Here are a few highlights of what might be happening to all us of on the East Coast over the next 96 hours.
We’ve all been watching the computer models, which have been steadily moving their forecast tracks for Irene more to the east–first into Florida, then Georgia, then South Carolina, then North Carolina, then offshore of North Carolina–and it seemed that this storm would do what so many many storms have done in the past, brush the Outer Banks of North Carolina, then head out to sea. Irene will not do that. Irene will likely hit Eastern North Carolina, but the storm is going northwards after that, and may deliver an extremely destructive blow to the mid-Atlantic and New England states. I am most concerned about the storm surge danger to North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and the rest of the New England coast. Irene is capable of inundating portions of the coast under 10 – 15 feet of water, to the highest storm surge depths ever recorded. I strongly recommend that all residents of the mid-Atlantic and New England coast familiarize themselves with their storm surge risk.
The models have edged their tracks westwards in the last cycle of runs, and there are no longer any models suggesting that Irene will miss hitting the U.S. The threat to eastern North Carolina has increased, with several of our top models now suggesting a landfall slightly west of the Outer Banks is likely, near Morehead City. After making landfall on the North Carolina coast Saturday afternoon or evening, Irene is likely to continue almost due north, bringing hurricane conditions to the entire mid-Atlantic coast, from North Carolina to Long Island, New York. This makes for a difficult forecast, since a slight change in Irene’s track will make a huge difference in where hurricane conditions will be felt. If Irene stays inland over eastern North Carolina, like the ECMWF and GFDL models are predicting, this will knock down the storm’s strength enough so that it may no longer be a hurricane once it reaches New Jersey. On the other hand, if Irene grazes the Outer Banks and continues northwards into New Jersey, like the GFS model is predicting, this could easily be a Category 2 hurricane for New Jersey and Category 1 hurricane for New York City. A more easterly track into Long Island would likely mean a Category 2 landfall there.
Irene’s large size, slow motion, arrival at high tide, and Category 3 strength at landfall in North Carolina will likely drive a storm surge of 8 – 10 feet into the heads of bays in Pamlico Sound, and 3 – 6 feet in Albemarle Sound. As the storm progresses northwards, potential storm surge heights grow due to the shape of the coast and depth of the ocean, though the storm will be weakening. If Irene is a Category 1 storm as it crosses into Virginia, it can send a storm surge of 4 – 8 feet into Chesapeake Bay and Norfolk. I give a 50% chance that the surge from Irene in those locations will exceed the record surges observed in 2003 during Hurricane Isabel. The region I am most concerned about, though, is the stretch of coast running from southern Maryland to Central New Jersey, including Delaware and the cities of Ocean City and Atlantic City. A Category 1 hurricane can bring a storm surge of 5 – 9 feet here. Irene’s large size, slow movement, and arrival at the highest tide of the month could easily bring a surge one Category higher than the storm’s winds might suggest, resulting in a Category 2 type inundation along the coast, near 10 – 15 feet. This portion of the coast has no hurricane experience, and loss of life could be heavy if evacuation orders are not heeded. I give a 30% chance that the storm surge from Irene will bring water depths in excess of 10 feet to the coasts of Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.
NOAA’s SLOSH model predicts that a mid-strength Category 2 hurricane with 100-mph winds could drive a 15 – 20 foot storm surge to Manhattan, Queens, Kings, and up the Hudson River. JFK airport could be swamped, southern Manhattan would flood north to Canal Street, and a surge traveling westwards down Long Island Sound might breach the sea walls that protect La Guardia Airport. Many of the power plants that supply the city with electricity might be knocked out, or their docks to supply them with fuel destroyed. The more likely case of a Category 1 hurricane hitting at high tide would still be plenty dangerous, with waters reaching 8 – 12 feet above ground level in Lower Manhattan. Given the spread in the models, I predict a 20% chance that New York City will experience a storm surge in excess of 8 feet that will over-top the flood walls in Manhattan and flood the subway system. This would most likely occur near 8 pm Sunday night, when high tide will occur and Irene should be near its point of closest approach. Such a storm surge could occur even if Irene weakens to a tropical storm on its closest approach to New York City.
