Former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted tonight of 45 counts related to child sexual abuse. Meanwhile, someone in the Catholic Church was finally convicted for aiding and abetting pedophilia when a Philadelphia jury ruled against Monsignor William Lynn.
Too late is better than never, I guess.
Too late is definitely better than never. Aside from the punitive aspect in these cases, raising awareness of how damaging these kind of crimes are to the victims may help in prevention in the future, especially in cases like the Sandusky one where there were witnesses and a cover up.
Maybe instead of patting each other on the back and doing a victory dance on the steps of the courthouse, these folks should spend some time reflecting on how our “system” could have possibly let this kind of thing go one for years before actually getting around to doing anything about it. This is only the beginning of finding out who knew what and who tried to cover it up, lest we tarnish the image of such a fine sports program. Yes, better late than not at all but still rather pathetic.
