Today is the 48th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. I had plans to attend the King memorial dedication with my son and family. I was fully prepared to embrace the collective amnesia of the last year of Dr. King’s life to enjoy the feel good moment. Now that the dedication has been cancelled and I’m stuck in the house, I’m honoring Dr. King by reading the 2nd most defining speech of his life, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,” delivered on April 4, 1967 otherwise known as the day Dr. King became the most hated man in America.
I often wonder how he would feel about this. He knew when he gave that speech his fate and the fate of our nation would forever change. So why do people who say they love and honor him dishonor him by pretending like the last year of his life never happened?
Editorial pages all across the country will honor Dr. King’s legacy by retelling the modern civil rights’ movement he lead, but not one will apologize for tarnishing his legacy.
The New York Times won’t apologize for calling the speech “wasteful and self-defeating.” The Washington Post won’t admit it erred in saying, “Many who have listened to King with respect will never again accord him the same confidence. He has diminished his usefulness to his cause, to his country, and to his people.” Time won’t apologize for calling him a traitor not what’s left of Life for accusing him if spreading communist propaganda.
And many of the same Negroes who now claim to have stood with Dr. King through thick and thin won’t remember how they turned their backs on him. And you damn sure won’t ever hear mention of him being blacklisted at LBJ’s White House and smeared by the great white liberal as a communist subversive.
When the the dedication is finally rescheduled I’ll certainly be there with tears falling and holding my son’s hand, but you better bet I’ll be remembering his last year of life even if I’m the only one.
I need not pause to say how very delighted I am to be here tonight, and how very delighted I am to see you expressing your concern about the issues that will be discussed tonight by turning out in such large numbers. I also want to say that I consider it a great honor to share this program with Dr. Bennett, Dr. Commager, and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, and some of the distinguished leaders and personalities of our nation. And of course it’s always good to come back to Riverside Church [New York].
OMG. I’ve been watching this show online for the past week. I’m mad that I never watched it before. It really is an excellent show. Not many shows make me literally LOL!
Oooh Cabingirl, I have to ask what you are knitting. I have been sewing buttons on a sweater I just finished and working on a little cardi that I have been avoiding. The yarn is 100% cotton–so it is a little slow going.
My LYS usually has a stitch n bitch today but it was cancelled.
It’s an Inky Dinky sweater for Finn, in madelinetosh DK superwash, colorway well water. 🙂
I’m hoping to finish it up this week while I’m on my stay-cation. What sweater did you just finish? (I was actually thinking it’s time to revive my weekly knitting diary now that football season is about to start back up).
That sweater is totally awesome. Even better with the hat. I love that hat.
Can you even buy stuff that cool in the stores? I don’t think so. I’m not in the market for baby clothes but I rarely see a baby so fashionably dressed. Really nice stuff.
Great sweater! Right after I posted we lost power, but I knit the “Audrey in Unst” by Gudrun Johnston in MadelineTosh Pashmina (big splurge!!). Gudrun’s designs are wonderful. I think her website is The Shetland Trader. She is also on Ravelry. If you are on Ravelry, I am MominMaine. I will post pictures sometime in the next few days on my project page.
Best. Show. Ever. I’m watching it right now, too.
The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell, to be precise (just about over, so maybe I’ll choose from Season 2 this time).
Good luck, you guys. Tornado warnings for your area aplenty.
Man, if I had known there would be cupcakes, I would have come out to shelter with you guys.
We offered…
It was CBtE’s birthday…Irene crashed the party.
Who’s CBIE? That would suck to have some bitch hurricane wreck my birthday. I tell you…
Cabin Boy the Elder, as he has been known around these parts.
Cupcakes!
So you still have power? Great.
All looks great fun and delicious. Knitting – what a beautiful pattern and beautiful wool!!

Dr. Heschel said to me: “Young man, only big men can achieve big things. Small men cannot fulfill big missions. Dr. King was a big man.”
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."

I’m no expert at knitting or anything like that but my guess would be a cardigan sweater (from the bottom-up).