So, basically, either North Carolina takes the full brunt of this storm or we’re looking at an unimaginable amount of destruction just from the storm surge alone. Of course, the wind damage will be extensive and flash flooding will be widespread. I know this is exactly what our economy needs.
And of course Cantor has said there will be no disaster aid for his home state without corresponding budget cuts. Here in NC they’ve already declared a state of emergency.
i saw that. If this was a movie, it would be too funny. Instead it’s sad.
I have an interview on Friday for a job. If I get it and stay in the area, I am going to run against that prick one day.
you do that! please!
doesn’t he have a pr person to prevent him from saying things like that? he truly hasn’t a clue
He could tell everyone he kicks kittens off of bridges on Sundays after Synagogue (I don’t actually know that he goes to temple), and shoots ball boys at tennis matches at the country club. This district is tea party central.
“I know this is exactly what our economy needs. “
good thing we’ve decided to pay down the deficit. We would have wasted that money paying for first responders, infrastructure repairs, and other silly trinkets.
I fear big oil will manufacture a gas shortage if there is any damage to those refineries in NJ/PA.
Some people I know who live near the Pamlico Sound just got the call–they’ve gotten a mandatory order to evacuate. I just commented on another thread about all the prep we’ve done to survive. If it bounces along the Outer Banks or the eye comes 60-100 miles overland and punches us in the face, we’re in for a hellava ride either way.
All things considered, folks in northeastern NC are better prepared for this kind of thing than the NYC SLOSH model/storm surge disaster movie scenario. There aren’t that many people out here in eastern NC and most of ’em are kinda stupid so I guess I’m rooting for us to get the brunt of the storm. I’m willing to suffer for the benefit of the rest of the Mid-Atlantic. ;-/
The $24 billion in damage (or whatever the number ends up being) is the cost to hire folks to repair/replace all the destroyed factories and underwater second homes (irony! mortgage pun!).
That smells like jobs, jobs, jobs.
Too bad the whole effort will be just to get back to ‘square zero’ – as in not quite where we were – even after a huge effort (metaphorical for Obama era?).
I’m fine with earthquakes but this kind of stuff scares the hell out of me. I’d be on first plane heading west if I lived in an its path.
Also, the local economy has gotten a boost from the hurricane prep and evacuation. The nearby highway looks like rush hour in the Westbound lanes, lines at the gas stations and the parking lots in front of the eateries are full. All the Lowe’s from Raleigh eastwards have sold out of multiple shipments of generators. People are buying and stocking up on stuff they don’t normally buy like canned meats and tuna, gallons of water they usually get from the tap, bags & bags of ice, flashlights, transistor radios, tarps, plywood sheets, nail guns, etc. Let’s not forget the extra booze and beer being sold as people prepare to do without their TV’s!
Personally, we’ve pumped close to $1000 into the local economy this week–money we would not have spent without an imminent threat. Now, of course, for upcoming days/weeks no one will be buying much because all the friggin’ bread is already gone! And if the rivers rise and stay up, cutting us off from future supplies of gas for the generators and coffee and beer… Or people are homeless and jobless… well, then the cannibalism starts if FEMA is underfunded and Congress doesn’t cough up some Disaster Aid and employ some construction workers, bridge builders, etc.
This disaster will be terrible for the insurance companies but the situation could end up demanding an increase in the federal deficit that jump starts the whole economy back to life. Think of all the infrastructure that will need to be re-built here in America by American workers! That or this is it–the USA collapses because the Mid-Atlantic coastal survivors are going to be mean, pissed off and heavily armed.
The stuff people are buying to prepare for the hurricane is increased demand that will be offset by no demand for a few days because no one can get to the shops to work or buy.
I actually think people need to remember the broken window fallacy.
If someone breaks a bakery window, that creates work for the glassmaker. But the money the baker spends on glass was going to be spent on a new suit. Instead of having a glass window and a suit, he only has a glass window. Money was shifted from a suitmaker to a glassmaker, but otherwise nothing changed.
