I want to praise David Frum for his new role as the conscience of the right. I agree with him completely on everything he has to say to his brethren in the conservative media, with the exception of this part.
When Dan Rather succumbed to the forged Bush war record hoax in 2004, CBS forced him into retirement. Breitbart is the conservative Dan Rather, but there will be no discredit, no resignation for him.
Assuming those documents were indeed forged, Andrew Breitbart is still not the conservative Dan Rather. In this analogy, it’s Tom Vilsack who is Dan Rather. Breitbart is the forger.
Frum has to be the very last conservative left with a conscience, but of course conservatives aren’t calling him a conservative anymore I suspect.
Then why doesn’t he show it more. Did you see him last week at Sully’s place? He was reveling in the RWNJ’s AIPAC’ish smear of Joe Sestak.
I think of that shameless worm as the Linda Tripp of these times. Dan Rather is so far out of his league, the comparison is ridiculous.
Now I get the despair, it seems we just keep getting lower. Unfortunately, there’s still lots more ugliness and suffering in our path.
But the tide does turn. It’s a decent column.
Glad to see this:
The MSM says they are forged because they are typed on an IBM Selectric which didn’t exist at the time. But I remember that the OIC’s Secretary at the Naval Facility that I worked at from 1967 to 1973 had one. They were rare at first and mainly used to type OCR telegrams. In 1973, I went to work in DC and they were common. If a four stripe Captain’s secretary had one, I don’t find it unlikely that a National Guard General had one.
Sorry, but there’s so much more to it than that. While some typewriters in use at the time could (with the right parts) type proportional fonts, the purported documents also featured kerned letter pairs, something no typewriter can duplicate.
Kerning is changing the spacing between certain letter pairs (usually bringing them closer together) to make the text look better. You can get kerning from a printing press by physically using a block with the letter pair instead of one block with each letter. You can get it from a word processing program by including kerning instructions with the font so that the computer can go back and change the spacing where appropriate. You can’t get kerning from a typewriter because a typewriter has no way of knowing which letter’s coming next and no way of going back and fixing the spacing later.
Bush probably did punk out on the end of his Guard service, but those documents were undisputably faked.
A much better explanation than “they were typed an an IBM Selectric that wasn’t made at the time”.
Wha? Seems to me Sherrod is Rather, since she’s the one looking for work. Vilsak is CBS, the chickenshit network that wouldn’t stand up for one of its own, and which to this day has not done the legwork that would have shown Bush was a fucking deserter who, in other times, would have been stood up in front of a firing squad, the lazy prick.
Don’t give Frum praise, for the love of everything holy.
To quote John Cole:
The second paragraph is important. If things were still going the same as they were before, if the Tea Party was popular, Frum would be right along for the ride. He’s as reasonable as Tom Friedman is reasonable on foreign policy.
