Palestinian anger at U.S. over Israel talks fuels crisis bid for statehood recognition at UN

(Guardian) – Palestinian negotiators have accused Washington of triggering a diplomatic crisis which threatens to wreck the entire peace process. A senior official said U.S. proposals had been the ‘final straw’ that led to the decision to go to the UN to get Palestine recognised as a state.

President Barack Obama has vowed to veto that move and withdraw funding from the Palestinian Authority if Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas carries out his pledge to take his bid to the Security Council.

But Nabil Shaath, a member of the team headed by Mr Abbas that left for New York, said it was a derisory proposal from the U.S. delegation which triggered the move. Mr Shaath told the Guardian he ‘gulped’ when he saw the offer put forward by the U.S. [Israeli] team of David Hale and Dennis Ross.

‘This was the statement supposed to persuade Abu Mazen [Abbas] not to go?’ he said. There was no mention of Israeli settlements, of the future of Jerusalem or of refugees. It also included the demand that the Palestinians recognise Israel as a ‘Jewish state’.

The U.S., he added, was ‘not a neutral observer, but a strategic ally of Israel’.

U.S. Republicans submit resolution supporting Israel’s right to annex West Bank

(Haaretz) – U.S. Representative Joe Walsh (R-IL), introduced on Monday a resolution (with 30 co-sponsors) to support Israel’s right to annex the West Bank in the event that the Palestinian Authority continues to push for vote at the United Nations.

“We’ve got what I consider to be a potential slap in the face coming up with the vote in the UN, which is absolutely outrageous,” Walsh told Politico website last July.

… the House needs to make this statement, if the [Palestinian Authority] continues down this road of trying to get recognition of statehood, the U.S. will not stand for it. And we will respect Israel’s right to annex Judea and Samaria.”

  That’s what it has been all about for the past 45 years. Livni adnitted as much in a Wikileaks revelation, and except for brief hiatus during Rabin’s administration, annexation has continued to drive the Israelis and their settlement expansion. The Palestinian bid for UN recognition may drive a stake in those plans, for which reason it is being fought tooth and nail.
  
  Annexation means that Palestine will no longer exist. But it remains to be seen how Israel expects to pull that off. But we should make no mistake about it. When Netanyahu talked before the Congress mentioning “our ancestral lands,” he was talking about annexation. Looks as if the Congress is responding to that message.

Predident Obama’s promise in last year’s UN speech

(Haaretz) – As President Barack Obama prepares to address the United Nations General Assembly, many recall what he said to the body last year when he devoted over a quarter of his speech to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. One particular phrase drew much attention:

“When we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member
of the United Nations – an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel.”

Obama wasn’t being naive. In last year’s speech he spoke at length about the pessimists’ predictions, the distrust between Israel and the Palestinians, the rejectionists, the risks, the previous failures. “I hear those voices of skepticism”, Obama said. “But I ask you to consider the alternative. If an agreement is not reached, Palestinians will never know the pride and dignity that comes with their own state. Israelis will never know the certainty and security that comes with sovereign and stable neighbors who are committed to coexistence. The hard realities of demography will take hold. More blood will be shed. This Holy Land will remain a symbol of our differences, instead of our common humanity. I refuse to accept that future. And we all have a choice to make…. Words must now be followed by action and I believe that both leaders have the courage to do so”.

Rose Garden Speech on Israel-Palestine Two-State Solution
WASHINGTON DC (The White House) – Israel also has a large stake in the success of a democratic Palestine. Permanent occupation threatens Israel’s identity and democracy. A stable, peaceful Palestinian state is necessary to achieve the security that Israel longs for. So I challenge Israel to take concrete steps to support the emergence of a viable, credible Palestinian state.

As we make progress towards security, Israel forces need to withdraw fully to positions they held prior to September 28, 2000. And consistent with the recommendations of the Mitchell Committee, Israeli settlement activity in the occupied territories must stop.

The Palestinian economy must be allowed to develop. As violence subsides, freedom of movement should be restored, permitting innocent Palestinians to resume work and normal life. Palestinian legislators and officials, humanitarian and international workers, must be allowed to go about the business of building a better future. And Israel should release frozen Palestinian revenues into honest, accountable hands.

Israel urged to reconsider punishing Palestinians over UN campaign

US and European negotiators have urged Israel to refrain from taking punitive measures against Palestinians if they press ahead with their attempt to win recognition of their state at the United Nations.

The Israeli government is considering a range of retaliatory steps, including withholding customs revenues it collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority (PA) under the Oslo accords. Around 400m shekels (£69m) is forwarded to the PA each month.

Obama’s passivity could lead to the loss of a Palestinian partner

(Haaretz) – The photographer Spencer Tunik should have invited Obama to take part in his photograph in the lowest place on earth, since Obama’s speech presented the diplomacy of the (still) strongest power in the world in all its nakedness.

To realize the extent to which the lame-duck candidate has regressed from the positions of the new and promising President Obama, the speech to the United Nations in September 2011 should be compared to one he gave in Cairo in 2009. At that time he pledged to “personally pursue this outcome with all the patience that the task requires,” and said “… it is time for all of us to live up to our responsibilities.” Yesterday he sent the occupied and the occupier, the strong and the weak, to solve the core issues on their own.

In Cairo he recalled, along with Jewish suffering in the Holocaust, the “daily humiliations … that come with the occupation.” And he added: “Let there be no doubt: The situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable.” He even compared the struggle of the Palestinians for freedom to the struggle of black people in the United States for equal rights. On Wednesday, Obama paid pursed lip service to the legitimate aspirations and forgot to mention the occupation.

I worked in the east 50s of Manhattan tonight…about 8 blocks north and 2 blocks west of the UN. Went out on a break to grab a cheap bite to eat. Pizza to go…not too hot so’s I can eat it while I walk. A cop or 2 or 3 on every avenue…looking as fierce and pissed off as only NYC cops can look when they know they are on a bullshit detail.

I walk back to the jazz club, and as I finish my piece of pizza I realize that there are no trash containers on any of the corners!!! I walk an extra block to make sure. Nope. None.

Meanwhile, in front of every restaurant are piles of bagged garbage awaiting pickup.

Hmmmmmm…gotta be some dumb motherfucker terr’ists not to figure out that they could just as easily place their bombs under a three foot mound of garbage as they could drop it in a trash bin.

Ok.

So it goes.

I get in my car after the gig…I found a magic parking spot near the venue…qnd head north towards da Bronx. I use a GPS-based traffic system to tell me where the traffic jams might hinder my way. (Yes, Virginia, at midnight there are still traffic jams in NYC.) But I have no GPS signal whatsoever. Paranoid that I may be…William Burroughs defines a paranoid as “Someone who is in possession of all the facts”…my first guess is that all GPS communications have been blocked on the east side area abutting the UN. If I go west to about 5th Ave. I reason that I will get a signal.

I cross 5th Ave.and suddenly…GPS abounds!!!

Miracle!!!

Like…them dumb al Qaedas cain’t find their asses in a sandstorm let alone navigate the perfectly rational checkerboard of midtown NYC’s avenues and streets.

Please.

No wonder the cops look pissed off.

They know a shuck when they see one.
