My hurricane preparations are complete. I just saw the president on CNN heading a meeting at FEMA. He got all the governors to say on tape that they’ve gotten everything they need, so we should not be having any ‘heckuva job, Brownie’ moments. What’s going on where you are? It a light rain here in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Nothing here in NYC. Just Cloudy. public transport shut down.
that’s gotta be a weird feeling.
Good luck to you and the rest of our East Coasters. I’m sure you’ll all pull through just fine, though I think the mess is going to take quite a while to clear.
Out of curiosity, how are you feeling about the whole thing? I’ve been in similar situations and I’m usually just kind of anxious and excited for things to hit – the sense of dread people might assume is there just isn’t. But maybe that’s just me.
This time, the sense of dread may be directly proportional to TV exposure — especially the ‘Jaws’ background music on The Weather Channel.
the outer bands are here now. Big gusts of wind. The rain is still nothing out of the ordinary but radar says that’s about to change.
I’m enjoying baking birthday cupcakes for CBtE and making chickpea chili for dinner and just generally hanging out in my cozy house with all the boys while it rains. I think we’re ready – we’ve got plenty of water, a coleman stove, electricity…We’ll see how it feels after a day without power. 🙂
Live webcam and emergency radio traffic out on Long Island (Bellmore) if anyone is interested. Looks a little breezier now than this morning.
From the above radio link just now, NY Harbor surge predicted to be 5′, heard as much as 8′ out on LI, hurricane force winds at JFK tomorrow by 8 am – gusts to 85 mph. From Nassau Weather Observation Group, WX2LI.
Maybe you mean should not be having any “heckuva job” moments?
Anyone else just ripping through their food supplies already? I haven’t had munchies this bad since.. since..
yes, I bought some delicious things Then realized they all require electricity, so …
Can you prepare some ahead of time?
The worst part of a longish outage in warm weather here at our place is the lack of refrigeration. In winter it’s the lack of the oil furnace; the food just goes in a cooler in the woodshed.
Here’s hoping any food you’re able to prepare will keep.
Honestly, when I think I’ve lived outdoors for long stretches — a primary residence, not a camping adventure — I’m sometimes amazed.
Thanks, will try to figure that out. Made lots of rice already and stockpiled ice, but didn’t really think past the rest yet. vegetables and fruit should be ok for some days. Interesting that you’ve lived outdoors for so much time. I so would like that.
I think it should be a matter of one’s own choice, with full preparation & awareness — alas, my situations were forced. Thankfully the changes occurred in the warmer months.
Best of luck with your meals. Do you have a cooler & one of those ice-pack things you cool in the fridge? They’re sold for camping; always good to have & will keep your food for quite a while.
Please wait at least 24 hours before resorting to cannibalism.
raining outside, just repaired a downspout with duct tape, pork loin on the grill, tomatoes canning on the stove.
gonna hit the basement in a few to make sure none of my tools are on the floor, in case of flooding.
oh, and waiting. waiting. waiting.
speaking of which, just got a robocall from the insurance co. warning us to move things away from windows and doors then describing in detail how to file a claim
Turns out I have a bad pipe, I’m getting some water. This sucks.
That does suck. We have the pump running in the basement.
After an eerie stillness earlier, we’ve got heavy steady rain. Did the shopping yesterday, no more reason to go out this weekend. Losing power will be a big P I A, but otherwise I have no personal worries. (I’m up at about 2500′, on a mountainside; we tend not to flood.)
Wishing everyone in Irene’s path safety & serenity.
Stay safe and dry, ww!
So far so good, CG. Thank you. Wishing you the same.

Wonder if French Press Works with No Power
They generally would, considering there’s no plug.
🙂
That was my favorite one on the list. 😉
I’m in the NY line of fire and The World column describes it perfectly except that I have no teevee. so replace “watch the weather channel” with “discuss weather channel with neighbors”. Talked with a guy whose car has a flat tire, another who was loading his laundry into car and off to see his parents 20 min away and store owners boarding up windows with plywood. i keep wondering if we’re the stupid ppl they interview on teevee and ask “why didn’t you leave already?”
it’s strangely overcast and quiet, seems to be a million % humidity. should have laid in a supply of vodka as column 2 suggests. there’s no speculation about monday in my world. everything had better be functioning normally, or else …
I’ve been looking out the window and no sign of Irene AT ALL. NONE. ZILCH.
…
Of course, I live in SD.

Well, she’s so damn big I wouldn’t be surprised.
Meanwhile, it hit 109 in Houston this afternoon, tying an all-time record.
Anyone remember the CongressYokel last winter who proclaimed that DC’s blizzard proved global warming was a hoax? Wondering where he is right now.
Here, it’s sunny and 75 with a nice ocean breeze. We don’t tend to get extreme conditions in Seattle. Until the earthquake hits. Or the volcano comes back to life…
going to break out my Mt. St Helen’s coasters
Fairly heavy wind picking up…prolly like 20-25 mph atm. But it’s only like in spurts. For 2 minutes it will look like 30 mph or so, then slow to around 10 mph. The rain has been the same: torrential for 3 minutes, then nonexistent the next.
It’s supposed to get bad here around 8 pm and last until 12 am.
Still have power — oh, you already knew that ^_^
Well, you could be posting from your smartphone 🙂
105 degrees, 22% humidity, zero wind. If you guys could spare some of your hurricane we would gladly take some. We were praying it would cross into the Gulf and come pound on Texas. When they do that we usually get about a week of soaking rains as they dissipate. Maybe next time.
how about I set out a few buckets?
Good luck everyone.
Meanwhile, a funny: Weather Channel live shot gets mooned
In the shore area of South Jersey, some of the shelters are full. Most people did evacuate.
There are those who have some sort of distorted sense of pride at staying in a dangerous place.
Here, we have rain. The storm is hours away yet.
NYC did the right thing in shutting down the mass transit and airports.
Everyone stay safe and if we all have electricity, we’ll exchange stories tomorrow.
UPDATE: a tree fell on my neighbor’s house. It cut the house in half. Like, literally, in half. I’ll get pictures tomorrow.
A big tree can weigh 10-15-20 tons. Get pictures. If you can send them off to the AP, you might get some money.
Watching coverage of this storm. I did not think that it would reach as far west as Pittsburgh but it is. Just wow.
That’s one hell of a storm.
Stay safe. Stay indoors and hope a tree doesn’t land on you.
Tornadoes in my Dad’s town, headed this way. Wind outside sounds crazy and the little creek in my back yard is roaring like a 747.
