It’s cold, so the puppies wanted in. Now that they’ve warmed up they’ve decided that it’s time to wrestle.
Why does it always seem to get cold when Imogen’s out of town and I have to sleep alone? It’s no fair at all, even if I am the one who keeps us both warm.
I can’t imagine trying to sleep with a dog in the bed. First, they’d take up all the room. Second, they get up several times each night. And third, after just one exception they’d be trying to get in bed with me every night for the rest of their doggy lives. Hector is awake half-the-night, which is why he has his own room. Alpacas smell like livestock.
I’ve had Stay-Put-Pyrs, but you have to train them early and with Imogen’s critter allergies there was never a chance they were going to be allowed in the bedroom, much less the bed.
When Andi was traveling a lot for work, she would invariably be OOT during the snow storm that took me 2 days to cut through downed trees to get out to the road, when the dog decided to develop some strange malady, or stuck in Portland, OR on 9/11.
Stuck in Portland on 9/11, yikes! At least Portland had lots of good micro-brewed beers and Powell’s books to keep her occupied.
If I’d have know you at the time I could have told her to get on the Amtrak and head south to the Redding, CA station for a short vacation at my off-grid hideaway just south of Lake Shasta.
I love Powell’s and it really was a sanity-saver that trip — being in a place that was literally packed with human creativity was immensely comforting.
But the microbreweries — there wasn’t a one of them that I tried (I spent a lot of time in Portland in the early 2000s) that had a good dark beer.
Good morning ladies!
What a weekend we had in Geneva! Picture perfect – low 70s, blue skies. Lots of happy faces in the streets after a (mostly) chilly spring.
boran2 was right, Cabin – go to bed Now.
Nobody wants you to torture yourself, and believe me – it’s not that great to have a martyr for a mom. Believe it or not I was always a bozo.
Time to take care of yourself, change your name to CabinEmpress and accept some pampering.
OTOH, they did live through CG’s entire pregnancy so they’ve probably got a clue that it isn’t that easy. OTOH OTOH, now they know just what she’s willing to go through to get that non-ATB replacement for them.
Last time Imogen and I left the country (a trip to NZ), we had to go through Australian immigration separately when we returned. Next time I get to go through the Australian Citizen’s gate with her. Woohoo.
I’ve had an extremely busy and tiring week at work and also a have a touch of what CabinGirl has, I think. I feel a bit better tonight and have to be ok for the #1 grandson’s jr. high graduation speech tomorrow night.
It makes me so angry to think of all that hate aimed at you. I’m joining you in that drink and raising my glass (it’s early so it’s orange juice) to toast you and all the good work you do.
Hoisting a Dr. Perrer here at work in lieu of anything better. The phrase “Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…” keeps running through my head.
Hope everyone’s weather has been nice. We were supposed to get thunder showers last night, but the storms were either East or West of us and we didn’t get anything. They’re predicting showers after 8:00 am, but the radar just doesn’t look like it.
Both George and I are doing fine. I got my staples out earlier in the week. Now if I could just get this damned itching to stop I’d be OK.
We had a household emergency where the hot water line to the washer burst and flooded the utility room and part of the den. We’re still working on getting that fixed and hopefully that will be done today. That’s the second flood we’ve had in under a month. 🙁
Other than that everything seems to be running rather smoothly. Yeah sure smoothly. 😉
Glad to hear the staples are out, and at least the itching is a sign that you’re healing. Is george making sure everyone takes care of you?
Plumbing problems are the worst household mess to fix, imo. I hope they finish up on schedule and that you’re done with that for a while.
We’re supposed to have 80 degree/sunny weather all weekend. I was going to make my annual trek to the sheep and wool festival with my mom and Finn today, but I’ve been sick all week and Finn has caught a touch of it now too, so I think we’ll be staying home this year. I’m a wee bit bummed, but I think a restful weekend will be better for everyone involved.
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well, and I’m sorry to hear Finn might be catching a touch of it. I would say a most wise decision to stay away from the festival. I think that’s what you need the most is a restful weekend. Plus you should have Boo and the boys waiting on you.
Is george making sure everyone takes care of you? George is to busy barking at Lucy (the puppy) and my brother and sil to even notice anyone taking care of me. 😉
Yep I agree that I hate plumbing problems probably worse than any household repair. I’m hoping they come in early and finish up right away. Otherwise it’s a third day of cold showers. 🙁
As far as the rain goes, I was actually hoping we get some. There’s still some yellow pine pollen around and I’d like to get that all washed away.
Now then you need to just settle back and let everybody take care of you and Finn.
The best non-steroidal anti-itch substance I’ve found is French green clay. It’s exactly what it sounds like: green clay, from France. Available in a dry powdered form. It’s found in face masks, if you can’t find it in it’s pure form.
Yeah, it has been awhile. We’re doing pretty good. I’ve been fairly flat out redoing our bathroom: new tub, new vanity, composting toilet; upgrading the floor with concrete underlay, waterproof membrane and tiles; finishing the drywall sheathing on the old Hardy board walls (which contain asbestos). Oh, and all new plumbing – inside the walls this time, instead of running along the surface. I give it about two more weeks before I have it completely finished.
Yesterday Imogen was giving a presentation on grant writing for some members of Hobart refugee community, so Luna, Lily and I went for a “pee” tour though the parks of Hobart. The dogs got mugged every 50 paces or so by small children and curious adults, which makes for a slow walk – not that the dogs minded.
Oh, here’s a place that carries French green clay.
I was reading through what you’re doing with your bathroom and I understood everything until you got to the floor with concrete underlay. Suddenly my mind went blank, and I didn’t understand a single word after that. Once you get into that home improvement type talk, then I’m lost.
I wish I could take George out for a tour through a park. But with George he would be barking and growling at anyone and everyone he saw.
I checked out the site for the clay and it seems a pretty good place. However, I can’t see paying almost $11.00 for a pound of dirt or clay. I can just go in the back yard and dig up some. 😉
Our bathroom floor is old tongue and grove wooden slats, probably 60 years old now. Unfortunately it has gotten we a lot and many boards are somewhat rotted. Concrete underlay comes in sheets – usually around 4 x 8 feet, and for flooring purposes about 6mm thick (approx 1/4″). By putting it on top of the wooden floor I can use screws to tie together all the good and not-so-good boards into one relatively sound structural whole. Also the underlay provides a flat and ridged surface for the tiles (which, unlike wooden floors, doesn’t flex and warp). After that’s down, you need to put a waterproofing layer on the whole floor and few inches up the walls. This is essentially a really thick and tough polythene “paint”, which is applied with a roller. Three coats makes a 1mm thick membrane. The tiles will go on top in the usual fashion.
See, not so hard once you grasp the lingo. The whole point is to make sure that any water that gets on the floor can’t penetrate the structural elements of the house (anymore). I’m sure you can appreciate the importance of that.
Hi CabinGirl! My chest crud is almost gone, so maybe your illness is on the way out too. I came down with it last Tues. We just had a weather front with some rain pass through, but it looks like its mostly gone off to the east. There are flash flood warnings out and T-storms predicted for the entire weekend – again:( Andi & Jim will have that good old “wet dog” odor about the house for awhile. Gives a rustic country home that special atmosphere, doesn’t it?
I actually feel pretty good this morning for the first time since last Mon. Mrs. ID was planning her annual front yard parade watching extravaganza for this morning, so the rain issue is critical. Maybe we’ll get a break for a couple of hours so the neighbors can at least drop by and consume the baked goods and coffee.