This hurricane will transfer money from homeowners and insurance agencies to construction workers, but we won’t be better off for it, overall. We’ll just have a bunch of broken shit that needs repairing. Lots of ruined lives, too. And some lost lives.
Except that the baker has a credit card, so he gets a suit AND a window, the glassmaker gets some cash, and the credit card company ALSO gets paid. It’s win / win for everyone. Except, you know, for the whole baker’s debt thing. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
The baker’s fallacy does not apply in this case. Out here in coastal NC flood and hurricane/wind insurance is mandatory. We pay 20% extra on premiums to cover the risk. The broken window is covered by insurance and your hypothetical baker still has the cash to buy a new suit he probably doesn’t need.
Previously during a tropical storm we did have at tree fall on our roof and not only did it not cost us a dime out of our own pockets, the agent insisted we get a new and better roof to replace the old one. Our premium did not go up.
We already have a lot of broken and inadequate infrastructure but we have been “making do” because it is “good enough.” In rebuilding, we have the opportunity to build better bridges and more energy-efficient homes, replace dangerous, outdated power plants, etc. We redistribute the money from the insurance companies to ordinary people who need jobs and to the manufacturers of the materials required. The broken shit gets replaced with new, possibly improved stuff.
Lots of lives are already ruined out here by unemployment and being lost to disease and despair. If people heed the mandatory evacuations, few lives will be lost, fewer perhaps than the natural erosion of the poverty conditions out here. Yes, we’ll SUFFER but we could come out ahead. We could be better off, overall. After the last storm, it really was boom times for the construction guys out here AND their material suppliers. It rippled out and had a positive effect.
Well, your thoughts create your reality.
The internet has enabled the human race to think about every conceivable “bad” event at the speed of light.
East Coast Earthquake? Are you kidding? Coincidence? And now a Hurricane? Wow. Obama’s bad luck continues, I guess.
That’s really why we are in an economic “recession”, or “depression”,or whatever…
The stock market tanks based on Psychology.
Health Care costs skyrocket because 85+ percent of medical issues are mental projections (I know, it’s like Perry’s “why don’t you believe in science”…but why does every legitimate double-blind study have to account for the PLACEBO effect)…
I know you don’t want to believe it, but the human mind is so much more powerful than you know…
For Philosophy Majors, the real question is…
Do you believe in the primacy of Matter, or Consciousness?
Does Matter cause Consciousness?
Or does Consciousness cause Matter?
Evolution is real (Sorry Rick Perry)…but…
Does evolution create intelligence…
or does intelligence drive evolution?
This is the one area where I disagree with Mighty…sorry…Hated…Ayn Rand.
I believe in the primacy of Consciousness. The deeper Quantum Physics goes down the Rabbit Hole, the more we know it is true…(Google “Entanglement”, or “Double Slit Experiment”)
You don’t want to hear it, but…Consciousness is the cause, and Matter is the effect.
That’s why you can’t blame the Evil Rich…they are wealthy because they think about wealth…they are rich because they expect to be rich…I know, because once I was really poor because I expected to be poor…
I’m on the (South) East Coast (kind of…inland three hours)…so–Good Luck East Coast!
The more powerful our minds are, as a (human) race, the more we will head toward either Armageddon, or Paradise.
I’ll have what you’re having.
But is it True?
I think the more interesting question is “does it matter if it’s true?”
Does it?
If every individual creates his own reality, and we cannot blame external factore…i.e. evil corporations, etc….
Doesn’t it?
I love the Progressive ideal of protecting the weakest (i.e. in Christ’s words, “the least among us”) in our society…but we need to teach people how to have the environment be a product of them, and not be a product of their environment.
None of us create our own reality. No man is an island, yada yada yada.
As a group, we do collectively create a reality. Whether or not you want to call that reality’s effects on an individual’s life an ‘external factor’ or not is just a matter of semantics.
There are things that are real, and there are things we create. If I was the only human on the planet, I could still hike in the Rocky Mountains. They are real. Not because I think they’re real. They would exist even if I didn’t.
