BooMan is currently surviving a train delay, and I am here at home with a teething (molars!) Finny and a keyless car…so here’s an open thread.
Anyone see any interesting news stories about something other than the debate? Please post it with a link in the comments!
Does my grumpy bear miss me?
Boo – commuting in the spirit of Joe Biden! you should take a look at the Wilmington Amtrak station too. It’s tiny. Everyone who worked there during those years knew Joe Biden
He actually is using the Wilmington station. Easier to get to than Philly. 🙂
wonderful! I used that station often when visiting my mother.
Twilight of the Age of Aquarius?
What lousy day all around for a retiree. Waking up baffled, I read some blogs, looked at some talking heads. Then for inspiration watched the last half of Ali vs. Frasier 1974, the original rope-a-dope.
Thank FSM, some of us know (better than I do) what we’re doing.
Sorry you can’t convince the little one that things can get better, teeth can be a problem forever. Is he the grumpy bear, or is that you?
Is that what I’ve got to look forward to?
Well, the Turkey/Syria situation is getting trather testy. http://news.yahoo.com/turkey-strikes-back-syria-mortar-kills-five-010028577.html
I am sure this was also on Obama’s mind last night during the debates.
So other news plus the debate wrapped together.
Turkish parliament authorized the use of Turkish military inside Syria today.
Turkey is a NATO member and we are as obligated to assist them in their defense as they were obligated to assist us in ours in 2001. Article V cuts both ways.
Erdogan insists it’s precautionary and gestural…
She can’t compromise with the Russians in the Security Council and aspires same scenario as overthrow of Gadhafi in Libya. Medvedev, Putin and Lavrov made it clear that won’t happen in Syria and have threatened Turkey and Western powers not to invade, set up a no-fly zone or a human corridor for refugees. Remember the Assad regime, they accepted more than 3 million Iraqi refugees within their cities when war criminal Bush pushed through the Iraq invasion, destruction and occupation.
Just about the same hour as a Syrian mortar shell landed in the border town of Akçakale (500 yards off target of FSA controlled border crossing), in Aleppo four suicide car bombs exploded killing 50 and wounding more than 120 Syrians. The poreous borders with Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan permits Sunni jihadists (Al-Qaeda) free entry with arms and explosives. The so-called uprising has gone beyond a sectarian civil strife into a full fledged regional war thanks to Turkey, UK, France, Germany, U.S., Libya, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The UN Security Council refused to come together for consultation on a Russian draft resolution concerning multiple terror attacks in Aleppo.
More info and border maps in my diary – Turkey Bombs Syria 2nd Day – Troops May Cross Border
BTW – NATO met yesterday within the framework of Article 4 of the Washington Treaty.
You should remember the real victim here, Davis: the Assad regime.
Miguel Cabrera won baseball’s first triple crown in 45 years!
Not since Yaz did it two years before I was born. Too cool.
Yep, and his numbers are actually very similar to Yaz (except he had quite a few more RBI, a situational stat):
Cabrera: .330 / 44 / 139
Yastremski: .326 / 44 / 121
I, too, am dating myself here: http://masscommons.wordpress.com/2012/10/04/congratulation-to-miguel-cabrera/
Congrats to Miguel Cabrera! By the way, every Triple Crown winner before him is in the Hall of Fame.
From the article:
Cabrera was lucky. The hoopla got to George Brett when he was batting .400, and he tailed off late in the season.
He’s also dealing with the rising number of fans who embrace sabermetric statistics and place less value on traditional stats. Had he done this 20 years ago, there’s no way anyone else this year would have a chance in hell at winning the MVP. Now, it’s probably going to go to Mike Trout.
What? The Baseball Writers of America might choose the 2nd generation MLBer/white guy over the Venezuelan?
Shocked I am.
I still remember what the veteran receptionist at my workplace told me when Navy Son, not quite two, was having sleeping problems. Betty was an ancient soul, wise beyond her years. She said, “Don’t worry, it gets better. Then it gets worse. Then it gets better.”
Post-Debate Campaigning

Report: Obama Hauls In Record $150 Million In September http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/report-obama-hauls-in-record-150-million-in via @igorbobic
He’s gonna need it just to keep correcting the record if Romney keeps up the shape-shifter routine.
New newletter out Science Matters from the FDA.
For anyone with a more wonkish bent, you might check this “Advice To The Next President” series. (I’ve had a small hand in it.)

(They could use some good commenters, too.)
according to Romney spokesman John Sunnunnu, Obama “lost” because he is obviously “lazy & detached.
also from the mouth of Sunnunnu, don’t expect Obama to prepare for the next debate because he “When you’re not that bright you can’t get better prepared,”