You didn’t hear all the noisy ones during the night. I woke up three times during the night (though one of those was because a sopping wet dog wanted in).
I’m normally a very sound sleeper and apparently that held true for most of the night. I’d guessed that wet dog syndrome had struck your household – see above. Heard last night that # 1 grandson will be attending International School on National Road next fall. I’ll have to find out more when the atmosphere isn’t so chaotic as it was after graduation from Stewart last night.
I ran into an old friend after the parade who is a school guidance councilor. She knew quite a lot about the school and said a lot of good things about it. They have an informative web site as well. Sorry- the old one was getting a bit full.
So, I think I have what CBtY had last week. Just in time for this new business oitch on Monday afternoon. Lucky me!
What a yucky way to start the week. 🙁
At least I won’t have to worry about the week getting any worse as it goes on. 🙂
Um, are you sure you really want to say that?
Just working on mind over Mondays.

Have I mentioned lately that I hate old plumbing?
If you haven’t, I’m sure it bears repeating … every time you have to mess with it.
In our house, working on plumbing = lots of screaning.
But, but … Luna! Lilly/Lily! Hector! Alpacas! (okay that last one might not workable)
You just need a different breed of dog — next time look for a Stay Put instead of a Pyr. 🙂
I’ve had Stay-Put-Pyrs, but you have to train them early and with Imogen’s critter allergies there was never a chance they were going to be allowed in the bedroom, much less the bed.
Ah well, then I guess the best solution for Imogen-less cold weather is a nice toasty-warm quilt.
Yep, that’s pretty much the plan. One down quilt to the rescue.
When Andi was traveling a lot for work, she would invariably be OOT during the snow storm that took me 2 days to cut through downed trees to get out to the road, when the dog decided to develop some strange malady, or stuck in Portland, OR on 9/11.
OK, you win.