But if I was the only human on the planet, I couldn’t invest money in the stock market. That is a part of reality that is only existent because of human consciousness.
individual consciousness and shared human institutions (social structure) are two distinct entities, both are real. the issue here is whether my individual consciousness can influence the physical reality (Rocky Mts) and/ or influence social institutions. Just thinking about the Rocky Mts does not affect them, but if I persuade some coal co. to do mtn top removal on them that’s a different story. As far as social institutions go, even defining them is difficult not to mention influencing them. my state of mind towards the usa health care system is not going to provide health care for all usaians. electing progressives to congress, on the other hand …
Is that you Irene?
But is it True?
Is the eye approaching and you’re hitting the Jack Daniels?
But is it True?
Y’all seem to think that one has to be somehow inebriated to see what LFA is seeing?
You don’t.
In fact, you’ll see more if you are not.
Of course…media consumption is a very strong inebriator. And the mass media tell you over and over again that everything has a logical, line-level-of-consciousness explanation.
Now…you can take this even further.
LFA writes:
That is two-dimensional thinking.
What if both so-called “consciousness” and so-called “effect” are both cause and/or effect. What if there is a third force that so out-powers the other two as to make all of this…all of our hopes and worries, all of our dreams and fears…seem like the rantings of a very small idiot, “…all sound and fury, signifying nothing.” (Thank you, Will S. Thank you for everything.)
Consciousness is itself an effect of that third force. Call it “everything else.” Call it the life of Life. Call it Evolution. Call it sleep.
What the hell…I don’t care, take two aspirin and call it in the morning. (It won’t answer unless you have the right number, though. And that’s unlisted.)
Fuggedaboudit. Someone very wise once said to me “Relax. You’re not what you think you are.”
Or…as Ol’ Will S. so gracefully put it:
Bet on it.
Watch.
The Arab Spring continues.
Turning into Princess Summerfall Winterspring as we speak.
Bet on it.
All over the world.
On many levels.
Watch.
AG
So you are saying that we are Dream Characters in a Dream World?
If I am aware of my thoughts (i.e. Liberals suck), and my emotions (i.e. Anger at misguided Liberals (sorry…Progressives.)…and my physical body (i.e. my knee hurts)…
Who is aware of that…”Consciousness”…
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Who is it that is aware?
Sober up. This is a warning. Don’t spam the site.
There’s no “Spam”…
Trying to make a point…
No one can answer the Question.
Wow. And I thought I say dumb stuff when I’m drunk. Never thought to build a tree of comments saying the same thing over and over, though. That’s got to be pretty embarrassing tomorrow when you view the responses to your comments. That is a scary process some days.
Just. Wow. I can forgive though. People (including me) do some really dumb things under the influence. At least I’m not driving around town running down pedestrians or anything, I always tell myself.
Not gonna lie, this response to your own response definitely made me laugh out loud.
Trust Me…
Figure out who is aware…
It will shock you.
It was funny the first time. He needs to put down the Scotch bottle and go to sleep.
Well in fairness, I responded after the first self-response. It was quite funny at that point because I thought it was an accident.
FWIW, I’d be happy to take the scotch bottle.
This is 8th Grade metaphysics. If you really give a shit about these types of matters then educate yourself about how the brain works, how memory is stored, what happens when the brain is impaired, how consciousness manifests itself in hives and colonies, and all the other stuff that actual scientists and philosophers grapple with.
You act like these questions are unknowable and yet you assert that you know the answers. You can learn a lot more than you currently know if you’re interested.
Science talks about “Observable” features, using the “senses”…i.e. sight, hearing, smell, touch, etc.”…
But what about your thoughts..(i.e.”Tea Party People Suck”…)
Are your thoughts “Observable” with the “Five” senses?…
Which sense “Observes” them?
Eyes? Ears?
What about your Emotions?
Fear…Anger…Joy…Envy…Pride…
Which of the “Scientific” five senses “Observes” them?
According to your Religion of Science, since thoughts and emotions cannot be “Observed” by your “Five Senses”…THEY DON’T EXIST!
