One of the stranger things to do is listen to Republicans talk among themselves as they do at The Corner or at American Enterprise Institute seminars. Let me ask you something. If it were not for social issues like legal abortion, gay rights, school prayer, and the church/state balance, where would Republicans get their votes? They can’t call a truce on social issues because social issues are what they use to motivate middle class people to vote for Wall Street’s interests. It’s as simple as that. Freedom means never regulating what powerful businessmen do.

About what I expected, around 45 votes.
Do you have the vote breakdown?
Not yet, but Blanche Lincoln obviously voted with her, as she was a co-sponsor.

Conservative “intellectuals” really take these questions of “principle” seriously, don’t they? I remember when Jack Kemp went out on the campaign trail with his genuinely non-racist conservative message and got crushed without ever understanding what had hit him. Right-wingers come in two flavors: cynical manipulators and dupes.
