The quote of the day comes from a tea-partier who showed up too late to gain entry to John McCain’s town hall meeting.
Sheila McCurdy, a 70-year-old business owner and tea-party supporter, couldn’t get into the event, but lingered outside. “If we’re hobbits, then he’s a gremlin,” she said.
What went on inside the meeting was also highly amusing.
Olympia Snowe On Debt Ceiling Debate: ‘I’ve Never Seen A Worse Congress’
This Congress is one for the books. Dysfunctional would be an understatement.
Hobbits? I would have gone with “orcs” or “creepy disembodied burning eyes that serve no useful purpose except to annoy”.
The original Star Trek had an episode where the alien monster was a formless, very white gaseous cloud that sucked all the blood out of every creature it encountered. Like that.
Is that the classic episode entitled “Obession” in which Kirk confronts a creature he battled eleven years previous while serving as an ensign aboard the USS Republic?
Yes, I’m a nerd.
I think hobbits is a reference to something McCain quoted on the Senate floor.
Gremlins is actually the part of the woman’s quote that made zero sense to me.
There’s an important lesson to be learned here: anytime you find yourself trying to translate / interpret / understand a Tea Party supporter quote, remember there are only 2 possible outcomes: a) immediately realizing it doesn’t make any sense or b) thinking about it for awhile before coming to the conclusion that it doesn’t make any sense.
So if you find yourself short on time during the course of your average day, it’s kind of the low-hanging fruit.
It did have to do with some editorial he read from the Wall Street Journal or something. Maybe he doesn’t realize what freaks just re-elected him. Maybe he doesn’t care anymore. I doubt he can do another term – he probably knows this too – so fuck ’em.
Its a reference to this. Video at the link.

“Frustrated by the sniping of conservative critics who opoose House Speaker John Boehner’s plan to raise the debt ceiling, Arizona Sen. John McCain unleashed on tea party groups Wednesday.
The former Republican presidential candidate went on a tirade against conservative groups that are urging House members to reject Boehner’s plan, and pulled a few lines from this morning’s Wall Street Journal editorial which dismissed them as “tea party hobbits.”
“The idea seems to be that if the House GOP refuses to raise the debt ceiling, a default crisis or gradual government shutdown will ensue, and the public will turn en masse against . . . . Barack Obama,” McCain said, quoting the Journal article. “The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the tea-party Hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor.”
“This is the kind of crack political thinking that turned Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell into GOP Senate nominees,” McCain added, still reading from the article.”
He’s right, but he should of course realize the hypocrisy of having empowered the entire movement by picking Palin 3 years ago. He won’t of course, which is why his indignation feels to righteous to him. Why should he be held responsible for what happens after he tips the boulder over the cliff? Those people shouldn’t have put their house underneath a giant boulder!
We made him do it.
