You’d probably never know it, but in a recent Bloomberg poll of public attitudes on candidates and issues, the single most unpopular idea for fixing the budget deficit was to cut Medicaid. People oppose doing that by a 76%-21% margin. People don’t hate the poor. And they don’t want to coddle the rich either. The most popular ideas were to reduce Social Security benefits for high-income earners (64%-32%), repeal the Bush tax cuts for households earning more then $250,000 annually (54%-40%), and to raise the amount of salary subject to Social Security tax (52%-35%). Returning income taxes to the Clinton levels (48%-42%) has the support of the people, too. When it comes to the Supercommittee, people prefer that they focus more on raising taxes on rich people (51%) than on slashing benefits for poor people (35%). So, why don’t these ideas win out?
It’s simple, really. Rich people are powerful people. Rich people have their own cable news channel (Fox News) and they have almost total control of the radio airwaves. They contribute more money to politicians. They band together and hire lobbyists. They own almost all of our newspapers. They fund think tanks and actually pay people to spread their message on the internet. Through conservative organizations and the Republican Party, the rich are pretty much able to get their way, even though many rich people are more than willing to pay their fair share. As a result, income disparity hasn’t been so stark since the Roaring 20’s.
That’s why we need to support the progressive blogosphere. It’s the one place where we can actually compete, and often beat the Republicans at their own game. Yet, as you all have seen since the election of Barack Obama, the progressive blogosphere is not united. Many progressive voices spend as much, or even more time attacking the president and the Democratic Party as they do fighting back against the corporate media and the rightward onslaught of America’s right-wing. The balance is all out of whack.
That’s why I think Booman Tribune serves a valuable niche. We’re willing to criticize the president and the Democrats, often harshly so. But always in the spirit of constructive criticism, and without ever losing sight of who the opponents are and what the alternative is. I know a lot of you value this approach because I read your comments and emails. But, if you’re honest, you’ll admit that there is a shortage of blogs that take this balanced approach to covering American politics from a progressive point of view. Some blogs are more concerned with issues than outcomes. Others are grotesquely unfair, while still others lack any detailed understanding of how our government actually works. You can’t do anything about the fact that progressives are pulling in different directions and diluting their strength, but you can make sure that the voices at this blog remain part of the conversation.
I’ll be honest. We’re hanging on by a thread here, and we’re at real risk of shutting down. So, please consider making a contribution to the Frog Pond. We’d like to keep going.
As always, I am tremendously grateful for your support.
Sent you a little somethin-somethin.
I am sure you spend a lot of time thinking about this, but do you have any ideas for increasing your site revenues that your community could help you with? As you’ve noted, there are a lot of smart people here, with a very diverse set of skills, I’m sure. And I’m sure that, like myself, a lot of people would be willing to donate more than just money.
I’m not a particularly good writer, so I don’t think I’m going to attract anyone here by writing diaries. But I’d be willing to help out in other ways that might align more with what I’m good at.
One thing people can do is share links with their social networks. Another is to pay attention to the advertising and use it when it actually has something you’re interested in. Don’t just click ads. But keep an eye out for petitions you want to sign or products you are planning to buy, and so on. Obviously, writing diaries helps traffic. Free computer programming can be helpful, since it’s always nice to make improvements. You can buy your books through Powell’s. I don’t know. Maybe I don’t have a lot of ideas.
I’m going to be pretty swamped at work until mid-October (we have a conference then), but after that I could help you out with some site enhancements. Feel free to shoot me an email if you’d like to discuss.
Unfortunately all of my experience is in programming and not business, so I don’t really know how to grow your readership or improve your business strategy. But it seems to me that you have a unique product that fills an important niche, and there should be a way to make it work out financially. Maybe someone else here (or that you know IRL) could help you out with that side of things.
I think you spend a bit too much time on the wonkery, and not enough time on fun. People like to also have a good laugh, listen to some interesting music, etc. Try to mix it up a bit. More posts mean more traffic, even if it’s only a Youtube video of a cat chasing a laser-pointer.
Hey, anything that works, right?
I think there is a valid point there. I love the site but it IS awfully serious. Maybe we need a comedian front-pager or more open threads for any craziness we see in the world, I don’t know. Sometimes it all gets so serious that we need to go elsewhere for our comedic relief. No reason we can’t do some of that here.
