Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett just turned down the Medicaid expansion and assured that he will only serve one term in office. He was already less popular than pubic ‘crab’ lice. Now he’s gone and committed the cardinal sin for a Republican in Pennsylvania. This ain’t Oklahoma, son. This is a moderate state. You want to win statewide? Think Tom Ridge or Arlen Specter. That Santorum clown snuck in, but he got what was coming to him.
Sayonara, Corbett. Maybe Jesus won’t notice that you kicked the poor.
I would say that Democrats need a candidate they’ll really get behind (not what happened to Onorato in 2010), and they’ll need to do some serious GOTV. I know Corbett’s not popular, but PA has a very long history of giving governors two terms, and people need to treat this race like they did with Santorum in 2006 – run hard and absolutely embarrass the GOP come Election Day.
Who’s the candidate most Democrats think will end up winning? I feel like it’d be a good run for either of the former suburban reps (Murphy or Sestak), although they’ve both been out of office a while and have federal, not state, experience.
“Long history” is Milton Shapp was the first to serve 2 terms from 1971-79. More interesting is that each party has alternated the governor seat after 8 years for about the last 70 years.
If Corbett is gone after 4, it’s because he sucks out loud.
Well, he does suck out loud.
I still think Rob McCord is the man to beat. He’s going into his second term as treasurer, so he has the inside information, he can garner a lot of on the ground support in southeast Pa., and he has a ton of money. It’s a tough combination.
Isn’t the mystery of why he dragged his feet about Penn St being looked into?
Yes, Kane just took office like two weeks ago. She has appointed a special prosecutor(or what ever the term is).
I just read on the TPM comments that ppl think he’s trying to help Jerry Sandusky. is there some there there?
I’m sure there is. Is it something that can land Corbett in trouble with the law? I don’t know. But he obviously slow walked it so it didn’t disrupt his run for Governor.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
No. wait! It gets worse . . .
“The tricky timing in this case has nothing to do with the content of Corbett’s statement but the fact that he was congratulated loudly for it by a strongly conservative special-interest group 20 minutes before he made the decision.
“This is the political equivalent of a wardrobe malfunction. It provided immediate opportunity for those who would argue that the state is making the wrong decision to show that Corbett’s move was made with the foreknowledge – and approval – of special interests opposed to “Obamacare.”
” ‘Americans for Prosperity “is encouraged by reports that Governor Corbett is announcing today that Pennsylvania will not set up a state or state-federal exchange, but let the federal government’s department of Health and Human Advertisement Services shoulder the costs of setting up the exchange.'”

So, yeah, it’s been nice knowin’ ya, “Tom Corbett — Space Cadet.”
(Some of you older readers will no doubt get the reference.)
I don’t know. Christie isn’t setting up an exchange either and I don’t think that will hurt him one bit in even more left leaning NJ
Christie starts out with more popularity. also, NJ republicans are a different population – wealthy suburbanites, wall st types, young wall st types