You tell me, Horatio.
I can take off your skull and play games with you brain. I can make you cry or feel rage or joy or envy or pride or feel pain.
I can give you drugs and make you insane, or sane.
What I can’t do is get you to sober up from my remote location.
Boo…
Sorry for the BUI last night…(blogging under the influence)…
But it doesn’t change the truth…
The Brain is an effect of the Mind…
Take my skull off…”I AM That I AM”…will not go away.
You are not your brain.
No.
That is not what I am saying.
Relax. You are not what you think you are.
You are not what you think.
You are not.
You.
Do you hear voices?
No?
Who said that?
Can you tell me what you are going to say next?
(Hint hint…betcha you can’t.)
Like dat.
Or…
G. I. Gurdjieff on “war.”
Further:
Or as someone equally wise once said to me…”Wake the fuck up.”
AG
Did you Wake Up?
If you did…I’ll pay you for the formula…
I discovered that I am sleeping 12 years ago…
And I still cannot wake myself up…
I Watch my thoughts…
I Watch my emotions…
I Watch my physical body…
I keep watching…
I watch now as my fingers move the keyboard…
This is the Great Secret…
Don’t we all hear voices…the voice in our head?
Who is that voice?
It is not us.
Horatio?
No, I’m saying that you’d have to be somehow inebriated to believe it the way it’s been put forth.
Will S…wow…
Shakespeare?
Third Force?
How do you feel about Gurdjieff? (spelling?)
I know that I am asleep…
and I can’t Wake Up…
Tell me more…
All the World IS a stage…
We cannot hide this knowledge anymore.
I call bullshit on this whole string of 30 or so comments insinuating the new age trope that “you create your own reality.” I happen to find it really, really offensive.
Personal example: I was a pretty good athlete in HS & college, and kept in shape thereafter. Did not drink, smoke, do drugs, etc. I got a terminal disease and was given a year or two to live when I was 30.
Now, 20 years later, after three comas, an experimental double organ transplant, a stroke, three cancers, and 17 years and counting of a suppressed immune system, I’m still alive and have a relatively good quality of life. The fact that I’m still alive is in part – in part – due to my good attitude. But the fact that my health will be crap for however long I do (or don’t) continue to live, the fact that I lost my career, and the fact I was destroyed financially by a random illness are things no amount of wishing would have changed.
Moreover, if I’d had the foresight to live in Canada or Europe, two of those three things – the career and the financial ruin – wouldn’t have happened. Which brings me to my next point. Systems and institutions matter, too. The “you create your own reality” construct is often used politically, both by conservatives and by privileged white liberals, to make any kind of failure – in fact, sometimes any kind of difference at all – into a moral failure, because you just didn’t care or try hard enough or think the right thoughts. And into a justification for shredding the social safety net, because It’s All Their Own Fault. Bull fucking shit.
I’m not angry or bitter about my illness. Shit happens, and I got a big pile of it. I also got a miraculous second chance to live far beyond what anyone predicted, and for that I’m happy and grateful. But no matter how competently I manage my illness, or how many good vibes I eminate, it is never going to go away, and I am never going to get back all the things I’ve lost as a result. And there are literally tens of millions of people in this country right now that are similarly seriously fucked because of events beyond their control – health, job loss, disability, family circumstances, natural disaster, whatever.
Can you influence your reality? Absolutely, and sometimes quite a bit. Sometimes, far more than we suspect. But sometimes, stuff happens, and sometimes, you never have a chance. “You create your own reality” as a blanket statement is metaphysical bullshit, and politically it’s a cheap excuse to sneer at the less fortunate. I can’t begin to express the contempt I have for this concept and for the people, regardless of political persuasion, who espouse it.
Well…there is also our Karma…
Condemn not, and you will not be condemed…
Judge not, and you will not be Judged…
Forgive…and you will be Forgiven…
You will be Okay…
I will pray for you…
You will be Okay…
My wife reminded me of some practical matters about hurricane preparation.
Freeze supplies of water in your freezer. Your food will last a little longer after the power goes out.
