What are you doing this weekend? I want to see this new Ben Affleck film.

This is fun:
Laundry…
Samesies.
O/T since it was last night, but I saw the Led Zeppelin movie Celebration Day in the theater. Rock on!
Not Geezers. Holy crap.
A Halloween dance party for thirty seventh graders. Wish me luck.
Like every weekend, playing Ultimate.
Whoa, another ultimate player? Do you play club? College? League?
I played 9 years of club, but have been (mostly) retired since 2010.
I’ve played club on a few teams from the Baltimore area. At the Master’s level, Charm and B.U.M. At the Grandmaster’s level, Rigor More Disc. I’m in Sacramento now and since there’s no close Grandmasters team (I’m 44), no club for me. Now I play a couple of times week league and pick up.
No retiring for me. They’re going to have to pry the disc out of my cold, dead hands.
What club teams did you play on?
Started out on sectionals-level club open teams. Played some with Big Ass Truck, but never all the way through to the fall series. My last year I played mixed on Overhaul, we finished 5th at Nationals. That was the best finish of any team I played on. Unfortunately, I was injured for a big part of the year, but I did get to play a little at Natties.
I may get back into it eventually, but right now I’ve moved on to other sports – earlier this year I played in my first ‘official’ racquetball tournament, the Michigan State Championships. Didn’t do so well, but also didn’t feel completely outgunned.
All of my friends still play ultimate, so I still go out and throw pretty often. If there was a competitive masters team in my area (I’m 34), I’d consider playing on that, but that scene kind of fell apart last year. If Real Huck was still around, I’d probably be playing with them.
Played ultimate in the early 80s. Our team lost the finals in the national championship in ’84. 🙁
Impressive. What was the team name?
Not as impressive as it sounds.
I omitted to mention that this was back in Norway (long-time users know I am from there). There were probably less than two dozen teams playing in the country. A bunch of us played in college, this was a couple of years later and we got together again and entered on a whim.
Hey, I don’t think I knew you played ultimate! If I did, I forgot. Sweet!
I may have mentioned it once a few years back, so no wonder you missed it.
I played as well, rec level only. Think I’ve mentioned it here, but it was probably years ago.
Well, Boo, since you asked—
Planting some more green onions for the winter garden (we go through a lot);
working on my posters for the next APS meeting;
trying to get a Doobie Brothers riff down on the old axe (been sweating on this for a looooong time);
reading Wolf Hall (it’s great so far!);
maybe adding a few more yard signs to the collection if I can hunt some down
trying to avoid checking Nate SIlvers blog every 20 min
Haven’t been to a movie in, uh, years I think (since the kids were little). Let us know if the Affleck one is any good.
picking up and reconfiguring the mbp after replacing the logic board and hard drive…ugh…many $$$…nvidia chip took a dive and took out the logic board and who knows what trashed the hd. at least apple picked up the lions share of the tab.
1st major problem l’ve had in 20 years ± of using macs.
Ouch.
Grandson’s birthday party at a kiddie pizza joint, the sacrifices we make for the little ones.
Saturday though will get out early and hike at a nearby state park named Government Canyon, the weather has cooled a slight bit so I am looking forward to that.
Riding my horses…
Hanging out with my wife…
Also, sad that my time in the frog pond is coming to an end in 18 days, one way or another…
Working at the local volunteer fire dept. outdoor fish fry and dodging all the tourists who’re looking at the scenery instead of where they’re going. Its peak fall leaf color weekend.
Gonna catch up on some reading this weekend. Starting tonight…yeah, I’m that boring on a Friday night…lol! But hey I love to read…sue me…LOL
No surprise then that this was one of my favorite shows on TV when I was young…lol

OT, an interesting chart. Should be plotted against the state probabilities in Nate Silver’s model. Just to see the exceptions.
State Unemployment Rate: Current Rate and Max for 2007 Recession
New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut aren’t doing too great in recovery.
Autocrossing in San Diego on Saturday, Rallycrossing (autocross in the dirt) in Los Angeles on Sunday…

