Apparently inspired by the ADL-Ground Zero mosque controversy and the appeals of prominent Republicans like Newt Gingrich and Tea Partiers, a wave of anti-Islamic bigotry seems to be spreading across the country. As reported by Laurie Goodstein of the Times,
In Murfreesboro, Tenn., Republican candidates have denounced plans for a large Muslim center proposed near a subdivision, and hundreds of protesters have turned out for a march and a county meeting.
In late June, in Temecula, Calif., members of a local Tea Party group took dogs and picket signs to Friday prayers at a mosque that is seeking to build a new worship center on a vacant lot nearby.
In Sheboygan, Wis., a few Christian ministers led a noisy fight against a Muslim group that sought permission to open a mosque in a former health food store bought by a Muslim doctor.
Expressed fear that the Constitution would be replaced by Sharia Law was one reason for the protests. And once again we see the term “moderate Islam” used to characterize these religious groups as if Islam was inherently extremist and widely prevalent among them. Ignorance and bigotry are bedfellows for sure, but better is expected from news sources like the Huffington Post.
In an update on the ADL-Ground Zero mosque controversy, Fareed Zakaria returned the Hubert Humphrey Award for First Amendment Freedoms he received from the ADL five years ago, stating that, after the ADL’s intolerant position on the Ground Zero mosque, “I cannot in good conscience keep that award.”
Over the same controversy, Paul Krugman, the economist, spoke out on the Anti-Defamation League opinion. Responding to a piece by Peter Beinart who wrote about the ADL’s double standards, as Hateful Ground Zero Hypocrisy, Krugman, a Jewish liberal, let his views on Abe Foxman, director of the ADL, be known.
Paul Krugman’s views:
“Krugman its seems has a problem with the politics of Israel/Palestine in the U.S., and how the pro-Israel agenda got hijacked by the Likudniks” ( Phil Weiss’ conclusion).

Is this further evidence that a Lebanon invasion will come soon, so that Israel can save face after the 2006 defeat? 1,200 Lebanese, mostly innocent civilians and a lot of children were killed during that invasion. How many more does Israel’s face need to be considered saved?
It has been reported that Israel developed a new cluster bomb in which most of the bomblets will be exploded after impact, unlike the American version which went on killing and maiming children even today. Maybe they want to try it out.
If the plan to use the discredited investigation into the Hariri killing doesnt set off a civil war in Lebanon then other ways will no doubt be considered. Israel may not fancy another round against Hezbollah after having lost the first two however.
There are reports that France wants to send in special forces under a UN mandate to forcibly disarm Hezbollah. Sounds somewhat foolhardy to me considering what happened to the Israel;i special ofrces last time around but….
There are reports the discredited investigation will be used to take further UN action directly against Hezbollah….
The big problem of course is Hezbollah at the end of the day represents a very large percventage of the people of Lebanon and probably over half of those actually living in the country. Indeed Hezbollah are themselves a major poltical party made up of Lebanese people. It also remains to be seen whether the Sunnis, Christians (half of whom are allied to Hezbollah) and the Saudi’s who have made major investment want to see problems in a country where they are making lots of money right now.
Have a link on the French proposal?
.
There are a few articles of recent disturbances between civilians and UNIFIL forces under French command in the South Lebanon border area. No direct link found in suggested commandos for UNIFIL.

I even know some Maronites who are pro-Hezballah since 2006.
From the US State Department Terrorist Organization List:
13.HAMAS (Islamic Resistance Movement)
14.Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami/Bangladesh (HUJI-B)
15.Harakat ul-Mujahidin (HUM)
16.Hizballah (Party of God)
17.Islamic Jihad Group
18.Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU)

Anyone know why Hizballah is on the list? Hizballah was essentially created in the aftermath of Sharon’s devastating attack of Lebanon in 1982, when over 20,000 Lebanese, mostly civilians and children, were just slaughtered by a US backed modern military force. Its purpose was to defend southern Lebanon, as I understand it.
Oh, I forgot. It is a Muslim organization.
Basically because Israel and its neo-con friends wanted it on the list, and after Hezbollah twice humiliated the Israeli military they wont be coming off any time soon.
Interestingly most Israeli media, if not all, when reproting on Hassan Nasrullah’s speech actually edited out all the stuff about intercepting drone footage and and remarks of ex-Israeli spies. Apparently it would be as humiliating as the indestructible Israeli built tanks that were knocked out with 40 year old missiles to have the Israeli public know that Israeli intelligence was succesfully hacked on such a routing basis and their spy networks swept up with such ease.
It is always interesting to watch propagnda organizations portrayedas free media orgnas at work.
Hasan Nasrallah gave a speech today clearly aimed at the arab public in which he showed hacked Israeli drone footage over years including lots of the route and every corner of the Hariri route when killed which was taken just before the bombing. Israel might not have a headache with its western friends over this circumstantial evidence but it sure just lined arab street opinion up behind Hezbollah and if the UN dont finally relent and agree to investigate a possible Israeli connection in the Hariri murder the already pretty much discredited report is going to be seen as a complete farce. The ability of the son of Hariri to go along with the Un report just also suddenly got a lot harder.
Why wasnt Israel investigated when just about every other player in the region was?
“There are reports that France wants to send in special forces under a UN mandate to forcibly disarm Hezbollah.”
That looks like some well-timed chest-thumping from the rather unpopular Sarkozy. I doubt it will happen.
maybe she understands better on the way out.
Kind of amazing, all the same.

So it ain’t over. Looks like the ADL has tentacles much longer than we thought.
Another mosque story,

Looks like the ADL-Ground Zero mosque controversy is still playing out.
At least the Freedom Defense Initiative makes no bones about its Islamophobia being just another pro-Israel effort. LINK: http://freedomdefense.typepad….

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Hard to believe that it is all part of a right wing Zionist network of propagandists, apparently using the internet to distract people from Israel’s occupation/colonization that is continuing in Palestine.
