The weather was really beautiful here this weekend and the trees are becoming brilliant in their fall color display, so naturally, our village was jammed with the annual influx of leaf-lookers. Fortunately, there are little-used back roads leading to our favorite orchard, far from the traffic jams around town;-)
The colors in the woods have just exploded over the last few days. Even the white oaks have started to turn and they are always the last trees. This is by far the earliest I’ve seen them go. I think peak color is going to be sometime in the next week.
After walking in the woods this morning, I’m revising my peak color guess — now I think it will be this week. The trees that started changing last couple weeks are already getting less vibrant and losing lots of leaves.
Regrettably my region dealt with so much drought that any hope of good fall foliage (and hence good fall photos) is lost. I can only patiently wait, and hope that next year provides more cooperative weather.
We’ve had drought the last three summers (the same pattern — rainy Junes and then almost no rain till Sept/Oct) but for some reason it hasn’t stopped fall color.
I’m thinking I might have to drive about an hour east to see what would normally be out here. So many of our trees here actually turned color in July because of the heat and the lack of rain. Needless to say one can only imagine the impact that has on, say, brush/forest fire danger.
Everything here is just starting turn, and I went for a lovely walk with Finn and my mom yesterday. Looking forward to bike ride in the Poconos this weekend if the weather holds out… 🙂
I think we”re supposed to get rain here midweek and sun again for the weekend, so you should be okay. What day is the race? Do you think you’ll be able to beat your time from the last race?
I’ll have to give Charlotte, our porch spider, credit. No matter how many times human error or weather decimate her web, she just spins a new one. Quite a delight to witness.
Some of the spiders here responded to the summer-like fall we’re having by spinning big webs in the woods — it’s like a little gift of joy every time I see one since I thought I’d seen my last till next year.
CBtE found a job! He has orientation tonight and hopefully starts working right away.
Speaking of work, conference calls at 8:15 should be illegal. Not sure how I’m going to pull this off with people who are looking for breakfast and need to catch a school bus….
I’m up a tad early, or late depending on one’s reference, (too much coffee yesterday) and doing some surfing, posting, and listening to my new Hugh Laurie CD Let Them Talk. I saw the PTV special with him in New Orleans and was inspired to purchase his CD. I’m not disappointed.
Thinking about making a trip to Wall Street… latyer in November?, wondering how many BTers I could meet up with on the way… well, maybe it’s just the third Stella Artois talkin’… time will tell, but I do think this is it… last chance for Democracy here in the republic.
Is it even light out at that time of day? Must be that you guys are living in a more southern latitude. I’m actually north of Olivia. Talk about the GWN.
I like to go out to sit on the front porch about daybreak, until the weather gets too bitter. IIRC, it gets light enough to read the newspaper around 8:00 these days if I squint hard enough.
Too many unfinished projects to get there that early in Nov. It’ll be an extreme long shot getting there at all, I’m suspecting, now that I’m seriously analyzing the possibilities. Sure would be fun to see some more BTers though.
Well I didn’t go walking right after posting that comment — I had to wait awhile the walk (right now there’s enough light for walking around 8:30 a.m.).
ID and I will take you for Brown County’s famous fried biscuits if you show up — that should be a pretty good bribe.
My son is now learning to play that old DK classic “California Über Alles” on the bass. Funny thing about that song – over three decades have passed and somehow that song is still as timely as ever.
Um, I don’t know what DK is either….time for this geezer to go googling I guess. 😉
I can’t believe I’m up already – I pulled a nearly all- nighter for work Thursday night, and still had to work yesterday. I was ready for bed at 9 last night.
I think our leaves are peaking this week. Hopefully the breezy weather today will dry things up enough for some outdoor time with Finny after music circle this morning!
The CBs have abandoned us for their own weekend pursuits.
You might be a little young for the DK era. The band’s history is definitely colorful. Sadly, I was too old for the punk scene, having locked into the blues early on as a favorite and adding bluegrass, folk and later, metal when LZ came on the scene.
My #1 son hung with the Rainbow Family for awhile, so I got a lot of GD exposure when he returned. Always liked St. Stephen. One of those “don’t ask, don’t tell summers;-)
Errata: that was supposed to be “song” in my comment, not “sound”, not that changes anything about my complete lack of knowledge of DK and their songs (except that I was sure it wasn’t Daily Kos).
Our woods are very weird right now — some trees are completely bare, some are very colorful, and a whole bunch of them are still very green, particularly down in the hollows and the steep-sided slopes (I wonder if that has anything to do with getting less light).
No worries – I somehow figured out what you meant. 🙂
One thing that helps me out a great deal is that I have a son who keeps me up to date on the rock front. Now the daughters have made sure I stay up to date on the Jonas Brothers etc.
My bad – DK = Dead Kennedys, a Bay Area hardcore (offshoot of punk) band that was around from about 1978 or 1979ish til 1986. Visual artist Winston Smith was often responsible for at least some portion of their album covers, and the band had some notoriety for including a Robert Mapplethorpe work called “Penis Landscape” (the ensuing government censorship effort and legal battle did the band in). Several singles by the band became punk classics. Their best albums, in my very humble opinion, are still “Plastic Surgery Disasters” (1982) and “Bedtime For Democracy” (1986). The vocalist and lyricist, Jello Biafra, still runs the label that housed the band, and after performing either as a spoken word artist or on one-off projects, is currently fronting a new permanent band (I am blanking on the name). Although I am pretty sure he is still an avowed anarchist, he did once run for Mayor of the city of San Francisco the first time that Diane Feinstein had to face the voters and he managed come in 3rd or 4th place (I’m basing this solely on memory).
As far as individual singles and songs from Dead Kennedys’ day, there are several I still enjoy listening to every now and again:
“California Über Alles”, “Holiday in Cambodia”, “Kill the Poor”, “Bleed for Me”, Chickenshit Conformist”, “Where Do You Draw the Line?”, “Halloween”, “Moon Over Marin”, and “Police Truck” are among the personal faves. They also liked to do covers – “Viva Las Vegas”, “Rawhide”, and “Take This Job and Shove It” were all given the DK treatment at some point during the early 1980s.
The week is stretching out ahead….what do you all have cooking this week?
We had a busy weekend with family and friends, now it’s back to work…
The weather was really beautiful here this weekend and the trees are becoming brilliant in their fall color display, so naturally, our village was jammed with the annual influx of leaf-lookers. The orchard road

