This time of year, with the short days, can be kind of depressing regardless of what is going on in the world, but I’m finding it hard to take the combination of evil stupidity we’re being subjected to. When the response to 20 schoolchildren being butchered with a semiautomatic rifle is for people to run out and buy up all the available ammunition in the country and most of the guns, I basically feel like I’m living in a Funhouse full of sociopaths. The Republicans’ position on guns is merely an accurate reflection of that Funhouse.
I’m still mourning the Jersey Shore I have known all my life, and the Republicans won’t even vote for disaster relief. It’s unbelievable.
We’re about to throw two million people off of unemployment insurance in the middle of winter because the Republicans won’t lift a finger to help them or make a single concession or compromise on anything, despite getting drubbed in the last election.
I need cheering up.
At least the Giants are still in the playoff hunt!
BE the 8.3%.
I have the perfect cure: bundle up the Finny and head out for a family hike on the River Trail. Being outdoors where the world is bigger than its problems is sure to cure anything that ails you. 🙂

Great advice, CG. Works for me EVERY TIME!! There is no catharsis like nature. Greatest therapy there us to put things in the proper perspective.
smart woman…
listen to her
Base of the base. They are very very well trained little consumers.
Listen to Cabin Girl – she’s right.
The GOP have figured out you can’t shoot a corpse. Any given election can only be lost once.
The next one is a home game — low off-year turnout, the six-year itch, a disparity in Senate seats being defended….
Throw in a recession and it’s at least 2010 all over again. The GOP have a better shot at a Senate majority than they had in 2012, and their House majority is locked-in until the next census.
Where’s their incentive to deal? What’s the downside to intransigence? There’s no king to create 300 Liberal Lords and break the logjam.
The Tories went to the country in the last UK general election and said “We promise to do things that will make the nation worse off, and that you know will make the nation worse off, because most of you are old enough to remember when we were last in power, and it’s exactly what we did then. But, hey, we’re not Labour. Vote for us.”
Which enough people did to put them in power. And they’re doing what they promised.
The scorpion always stings the frog. It just does.
Yes, but you have to remember something. The Lib-Dems showed they’re a bunch of fools. And people were tired of Blair and Brown. And there wasn’t a left alternative in the U.K., like here.
The Left alternative here is…?
Basically it is helpless bitching.
Rage against the dying of the light…
Write a poem. I’m working on one about Camden NJ.
My new Newfie puppy has learned how to climb up on the bed and as she is an early morning person, she feels it her responsibility to pounce on me starting at 4:30. What once was a ball of black fluff is now 42# of ACTION. I have to say, she’s a great offset with her determination to get me outside to the ugliness we are being subjected to.
That’s one thing I really miss since losing our old dog earlier this year. She knew when it was the weekend. And at 5:30 A.M. on Saturday she was ready to hit the woods, weather be damned. And “NO” was not an option.
Agree with Cabin Girl’s advice. As far as Our Democracy goes, Eyes on the Prize!! it’s a process and we’re doing good! of course the cornered beast is fighting back.
Have you ever read Dom Helder Camera’s The Spiral of Violence? Here’s a link

I feel you man. I’ve been down in the dumps for weeks.
THEY – THE GOP- ARE SOCIOPATHS.
just accept it and proceed. they’re fucking sociopaths.
Obama is our president.
Romney is not our president.
We kept the senate.
Gay people in maine are getting married today.
Attitudes about guns are changing in the aftermath of recent horrors.
You are happier with the new job you have this year.
You make a difference every day, through this blog.
You are surrounded by beauty where you live.
You have a delightful child and a wonderful family.
You are healthy.
That’s a great starting place for dealing with all the things that need to change.
Peace, Booman
Sociopaths
Sociopaths don’t feel rage. These people aren’t sociopaths, they’re just evil.
Get outside, see the great outdoors, or the mediocre outdoors, depending on what’s available. And when the sun goes down, go see a movie.
I think sociopaths would be better than evil.
There there, you don’t have a raging cold like I do (on my birthday no less) so you’re ahead of the game there.
But politically, it’s simply because our country was designed by and for the non-noble (ignoble?) upper class by the non-noble upper class with pure rhetoric to make it work then the system, unlike all other reasonable countries, set in stone.
Take the next week off away from any source of information. It’s not worth commenting on until it’s an event. We are in total unpredictable world at the moment.
Or take some time to read up on the #idlenomore movement. There’s a spot of hope in a bleak news scene.
And buy enough milk now. Or decide to forego it for a month or two.
The amount of absolute Republican malice is accelerating to the point that pretty soon even Republican rank-and-file will notice.
Here’s the bad news:
Here’s the encouragement:

Verbum sapienti.
Perhaps it will cheer you up to recall that David Brooks will be teaching a course on “humility” at Yale in the upcoming spring semester.
I wonder if some enterprising student(s) will be taking hidden cell phone video footage and posting highlights out on the webs somewhere.