Sterno or propane stove that can be used indoors.
Camping headlamps make cooking at night easier.
A non-electric can opener.
Hand crank radio or lots of batteries.
And note that air conditioners, cordless phones, network routers, and modems don’t work without electricity. Make plans for the withdrawal symptoms.
thanks, will prepare tomorrow I guess. our building is only one inch above sea level, so …
Ack! Keep yer feet up, Errol! Good luck, all you east coasters.
Yep, got kerosene lamps and a good book to read.
The worse thing is going to be doing without AC.
What!!!???
Is Atlantic City gone already!!!???
Oh.
Nevermind…
Yore freind…
Emily
I read some many years ago that Wal-Mart alwaays has a run on Strwberry Pop-Tarts just before hurricanes come to an area. There is good reason for this and they send truckloads in to their stores expecting hurricanes right before they hit for a reason. Buy as many boxes of Pop Tarts that you can get your hands on. They don’t need to be heated. They’re instant carbs (energy.) They’re waterproof in those sealed Mylar packets. And they taste pretty good, too. They also keep a long time if needed for future emergencies. They are not the ideal food but they are extremely versatile in emergency situations.
So you want many gallons of bottled water (because your water system will not work right after a flood) and many boxes of Pop-Tarts.
Why strawberry in particular?
Just because it’s the most popular flavor. I prefer Cherry myself.
Good ‘heads up.’ My first thought seems odd – if infrastructure is damaged, drinking water supply may be cut off. I’d grab some containers and fill them.
For those with infrastructure comments – Levees.org started watching U.S. neglect post Katrina.
If you want a look at scary – the U.K. just cut off the budget for flood control, setting the stage for a confrontation with insurers no longer willing to cover housing in flood prone areas.
I keep a file ‘Water -Wealth and Power’ at opitslinkfest.blogspot.com ( see Topical Index ) that was inspired by a look at the header ‘Hydraulic Warfare’ in Wikipedia. The original concept was the post ‘End of an Era.’
I’ve been through a good blow. Not fun at the best of times.
Even if the electricity goes off, most places have enough water in water tanks to last through a short outage. If the water containers you freeze for ice in the freezer are clean, they can double for water storage.
You might fill bathtubs and have buckets handy to flush toilets.
So Booman-
What are you gonna do? Gonna get out of town (even Pittsburgh should be safe) or are you gonna ride it out?
I looked up your address in Google Earth today and looked at the satellite view. Scary shit. Surrounded by all of that forest. Those trees could kill if they were uprooted by strong winds and soggy soil but I think you’re in the hills so flooding shouldn’t be a problem.
Good luck. If I were religious I would pray for you. But you still have the chance to get the hell out of there. Just pack the family up in the car and drive west.
I’m worried. That is all.
BTW-
Once this thing is over, I really hope you own a good quality chain saw. You may really need it.
And if you don’t need the wood for your own fireplace, letting it dry until midwinter can net you a little cash selling bundles in suburban areas with lots of condos at $2 to $5 each, depending on what the local market is.
Someone with a pickup truck and a good chain saw could make a hell of alot of (under-the-table cash) money in the coming weeks. Just drive around, find downed trees and make bids to homeowners.
listening to chain saw outside my window right now. at least the city is cutting down the precarious tree next our building before rather than after. ran into a neighbor in the supermarket just now, who says we are actually multiple feet above sea level, not to worry (35 ft for his bldg). it does not help that the storm is to hit this area around new moon high tide.
What city / state are you in? Hopefully not on the actual coast.
not the coast per se, NJ, across the Hudson River from Manhattan, close to the river
Ok, you’re freaking me out now.
At least he didn’t make fun of your patio furniture.
Right?
That’s funny. His actual cabin is not really visible in that dense forest though, at least I don’t think so. There are some large homes or barns nearby but no cabin or patio furniture visible.
Not to worry. I rode this one out at Guantanamo Bay and am still here to remember it (the surf was pretty darned impressive). Try to resist the temptation to go out sightseeing after it passes. The downed power lines can be sneaky if they are still energized.