I’ve been thinking a trip through the state park might be a good activity for later today.
After walking in the woods this morning, I’m revising my peak color guess — now I think it will be this week. The trees that started changing last couple weeks are already getting less vibrant and losing lots of leaves.
Fall is way too short.
Judging by the way the leaves having been falling, it’s going to be even shorter this year. I think the trees will be bare her by November.
We made it out to the park late this afternoon and the vistas were lovely. Hoping to try some photo stitching for the Fri. Flog if it works out.
I’ll bet it was. Can’t wait to see the pics!
Ours have mostly changed and are already falling in large numbers. There probably won’t be all that much left here by the end of October.
I’m surprised at how quickly ours are turning in the past few days. I would like it to last a little longer…
Regrettably my region dealt with so much drought that any hope of good fall foliage (and hence good fall photos) is lost. I can only patiently wait, and hope that next year provides more cooperative weather.

Just got back from Cape May where it was so warm that we were actually on the beach in bathing suits. And I got a few photos for future paintings too!
I love a late burst of summer weather…even if the water is too cold.
Can’t wait to see the painting subjects!
There won’t be too many more days like this. I’m hoping that this weather stays until my 5k next week.
I think we”re supposed to get rain here midweek and sun again for the weekend, so you should be okay. What day is the race? Do you think you’ll be able to beat your time from the last race?
It’s to benefit the local heritage hiking/biking trail. I hope that I can beat my last time, it wasn’t all that great. 😉
I’ll have to give Charlotte, our porch spider, credit. No matter how many times human error or weather decimate her web, she just spins a new one. Quite a delight to witness.

From all this testosterone. Ugh.
Time to get preggers again and have a daughter!
(Why yes, I do have a rotten sense of humor. Why do you ask?)
I had the same thought, but discretion being the better part of valor, decided to keep silent until someone else broached the subject;-)
A spa day or pedicure or Rhinebeck sheep and Wool festival might be an easier and simpler cure… 😉
Cure or not, the sheep and wool festival sounds like it would a great time.
Nice view of a dog looking down a road in the middle of the forest.