But the microbreweries — there wasn’t a one of them that I tried (I spent a lot of time in Portland in the early 2000s) that had a good dark beer.
True, Portanders like their extra-hoppy ambers ales. And the stouts were porters at best.
Me too. Unfortunately, it’s what the house came with….
It’s a common condition.
Good morning ladies!
What a weekend we had in Geneva! Picture perfect – low 70s, blue skies. Lots of happy faces in the streets after a (mostly) chilly spring.
We’ve got a rainy Monday here. 🙁
Sounds lovely. Imagining it almost makes up for our day-after-day of rain and gloom.
I feel like death warmed over. I wish I could sleep.
Sorry to hear that, CG – get well soon!
Another beautiful day here, too bad I have to go to the office and be cooped up all day.
Bummer, CG. I hope you feel better soon.
Take the rest of the day off. Tell your boss that I said it’s okay.
I hope that you get some sleep.
Ugh, sorry, CG.
I’m back from an extended meeting with the client, and have been told to go home and rest. Unfortunately, I still have some work to do this afternoon.
The weather here has improved dramatically, though. 🙂
I’m changing the CBs names…they’re now the ATBs: arrogant teenage bozos.
ugh.
boran2 was right, Cabin – go to bed Now.
Nobody wants you to torture yourself, and believe me – it’s not that great to have a martyr for a mom. Believe it or not I was always a bozo.
Time to take care of yourself, change your name to CabinEmpress and accept some pampering.
Done. Fortunately, it was a passing case of ATB syndrome. 🙂
If it’s really just passing, you are truly fortunate.
Or maybe things just look lots better when it’s just you and Finn. 🙂
Oh, I’m sure it will be back again, but at least it has subsided for now. They both gave up and mowed the lawn.
You’d think the new baby in the house would illustrate to them how easily they can be replaced by a younger, cuter model. 🙂
OTOH, they did live through CG’s entire pregnancy so they’ve probably got a clue that it isn’t that easy. OTOH OTOH, now they know just what she’s willing to go through to get that non-ATB replacement for them.
Heh. They have no clue about how much work it is to be pregnant….although they have noticed that babies are a lot work, no matter how cute they are.

Another beautiful, summer like day here.
Good thing I got to the office early = leave early today.
Destination: Lakeside cafe with I good book.
..ahem..
…with a good book.
40s here in NY! Brrrrrr.
My sympathies (+ I’ll be back in NY tomorrow for a long weekend…).
Read about the upstate & NE snowstorm.
Good morning, all!
Bus to the airport in 20 minutes. Back to NY for a long weekend; seeing curly and young asklet after 7 weeks will be good.
Hope your trip is smooth. I’m sure your visit will be wonderful.
I hope you all have a wonderful visit! The weather is supposed to be great this weekend.
Safe journey-
Have a good flight, ask!
Thanks everyone!
Smooth sailing all the way and only 30 minutes from disembarking until in a cab – immigration and customs included. Almost a record.
Wow! That’s great!
Good for you.
Last time Imogen and I left the country (a trip to NZ), we had to go through Australian immigration separately when we returned. Next time I get to go through the Australian Citizen’s gate with her. Woohoo.
Congrats!

Congratulations!
I need a drink. VDare.com linked to my blog from their frontpage.
I need one too. It’s been a long week…
Hola, amigo!
Cheers – I need a shower after looking up that site. Understand well why you didn’t link…
Off – jet-lag.
It makes me so angry to think of all that hate aimed at you. I’m joining you in that drink and raising my glass (it’s early so it’s orange juice) to toast you and all the good work you do.
Ugh. The Anglosphere?!!
Hoisting a Dr. Perrer here at work in lieu of anything better. The phrase “Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…” keeps running through my head.
Hiya Manny,
I’ll have seven drinks to try and wash out some of the bad taste from that site.
Don’t let em get ya down because you’re doing a great job.
Take care
FM
Good job, Manny, looks like you struck a nerve. Maybe you’ll hit a major organ next time.
This week’s theme is Quick Shots: photos taken in a hurry. Olivia will post the diary a little later this morning.
Link: here.
Morning.
My, you’re up early.
I’ve been awake since 4:30 for some reason. Ugh.
And now you’re ready for your nap?
Heh.
I’ve got that beat. Been up since 2 something with a little intervening snoozing. But not much. Must be the spring weather.
Hi b2. 2 … eek.
The benefits to mother of breastfeeding.
Good morning everyone.
Hope everyone’s weather has been nice. We were supposed to get thunder showers last night, but the storms were either East or West of us and we didn’t get anything. They’re predicting showers after 8:00 am, but the radar just doesn’t look like it.

