In the least surprising news of the day, a federal judge has put an injunction on key parts of the Arizona immigration law, ruling that the Justice Department is likely to win its case arguing that the bill unconstitutionally preempts federal immigration law. Watch out for exploding wingnut brain-bits.

Hm, I was wondering what the noise was. Never heard an exploding brain before. We’ll see if this ruling carries the day when this case goes to trial, but for now, great news.
Also, did anyone notice the Fair Sentencing crack cocaine bill that was passed today? Seems like a bit of a twist on the “stealth” progress by Obama and the Dems that Fighting Bill mentioned yesterday. From my minimal understanding of this issue, it seems like this could have a huge impact on minority communities. (Sorry Booman, I realize this is a tangent better suited for an open thread. But there hasn’t been one for awhile and I figured a “Casual Observation” was an OK substitute.)
Ssh. Someone might hear about this.
Yes, and it passed on a voice vote in both the House (today) and the Senate. Quite a bit of progress on that front, although it still doesn’t reach parity between crack and powder cocaine.
That is great news.
even a guy like me, living as i do in an alternative universe of state permanent of outrage and relentlessly negative, thinks that’s great news, and I’ll be making a point of giving credit to the democrats for making some progress.
First time in 40 years that a law has passed to reduce sentences.
According to the CBO, it will also save $42 million in prison costs in just 5 years,
