For my previous post on this topic go here.
My daughter has been very ill since last weekend so we took her to the doctor on Monday, and told them of the information from her school that a case of whooping cough had been diagnosed earlier in June. I received the call yesterday afternoon from the nurse at my daughter’s pediatrician’s office: the test she had on Monday administered by her doctor showed she had pertussis (a/k/a whooping cough) and not some rhinovirus or the common cold.
My daughter had her last pertussis booster shot in 2006, so we thought we were in the clear, but obviously the new vaccine developed in 1997 (which doesn’t use the whole cell of the pertussis bacterium to make) is less effective than the prior vaccine and the immunity it provides wanes more quickly. So now everyone in our family is on antibiotics since we have all been exposed to the pertussis bacteria as a result of our constant contact with her.
Do yourself a favor. There is a pertussis epidemic spreading throughout the US this year. It hit Washington State first and hardest, but it has spread to many other states, including the Mountain West, the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast. If you have cold symptoms, please check to see if there has been any reported pertussis cases in your state and community.
Even if you have had your TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria and acelluar Pertussis) vaccine booster within the past ten years, you may still get this illness. It can be life-threatening to infants, the elderly, people with diabetes and people with compromised immune systems. Plus, if undiagnosed within the first 2-3 weeks, the antibiotics used to fight a pertussis infection will be ineffective. This is because the severe cough (which can last for months) only comes after the pertussis bacteria has died and released toxins into your lungs.
The weeks to months-long cough is a by-product of the toxins and adults have had such severe coughing spells that they succumb to exhaustion, and on occasion even break ribs. The outbreak is spreading quickly this year, in part due to the less effective acelluar pertussis vaccine (which is synthesized from only some of the protein antigens of the pertussis bacteria), and in part because many people, especially adults are not up to date with their vaccinations. Don’t risk losing your summer to this illness, and don’t place the more vulnerable members of our society at risk, for though you may catch a mild case, you can spread the disease to others who may then pass it on to someone — a child, or other person at risk — for whom this illness could have life altering effects.
If your last booster shot was more than five years ago, get another one. And if you get cold like symptoms (congestion, sore throat or cough) check with your doctor to see if a test for pertussis is recommended. If my daughter’s high school had not informed us that there had been a case diagnosed at her school we would have never known to check for this disease. We would never have considered that we might be at risk of contracting a disease for which we were vaccinated as children. Yet my daughter did, and I also came down with cold-like symptoms from being around her. And I had my booster shot a week before she became sick.
She was deathly ill – unable to sleep, coughing, sore throat — and not a happy camper. My symptoms were not as severe as hers (no cough thankfully), so perhaps the booster shot I had the week before she became ill provided some immunity, but I feel much safer now knowing that my family is receiving the proper treatment so our exposure to this bacterial illness will not result in a more severe condition. I also feel good that we will soon no longer be potential carriers of this disease.
Finny got his TDaP yesterday. He was grumpy all day. The nurse stabbed him good. A little while ago his mother how his leg felt and he said, “It bit me.”
I hope your daughter feels better soon. It really is a miserable sickness.
She and the rest of us started antibiotics last night. She seems better already.
I don’t know if you remember this, but the CBs and I all had pertussis about 5 years ago. None of the doctors we saw recognized it; it was only when I realized why we had this cough that lasted forever and listened to audio of someone whooping that our family doctor knew what it was. And it went unreported.
It’s an awful disease. Glad you identified it early enough to treat it.
Glad our state and local government officials were on their toes. People complain about NY having too much government but clearly in this case it may have saved our family from a far worse outcome.
Thank you for the warning. I’ll call my doctor’s office on Monday to check our vaccination status.
Working in the Microbiology laugh, I’m pretty sure we’ve known about the limits of the previous Pertussis vaacine prior to all the recent outbreaks. I’m pretty sure as far back as 2002 when I went into Med Tech school, I had to get a booster. And I had to get my vaccinations up to date when I visited India 2 years ago and so I’m at least current on TDAP.
It’s only recently I think with the increase of parents deciding not to vaccinate their children that pertussis has been on the rise. It’s def why you are seeing more commercials and hearing more radio adverts telling people to get vaccinated if not their children, then get vaccinated themselves so they don’t pass on Bordetella to an unvaccinated infant or child.
I hope everything goes well with the antibiotic regimement for your daughter.
Damn…Microbiology LAB not “laugh” I really need to start proofreading…lol
I thought it was an inside joke. Ha. ha.
The main reason you were probaley feeling better than your daughter is the B. pert is kinda the opposite of Varicella virus (chicken pox). Having chicken pox as a child is not necessarily life threatening, but having chicken pox as an adult can be very bad. Bpert is the opposite. It’s way more dangerous in children than in adults. It’s the reason why all the advert always say to make sure you and your family and anyone in contact with your infant is vaccinated against Bpert.
Case in point, my friend just had twins Friday. While the twins are in the NICU, then you can go to see them, because there is a partition between you and them, but when the twins come home, she told us all that we could come to her home to see the twins, but only if you have your TDAP up to date as a precaution for the newborns.
Steven D…I am truly sorry for the suffering of you and your daughter…
My wife was crippled in bed for 5 years until she read a book by John Sarno…
Please Google John Sarno, and buy one of his books…
If you are open-minded, it will change your life…and potentially the life of everyone you know…
Well… I’d be personally pretty skeptical of this… but it sounds pretty interesting.
Then again I’ve been doing the Primal Diet to varying degrees off and on the past couple of years. So I’m definitely not going to be judgemental toward any alternative treatments that others find effective for themselves.
Sadly doing google searches for the Primal Diet won’t generally turn up the right thing since there’s a lot of confusion about this term and this is often confused with the Paleo Diet and the Primal Blueprint. “So here’s a link if you’re interested in more details.
But the core of this diet is the consumption of raw and unprocessed food, primarily meat (chicken still weirds me out) and raw fat in the form of butter or cheese for me usually.

I will put your daughter on my prayer list. May she get well soon
Hope you all feel better very fast.
IIRC when I went for a physical in January and they updated my tetanus vaccine, my doctors said it also now included vaccine for whooping cough which was pretty rampant here over the winter.
Perhaps something people should ask their doctor about.
I’m on notice that I have to get a tdap booster before watching my grand daughter full time next month.
So sorry you are going through this. I do hope that you and your family recover quickly.
There are cases in my youngest son’s school as well so we all had to go get our booster shot.