Hiya CG,
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well, and I’m sorry to hear Finn might be catching a touch of it. I would say a most wise decision to stay away from the festival. I think that’s what you need the most is a restful weekend. Plus you should have Boo and the boys waiting on you.

Also, witch hazel.
Hi Keres, it’s nice to see ya.
I think for some reason that in this part of the country I’d have an easier time finding witch hazel than French green clay. 😉
So how have you been doing? It seems like forever since the last time I talked to you.
Yeah, it has been awhile. We’re doing pretty good. I can understand the reluctance to pay for dirt.
Our bathroom floor is old tongue and grove wooden slats, probably 60 years old now. Unfortunately it has gotten we a lot and many boards are somewhat rotted. Oh, it’s good to hear his crud may actually go away sometime. I feel like I’ve had it forever.
Sorry about your rain storms, we’re having a glorious morning here. Poor Andi and Jim and the damp dog smell…
Good morning Family Man!
Glad to hear the healing is progressing. A giant thunderclap woke me at 6:30 and I was so hoping to sleep in to 7:30 after our marathon grandchild elementary school graduation and musical revue last night. We left right after work to get there in time to get seats up front and didn’t get home until after 10, at which time I had a serious attack of the munchies. No time to grab a bite on the way there.
Congrats to your grandson. Jim says the curriculum there is very rigorous.
I ran into an old friend after the parade who is a school guidance councilor. She knew quite a lot about the school and said a lot of good things about it. They have an informative web site as well. The kid should do well there, since he seems to revel in being a top achiever, at least at this point. We’ll see how it goes as he grows and his priorities rearrange.
I don’t take the Columbus paper and am curious as to how badly the the budget woes hit Bartholomew County. I know Jim is secure because of his long years of service, but are they talking about any teacher layoffs? We have a young friend who has been teaching with the Monroe County School Corp. for a couple of years and he got his notice the other day. Its a real shame for him, his family and his kids at school. He spent several years teaching up at IPS until it got to be too much emotionally. Our niece is teaching in Indy, but she got lucky and got into a new charter school. She loves it there. The woman is the most attractive kid magnet I’ve ever seen. Kids latch on to her like there’s some invisible gravitational pull involved.
There weren’t any layoffs this year but Jim thinks they’ll have to next year.
Brown didn’t layoff either. Don’t know how they’re doing it. I guess it could get worse here next year as well.
I guess they’re all hoping for enough retirements. Lots of babyboomers meet the requirements. If it weren’t for the cost of the health insurance, Jim would be glad to retire right now (as in this second).
I can relate to the health insurance cost. I’m actually delighted to be working for someone else because of the outrageous premium increase I was about to get hit with this year.
In our district, they’re going with not replacing the retiring teachers, but don’t think it will be enough. there’s also talk of charging fees for afterschool sports and activities. They’ve already done away with the kindergarten mid-day bus service. And this is a school district that was able to refurbish three elementary schools without raising taxes just a few years ago.
Thanks, Wall Street Liars.
If HCR had included a public option, I think there would have been a lot more teachers retiring.
Good morning ID!
It sounds like you had a good time last night. I used to love to go to my daughter’s plays and graduations when they were in grammar school. I just wish back then I had my digital camera and video recorder.
Hope you have a nice weekend coming up.
Sounds like you had a fun time last night. I’m looking forward to doing all the school musicals and stuff all over again. 🙂
Morning for the third time, FM. I love following you around on the internet — helps my cyberstalking cred. 🙂
Morning again Andi,
Hey you can cyberstalk me anytime. 😛
Well George is whining really loud to go outside, so I’d best heed his signal, or I might be cleaning up something that I really don’t want to.
To everyone that I missed this morning I hope ya’ll have a good day ahead.
Take care
FM
Don’t you look happy — are you all recovered or was this before the creeping crud hit you?
And look at all that lovely green.
It’s actually from this morning. We’re just happy it’s Saturday. 🙂
Looks like a happy mom and contented baby to me. Got the new kid blogging already, eh?
Gotta start them young.
Heh, he was blogging in utero. 🙂
Don’t hurry, don’t worry and take time to smell the flowers.