That looks like fun!
We’re also going to see Argo, with a friend, on Sunday. The views have been very good.
Working as usual
Delurking to recommend an excellent documentary, “Searching for Sugarman”.
Heard also from someone else it is good. Wondering if I can stop working long enough to see it or Argo
Wish I was going to see that move (Argo) but will probably be with mom as her 14 year old dog is probably in his final weekend. Argh.
Lemme see…considering Friday as part of said weekend…???
OK…
Rehearsing in Friday for a gig on Saturday with a jazz sextet that is playing a concert on Saturday in Jersey City. Music inspired by the jazz masters of the ’50s, ’60s + ’70s. ‘Trane, Diz, Bird, Milt Jackson, the whole Blue Note/Atlantic stable. We still haven’t surpassed these people…still trying to equal them, truth be known.
Then on to a Yale Club gig in Manhattan playing the music of the Swing Era and the early ’50s-’60s for a pack of clumsy white Yale graduates and their mostly insignificant others. Good band, good bread, dumb motherfucking audience. So it goes. This university produces preznits and CIA guys? No fucking wonder we are in trouble!!!
Saturday…working on composing some large ensemble music that attempts to deconstruct the Great American Songbook. Stay tuned. Then the Jersey City gig. Should be fun.
Sunday…out to the Stroudsburg/Delaware Water Gap PA area for a concert with a large ensemble at the Zoot Sims Jazz Festival. The ZootFest. Dunno who Zoot Sims was? Your loss. A great NYC jazz tenor saxophone player. There is a whole semi-expatriate contingent of NYC jazz musicians who have settled in and around the Delaware Water Gap area over the last 50 years or so in an attempt to live a more sane life than the one that is offered by this devolved economic imperialist culture to its real musical creators. So it goes.
Barack O’Bomber?
Mitt Zombnie?
Whadda buncha maroons!!!
Some foolish radio hustler once asked Charlie Parker about his religious affiliation. He answered “I am a devout musician.”
Like dat.
Someone also once asked Zoot Sims h he played so well when he was drunk. His answer? “Practice drunk.”
Like dat as well.
The equally great alto player Gene Quill was in the hospital with some kind of serious health problem sometime in the late ’50s/early ’60s. Zoot Sims called him up and said “Gene? Gene!!! This is Zoot. Are you OK?”
Gene’s answer?
“Zoot who?”
Think on it.
Then Zoot asked him, “Gene…is there anything I can do?”
And Gene answered…at the point of death…”Take my place.”
They don’t make ’em like that anymore.
But we do keep trying.
Bet on it.
Meanwhile…the fix takes its course.
Bet on that as well.
Watch.
Later…

Public Image Ltd last night. The rest will be spent admiring my son’s Lego creations and finding the great pumpkin.
Bridge on Saturday. Afterwards the boys and my grandson are coming for dinner. I’m making paella.
I just went and got my hair cut at my very busy neighborhood Latino barber/beauty shop. I really like going there because it’s so lively, even though everyone’s speaking Spanish. I can only understand what they’re talking about in general. I just sit there and take it all in. They would speak English if I wanted to join in but that wouldn’t be as much fun. It’s kinda cool, like I’m on vacation somewhere in Latin America but I’m right here in my own neighborhood.
I’m glad to report that they were all very excited about the election and “Obama” kept coming up over and over. The place is decked out in “Estamos Unidos” (we are united) Obama campaign stuff, too. I gathered that there might have been a couple people working with OFA in there waiting to get their hair cut as well. Early voting started today and they’re talking about that. Someone said “Miiitt Romney” in some context at one point and the place broke into laughter.
Just an anecdote. The polling I’ve seen of Nevada shows really high Latino support for Obama, so no surprise there.
In honor of which, here’s a link to one of my fave’s from 2008!!

I remember those well.
That “Miiit Romney” thing is hilarious. I love hearing people make fun of him in different accents.