Another Thursday begins. I never could get the hang of Thursdays (as Arthur Dent might have said).
Just keep your towel close by and all will be well.
Tomorrow is Friday Foto Flogging and the theme is “O” for October: Anything connected in any way
with the letter O and/or the month of October.
My birthday was earlier this month but I hope that there are no photos of me included in FFF. Not the nude ones anway… 😀
Where has the week gone?
Somehow I am asking the same question. Too many things happened at once. Will be even more swamped next week.
It’s just as well. This week just plain sucked.
See and share your “O is for October” pictures by clicking here for the diary.
Andi, Andi, wake up!
ha ha.

Hi NDD! If you stop here on the way, you could catch a twofer, since Andi, Jim & I live just a few minutes from one another.
She is probably out in the hardwood forest with the pack at this hour gathering more of those ethereal, sunbeam streaked photos she is famous for;-)
Is it even light out at that time of day? Must be that you guys are living in a more southern latitude. I’m actually north of Olivia. Talk about the GWN.

Hi NDD – When in November?
I’m planning a long weekend to NYC, first weekend of November. Hope to see some #OWS action then.
Too many unfinished projects to get there that early in Nov. It’ll be an extreme long shot getting there at all, I’m suspecting, now that I’m seriously analyzing the possibilities. Sure would be fun to see some more BTers though.
That’s too bad – it would have been great fun to meet in person. Hope the trip works out anyway, let the old freak flag fly.
Hey, did you see the timestamp on the comment right about your — I’ve been up for hours and have been on the walk as predicted by ID.
If you do the trip, I hope you will plan on a stop to visit with me, Jim, and ID.
Nope, wasn’t paying any attention to time stamps. But you must have one of the headband flashlights to see where you’re going;)
I’m sure craving a road trip even if the NYC one proves to be a stretch.
Nice shrooms by the way!
Well I didn’t go walking right after posting that comment — I had to wait awhile the walk (right now there’s enough light for walking around 8:30 a.m.).
ID and I will take you for Brown County’s famous fried biscuits if you show up — that should be a pretty good bribe.
That’s a promise, NDD;-)
Fried biscuits eh? Is there an emoticon for drooling? Hah! Sounds pretty good to me.
Okay then — when should we expect you?
P.S. If you do actually come, you are invited to share our futon with the dogs and the mass of their hair decorating it.
: – P ”’
(Emoticon for drooling).
Hope everyone’s doing well this weekend! Horrendous weather here in New York today — set to continue for the next week.
How is that Hugh Laurie CD? One of my work acquaintances seemed to dig on it, but I’d love a second opinion before I put that one on the wish list.
I caught a Hugh Laurie set on video recently. Imvho, he sings like an actor. Very dramatic. Me, I tend to like my vocals a little cooler.
My son is now learning to play that old DK classic “California Über Alles” on the bass. Funny thing about that song – over three decades have passed and somehow that song is still as timely as ever.
Showing my age (dinosaur-vintage), I had never heard of that sound and had no idea what DK referred to.
Google … saving the old and out of it from the embarrassment of their ignorance since 1998.
Um, I don’t know what DK is either….time for this geezer to go googling I guess. 😉

I was a GD and bluegrass person, maybe that’s part of it.

Fantastic. Good for him!
He’s been using a borrowed bass. Apparently he has shown enough persistence at it to where I have committed myself to buying him one for Xmas.
I tried bass for a while in the early ’80s — but I have no persistence.
I might suggest starting with a low-end bass at first. No need to spend big bucks right now. IIRC I bought mine at a pawn shop & it served.
.. nowadays I’d do craigslist.
Just make sure the neck is straight & in one piece.
That’s pretty much my standards for dating too. The neck must be straight and in one piece.
That should narrow the field somewhat ..
Back from my 5k. I was able to pace myself and run the entire thing. Woohoo!
Congrats! It seems like a great day for a run.
A bit chilly when we started out but it got warmer later on.
Congratulations, b2!
Thanks ww! It was over in Goshen to benefit the Heritage Trail.
Glad you had better weather than we did. Here it just sucked all day.
Gosh, that reminds me – I need to work on my slacker training a bit this weekend;-)
Slacker Guru FM could likely help if he comes around.
Many congrats!
Thanks DD!
Great going! (figuratively and literally)
Good early morning, and thanks! I’m hoping to get something today to post in FFF, if I can.
