The whole SlutWalks thing is an interesting development. I had seen a reference to the term, but I didn’t know what it meant. I guess it traces back to some Toronto police officer who said women shouldn’t dress like sluts if they expect not to get raped. That’s a widespread opinion, especially in more conservative cultures than our own. I never did understand why the blame lay primarily with the woman. Doesn’t the man have to exercise some self-control? If someone leaves something valuable unattended are you able to steal it and then argue persuasively that the victim was at fault? At a minimum, you’re still a thief. And when is a thief ever a better person than the absent-minded person they steal from?
The slut double-standard is one thing. But the blaming the woman for her own rape is several degrees more offensive. I don’t care what culture you come from, that should be a losing argument. And it should offend people.
Yes, it should offend people.
Jeez, a woman should be able to walk freely with no fear of being raped as well as a child from a pederast.
I leave my keys in the car with the windows down when I go shopping at my local market.
I really get pissed when people blame the victim, & especially when the perpetrator uses the excuse that how she was dressed, was asking for it.
Now let`s compare that to how a pedophile could blame his victim. She was 14 but had the body of a 10 year old.
Can`t people walk around safely anymore.
It reminds me of the movie with Jodie Foster, a screenplay from a true story.
I think leaving your keys in your unlocked car is quite a bit more “asking for it” than wearing skimpy clothes. After all, what’s the point of leaving your car so vulnerable?
Then why should a woman or a child be vulnerable.
Why should I be asking for “it”, because I believe in the better nature of humans.
I go to biker meets with my priceless Knucklehead, along with thousands of other bikers & none get stolen.
I should also mention that I do not lock my doors when I leave my home.
But that`s how I roll.
Don’t get me wrong. If someone steals your car or bike, they are the ones to blame. But it is not very hard to take your keys with you and there doesn’t seem to be any compelling reason not to.
Years ago I was tboned in an intersection. Guy jumped out of his car and screamed at me that it was my fault going through my green light when he was already there going through his red light. He was still screaming when the police arrived to cart him off.
People who defend themselves, and those that let them, by using the slut walking logic just plain have a screw loose.
I’m going to post a link to a diary that was written on the subject of rape here at BT almost 5 years ago now. It was but one of many written by some pretty extraordinary women who populated this blog at that time. Some, only a few really, are still here.
I saved many of the diaries because I was personally in awe of the raw honesty and courage it took to write them and share them in the open. Although, at least for me, BT didn’t feel like “the open” back then. It was more of a community. Maybe those women felt that way too and it helped them to share the amazing insights and experiences that they left here in the archives.
Most of all though, as a man I felt as if a rare opportunity to learn was being offered by these women to me and other men here. So, I shut up and read…and read.
I would like to believe that I’m a bit of a better person for having had the luck to be here at that same time.

Super,
I first met you on a diary about child abuse & the mothers who wouldn`t put a stop to their child`s abuse by their husbands.
I did get flack about my position then, but still have the same position.
Nice to see you & hope you & yours are well.
I imagine that you remember my take on things as does BooMan.
To tell you the truth, Knuck, I don’t recall your position. There aren’t many positions to take in those situations really.
That’s one subject that I have a lot to say about, and I’ll leave it at that.
Thankfully we have those archives. Those of us who were around at that point in time were indeed quite fortunate. Hard to believe that was about five years ago.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
It is a little hard to believe. When Bush swiped the second election, the catalyst that brought me to political blogs, and I envisioned another four years of his insanity it looked like an impossibly long road. Now we’re two years past his second term and into a different brand of state madness.
And the clock keeps ticking.
Dennis Perrin’s take on the madness:
Killer Highs. A bit off topic, but since the topic of a different flavor of state madness got mentioned, I couldn’t resist.
Thanks for that link. Spot on observations, there. I’ve seen the same shit pretty much everywhere online. My Facebook page is like a post-apocalyptic wasteland with nothing but tumbleweeds dropping in, since I have this unfortunate habit of going against the grain pretty openly. I mostly imagine my “friends” and family members having pity on me, for surely I am lost….
Forget about it in real life. You turn down the death weed and the thumping is for real.

Girls learn at a young age that they are targets of violence. I thought of this post last night as I watched a film on PBS of Mississippi racists explaining that the three murdered Freedom Riders were probably asking for it. Black men carried signs saying “I am a man” forcing us to see that. But soon they laid claim to all the ugly names they were called, and now only the hateful dare to use those names.
Like the man said – woman is the nigger of the world.
The world is what it is, but yes we can change it. It’s good to know that some fathers are asking those questions.
I wrote something pertaining to this during a FB argument with a bunch of LIBERALS. Far lefties, too. It was disgusting. I eventually turned my argument into an essay for a class:
In other words, if you didn’t want me to punch you in the face, you probably shouldn’t be an apologist for rape. Because if you are, you’re just asking for it, amiright?
