I was somewhat stunned to realize that David Bowie had covered The Modern Lovers song ‘Pablo Picasso.’ I am certain that this is awesome, however, I haven’t made up my mind on the merits of his version. I like it. I think I like it a lot. But I’m not sure it’s faithful to the essential punk simplicity of the original.
I don’t know. It’s kind of Repo Man meets China Girl. What do you think?
It’s okay. I’ve always been a big fan of David Bowie and it does sort of fit his style. But for some reason it just doesn’t resonate with me. The visuals are pretty good, though.
However, I should say that these things often grow on me over time, so it could be my favorite in a month or two. You never know. It’s like when a new model of a car you’ve always loved comes out and you say “Ewww, no thanks.” Three weeks later, you really like it better than the old one.
Who can say?
I know what you’re saying.
Actually, I know I like it a lot, but it also kind of bothers me in a way because it’s a bit antithetical to what Richman was all about.
Bowie has good taste in many of his covers, including this one. However, I’m pretty faithful to the original, and for that matter that whole first Modern Lovers album is great.
That album is a revelation. I love every moment of it.
seriously? first you ever heard he covered this?
remind me to tell you about the time I hung out with jonathan richman in london a month after 9/11/
yeah, I only figured it out about a week ago. I’ve never heard it on the radio or anything. Yeah, you’ll have to tell me about hanging out with Richman.