Here’s a little something for the cause. Thanks for the island of sanity in a crazy world.
Just spit ballin’ here:
What about a subscription-based newsletter of sorts, delivered quarterly with special insights, interviews, etc.
What about a curated list of 5-10 long-form blog posts or articles that you consider “must read” every month for the dem party activist, along with a paragraph summarizing and explaining its significance.
I’d add to that, it would be great to somehow be able to download your curated blog posts/articles to a kindle or ipad. That’s a service of sorts that I would “pay” for or be interested in as a “subscriber” of sorts.
Hey, that’s a great idea!
BooMan, it actually looks pretty easy to get that set up. What do you think?
I’m all for it.
Does that mean “I like the idea and want someone to help me out with it” or “I’m on the muthafucka”?
Probably the former because the site doesn’t support my browser.
I got an error in google chrome the first time, but for some reason I was able to see it when I revisited the page. Don’t know why that would be, as I didn’t change any settings. They recommend Firefox or IE, I’m assuming you’re on Safari. It may just be that you have either cookies or javascript turned off.
I’d be happy to help, but you have to sign up for an account and it requires bank information so they can deposit your share. So I can’t just do it for you.
All right. Do you have my email? We can talk about a few things.
I have two email addresses for you – both gmail. Does it matter which I use? One is your company, the other your name.
use my name.
I would totally prefer reading Booman on my Kindle. I buy many more Kindle books than I do paper books these days. (Baby Alice loves to rip paper.)Sign me up!
There’s a local guy here who has done exactly that with some success with a couple of weekly in-depth state political e-newsletters. Practically everyone I know at the statehouse subscribes. Subscription page with rates here. Boo, you do much better work than Brian, IMHO.
Thanks for the compliment.
I will say that that looks like a lot of work and like a lot of people helped put it together.
Its grown quite a lot since he started the report in 94. My youngest lives next door and is constantly badgering him to move left with his stuff. Pretty funny.
I like the idea of a subscription, even if it doesn’t actually “buy” anything you couldn’t get by not subscribing. (And if it does buy something, so much the better!) I just find it helpful to have in mind an amount to contribute each month or quarter or whatever. One can always give more, of course.
And I agree booman serves an extremely important function. I can’t think of anyone else blogging who’s as clear-eyed, insightful, and progressive without being either in despair or in denial.
One interesting thing that I have noticed (and I don’t have a precise number) is that my contributors skew a bit to the X chromosome. It’s not dramatic. It’s probably 55-60 percent women who are contributing. But the comments skew very heavily to the Y chromosome. And the few diaries we have these days are close to 100% from men.
With so many silent women out there reading the site, I’d just like to encourage more women to actively participate. It’s not like we have a bunch of bullies in the comment threads.
Well I just did my bit to tip the balance toward Y.
As for non-monetary contributions, I can do diaries and share them all over the goddamn place. That’s easy and I threw away most of 2007-2010 doing that for DKos and other points Soapblox.
For some unknown reason I thought my stuff might be too dumb, silly and/or irrelevant for the Pond. Maybe I’ll get the best ones and re-post them here. You’ve been warned.
Also by day I’m a graphic designer and web developer. On my bad days I also do marketing. I’m a mediocre bass player and a good lyricist. Not sure how any of that stuff might help but there it is.
I’m looking to make rent so I’m no help. I set up a kid blog and will confirm paypal tomorrow. Just starting out.
I will write in the diary which I have neglected to do.
Boo, I have uploaded a kid ebook text and pictures to B&N and Kindle. I also uploaded the ebook as a PDF to the blog. If you need any help doing this, I’d be glad to help. I check this site every day. I don’t know if you have my email, but you could use it.
Any other way I can help, I’d be glad to.
Times are really tough now. I talked to a guy as I was out for the morning walk and he is also looking for a little job.
Just made a donation — wish it could have been larger. If my ship ever comes in, the next donation after it arrives will be MASSIVE. Like my respect for your thinking and writing.
Dropped a bit into the bucket. As with everyone else, I wish I could have done more. I should be able to help out a bit more in a while.
I hope the situation isn’t as dire as it sounds. If it is, I hope y’alls quickly find a new platform. Maybe if DK can finally clean up it’s…bwahahahahah!
Couldn’t get it out.
