The Alabama immigration law may currently have the support of 80% of Alabamans, but it isn’t going to stay that way. It’s one of the stupidest damn laws ever enacted and it’s going to create an opening for Democrats because tons of ordinary white folks are going to be inconvenienced. The law says that people have to provide proof of citizenship every time they have some transaction with the state.
“One afternoon, we sat down and we had the county directory and we went through and made a list of every county department that interfaces directly with citizens,” said Julian Butler, the attorney for Madison County, which includes the City of Huntsville.
Some already required some form of identification, Mr. Butler said, but many did not. He and his colleagues are still discussing whether people can rent a pavilion at a county park, enroll children in a Little League team or sign up for a membership at the county swimming pool without first proving that they are citizens or legal residents. Paying property taxes might require a trip to the courthouse with documentation. Architects, nurses, hair stylists, plumbers, real estate agents and a host of other professions will have to demonstrate their legal status every time their licenses are renewed.
“There are a lot of frustrated citizens that are being inconvenienced by the implementation of the law and who didn’t think it was going to impact them,” said State Senator Paul Sanford, the only Republican senator to vote against the law and the author of two bills that would amend it.
Many of the utility companies are barred from turning on the water or electricity unless the homeowner/renter can provide proof of citizenship. Can’t find your birth certificate? Go buy some bottled water and flashlight batteries.
A whole lot of yahoos are going to have second thoughts about this law. “Hey, this was supposed to get rid of the beaners, not force me to make three trips to the DMV!”
The Law of Unintended Consequences?
Ignorance of the Law of Unintended Consequences is no excuse!
My mother is something of a troglodyte around issues of race and the immigration of brown-skinned people. The irony is that she herself is an immigrant, having been born in a small town in Canada in 1924 that did not then issue birth certificates.
Well, my mom now lives in rural Georgia, and imagine her surprise and disgust when, in order to renew her drivers license, this 87-year-old woman had to make multiple long trips to the DMV and dig up her citizenship papers from 1948 to comply with Georgia’s idiotic (but less sweeping than Alabama’s) new law. So now she thinks the whole thing is really stupid, because she had no idea it would be enforced against white people.
I assured her that that certainly wasn’t what the bill’s sponsors had in mind…
In Ga. all you need is a photo ID (drivers lic.) and you can apply for a gun license. The Ga. law does require that you must be a citizen but, you do not have to present proof.
She had moved from another state (Tennessee) and they wouldn’t take the TN drivers license as proof of citizenship. She subsequently got a passport for the first time in her life, specifically to avoid such ordeals in the future.
If I was a state employee I’d be sorely tempted to say “Papers, please” in a German accent.
A lot of them are going to be surprised that their Alabama driver’s license is not proof of citizenship.
Requiring ID, per se, is not a bad idea because you don’t want someone pretending to be you dealing with the state. But citizenship? Except for voting, what right does the state (small s) have to demand that you be a citizen? This will be struck down eventually.
Yeah, heaven forbid someone using an alias when signing up their kid for a summer t-ball program.
I hope this law is vigorously and rigorously enforced against ‘crackers’. Serves ’em right.
They are already suffering. My daughter (Democrat and Liberal) lives in Alabama (Why? I ask her. Why?). She says that food prices are going up (going up in IL too) and the state’s agriculture is devastated. All the Hispanics left and there is no one to work on the farms and no one to do the hard manual labor like cleaning up the Tornado debris.
Hey, stupid crackers wanted them to leave. Be careful what you wish for.
Someone should start keeping a list of states that could flip in 2012 because Republicans elected in 2010 carried out their agenda.
I doubt Alabama’s electoral votes will go to Obama, but I could see a CD or two flipping—as well as seats at the State House.
Ohio’s definitely on the list, along with Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona. Any others?
Well, it’s not a flip but the governors of Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are doing the GOP nominee no favors.
Ha.
Ha ha.
Ha ha ha ha ha.
Ah-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Snerk.
🙂
ha ha ha
no better for them
There are consequences for embracing puerile racial and ethnic hatred. I have a hard time feeling any sympathy for those who voted for that nonsense.
