Paul Ryan still opposes abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health or life of the mother. Mitt Romney isn’t willing to go that far, but he has supported a personhood amendment to the Constitution that would effectively make Ryan’s position the inalterable law of the land. Here’s what you need to know about abortion rights. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, John Roberts, and Antonin Scalia think Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood were wrongly decided and would overturn those cases. That would return the issue of abortion rights to the states, dozens of which are ready to ban the medical practice.
There are five Justices who would vote to uphold Roe and Casey: Elena Kagan, Anthony Kennedy, Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Stephen Breyer.
Justice Ginsburg has only pledged to serve three more years. She’s survived two battles with cancer, she’s 81 years-old, and she recently fell and broke some ribs. If she cannot serve four more years, and Romney names her replacement, Roe and Casey will be overturned.
People probably think this outcome is unthinkable, but the modern Republican Party is a radical party. Look at Paul Ryan.
What are the odds that some wingnut with a gun will pursue a Second Amendment solution to overturning Roe v Wade if Romney wins the White House?
Pretty low because Romney will appoint whomever the Tea Party demands.
Oh yeah, Roe will be done if Mitt wins and gets to replace one of the Centrists.
They’ll definitely give that decision to the states.
The SCOTUS will give a lot back to the states.
EXCEPT gun control!
Any existing state or city laws will be overturned, and they’ll have to follow the law that’s already been on the books for well over 200 years – the 2nd Amendment.
So, what will be national, and what will belong to the individual states, will be looked-upon on a case by case basis.
Besides suffering from an ‘irony deficiency,’ Conservatives suffer from an almost complete lack of consistency.
The only consistency they have at all, is their one most core belief: “Anything and everything to piss-off the Liberals!!!”
Everything else, is subject to change.
Looks like Akin is about to withdraw after all – did they offer him a carrot or did they shove the stick all the way up there?
I stand corrected – he essentially pulled out his junk, put it on the podium, and told everyone who wants him to withdraw from the Senate race to suck it.
We’ll see how that works out for him…
I’ve got to respect him for that. Nothing else, mind you, but for the defiance of his overlords, yeah.
Ryan cosponsored the “personhood amendment” that would force the law to pretend a zygote is a person with as many rights as anyone else. The implications are staggering: could a microscopic glob of cells sue the mother for insufficient nutrition, or even make criminal charges for gross neglect? If a bigger glob expires, do its lawyers have a right to demand an autopsy? Must women submit used tampons to the “authorities” to make sure there’s no dead person in there, since somewhere between 20 and 50 percent fertilized cells never make it to the first step in the journey? Can such cells be posthumously charged with suicide?
Absurd? Of course. But no more than the proposed Ryan Law itself. You think the worst thing a RyanRomney White House would do is return power to the states? Not even close. More like 12th century Russia. Killing Roe v Wade is merely the overture.
