Old Town, San Diego
Here’s to another great week.
Whoops, can someone fix?
Thank you.
All great pictures but the capitol shot is my favorite.
Thanks, It was taken shortly after 9/11 when construction was beginning on barriers all over the place.
St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa Were you there to see the Lightning play?
St. Mary’s Basillica is an impressive building. Love the glowing capital dome.
Thanks, Yeah, we go to games regularly. I’m a hockey nut.

Fantastic set! I especially like the way you shot the first Mannheim, Germany photo and Ludwigshafen, Germany. Great perspective and just perfect use of the light (artifical and natural).
thanks! the first Mannheim pic is a department store which was built by Richard Meier, the same architect who built the Getty Museum in LA.
The Getty Museum in Los Angeles is really cool, I live in New York City and I think there are some Meier buildings around the city, to learn more about Meier in New York please visit:
http://www.nycrentals.com
He also designed this school in the school system where my husband teaches. The city is, in fact, a microcosm of modern architecture.
I must agree with Andi. A very interesting and wonderful set, Sven! It makes me want to go traveling over to Europe again.
Amazing set of images.
Is there a gang of outlaws behind the “Hole in the Wall”?
well, kind of. it’s a new shopping mall…
Amazing shots, keep them coming!
Sven, these are fantastic!
Love the Frankfurt, Germany spider-web building – that is really something.
My favorites are the spider web window through the building in Frankfurt and the very simple building in Liechtenstein. Great set.
thanks. I like the Liechtenstein building, too. It’s actually the newly built parliament of that tiny country.
highland school, c.1891, a pretty tasty pile of bricks and stone. repurposed as professional offices in the early 80’s and on the national register of historic properties:
the gatekeeper says hiya
clik images to enlarge
That’s a great building but the gatekeeper is creepy as hell.
I’d love one of those for the county offices.
That looks like it would make a good Hogwarts II. Probably an intimidating place to a little kid after dark. Nice one.
What a gorgeous looking building – full of character. And the gatekeeper is fantastic. Love those d.
Nice building.
No wonder it`s on the historical registry.
Cool mascot too.
Are you sure the gatekeeper at that school wasn’t saying, “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here”? 🙂
Forgive me for posting this again but I just had to take advantage of this topic,
It’s a classic — so always worth posting.
I love it!
lol, a classic for sure. 🙂
Some primitives
The County Jail

Community Center

The Mayor’s Manse

Stating the Obvious

Blacksmith’s Forge

County Health Clinic

And for those that could use a touch of green about this time of year…

Wonderful old buildings. Obviously, no expense was spared. 😉
Absolutely not!
Oh boy, redbuds and dogwoods — bring ’em om!
And another great tour of Brown County. The tourist board really needs to hire you.
I really dislike some of the things that have been added to the buildings, like the stairway visible inside the “dogtrot” of the community building and the huge security light fastened to the rear of the same big cabin. The junk just destroys the authenticity of the original and makes it damn near impossible to photograph. The original stairways were inside the cabins on each end, IIRC.
I guess it may not make a difference to most of the tourists, though. Maybe if I’m voted onto the council again, I can threaten to defund something to force the historical society to cooperate with my ideas;-)
Those colours around Brummett Cabin are so pretty ID.
Wow Indianadem,
What a nice selection of buildings, apart from the fact that they are amazing.
Easy to get, too, since they are all within sight of the building I work in except for the last one.
Building a Family
Building a Web.
This spider builds up four radii to make itself more impressive, though, to me, it`s impressive enough by itself.
Building a Fossil
I took a few years to allow this bobcat to decompose naturally behind the shed.
I then poured dirt, gravel & concrete over it & sprayed off excess with a hose .
I had it hanging on the railing for a few years.
When I moved, I set it against a tree stump till I could hang it somewhere, but before that happened, the neighbor`s dog ate it.
Building an Insurance Claim
A car flipped on the highway, taking out a hydrant & came to rest on a utility pole.
Building a Postcard
The World Famous Malibu Pier at sunset with a bank of fog beyond, fingering it`s way up into the hills.
Building Knowledge
I convinced my little friend Nicky, that Santa Monica Mountain King snakes were friendly.
Building Confidence
Although Nicky was confident that this local Black Tarantula was harmless, he preferred I hold it.
Rebuilding our Heritage
A huge Tipi (about 20′ tall) down the canyon from my yard.
Building an Eyebrow
First find a sunset.
Make sure to locate one with a contrail in the sky.
Have a lagoon close by that is emptying on the outgoing tide.
Building a Collage
Proceed to a favorite spot.
Take many pictures.
Enlarge one for a background.
Paste all your images onto it.
Post it on a blog.
Building a Pad
Take an image from your collage that will make the viewer smile & post it also.
Building a Path
First take a picture of a cloud formation that unusually looks like a foot print.
Now that you know what it looks like, fid a formation with two feet, & proceed.
You know the rest.
Building Beauty
Plant a Rose bush, & wait.
Building a Hive
First find some swarming bees. (approx. 20,000)
Stick your head into the outdoor cupboard they`re in.
Take some pix of the buzzing mass.
Run like hell.
Building a Chariot (for Blen Hur)
Take a shot of a Red Spotted Blenny
Take another shot of a large Apple Snail shell
Open PhotoShop.
Put them together.
You`re off to the races.
Building Clouds
First build a pond.
Put water in it & photograph the reflection of the sky.
Do it on a cloudy day.
You`ve done it again.
Building a Fantasy
Use your imagination.
Building a Future
Be nice to animals.
Building Symbiosis
I don`t know how, but it looks like this.
Wow, you’ve really built a great exploration of this week’s theme.
And eyebrow clouds, double rainbows and Nicky’s face as he watches that snake were even better than a blenny.
Well AndiF,
There are not many “buildings” around here.
They`re mostly homes, so I had to use the theme as best I could.
Hey, that`s what I do.
Find the loophole & expand it.
Hah.
Fantastic set, KNUCKLEHEAD!
Thanks Indianadem.
The “Building a fossil” shot reminded me of the old “The dog ate my homework” excuse. Too bad. It reminds me also of some of the environmental sculpture my brother has been doing for his own amusement for many years.
Yeah, The dog that ate the fossil, was a 40 thousand dollar dog.
It ate two mink coats, about 35 pairs of expensive shoes, two beautiful sofas, & an untold number of cell phones, TV remotes, & countless chair & table legs. Then he died.
Whew.
Man, that’s gotta be some kinda record!
You`d hope.
Ahhhh, these made my day. 🙂
Breath in Olivia.
That’s a great collection of photos!
Thanks Boran2
Poisonous vs. Non-poisonous
#1
Red on black –
friend of Jack.
Red on yellow –
deadly fellow.
#2
Round pupils – you’re safe.
Vertical pupils – look out.
#3
Anal vent – there is some difference, but if you’re looking at the anal vent you’re way too close.
Great set. Love the collage.
