Ok, the University of North Carolina did not call a rape victim “little missy.” They did, however, compare rape to a football game, and not in a way that blames the rapist for, you know, raping the victim:
“She told me rape is like football, and if you look back on the game what would you have done differently in that situation?” said Annie Clark, describing a school administrator’s response to her sexual assault. Clark said she “absolutely” felt like she was being blamed for the crime against her.
Another student of the university, Andrea Pino, told CNN that school officials accused her of laziness after she reported lasting trauma from being raped.
Yes, because all rape victims could have done something differently to prevent being raped, and anyone who doesn’t “move on” from the life altering trauma of rape is such a pathetic, lazy-ass loser. Oh, and by the way, the good University also believes that if you file a complaint that you were raped by a fellow student, well that constitutes grounds for expulsion.
One of the other students who filed the complaint, Landen Gambill, faced the threat of expulsion by the university’s Honor Court because of it. Her alleged rapist and ex-boyfriend claimed to be “intimidated” by the complaint, even though he was not named.
Gambill filed her own lawsuit against the university on Monday.
The CNN report can be seen here:
I’m sad to say I was born in North Carolina. Thank god I’m not an alum of UNC, because I would be ashamed at having to tell people where I obtained my college degree if I were. One question for the administrators of the University of North Carolina who obviously believe they have no accountability for their contemptuous treatment of rape victims : Have you no sense of decency, people? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
Was this the school where the Lacrosse team got out of the rape charges?
Close.
That was Duke University. The two are in the same general area, but Dookies look down on Tarheels.
Missed it by thaaaaaaaaat much! </MaxSmart>
Tarheels look down on the dookies, you mean, as dookies are a bunch of rich idiots. As a tarheel, the only good thing in dookieland is Bullock’s BBQ. Also Dook Chapel does the Messiah, which is cool.
That was Duke, UNC’s archrival.
Seems they agree on some things.
I have 2 degrees from UNC – and yes, this is a sad/embarrassing day.
Sadly, UNC has Republicans too (I’m hoping that’s the reason for this crap – not that it would make it better).
Another UNC grad here, although luckily I can say I never gave them any money afterward.
If nothing else, the band-aid is getting ripped off the whole thing. I have friends who work with the county rape crisis center in Chapel Hill, and the university’s lousy/nonexistent response to sexual assault issues has been a thorn in their side for years.
UNC-Chapel Hill is in a bit of a leadership vacuum at the moment. A big name football coach they hired several years ago brought down NCAA penalties on the school that uncovered a grading scandal in the African-American Studies department. Those led the Chancellor to resign after firing the coach and the head of the African-American Studies department. The Republican legislature is going to be reducing state funding of the university system again (cutting spending to be able to cut taxes on the rich). And now this. There has been a substantial failure of leadership and accountability by the administration and a failure of the legislature to insulate the school from the pressures of sports fans.
The bigger issue is not regional or geographical. And that is the toleration of campus rape by university officials throughout the country. The excuse is “not wanting to ruin a young man’s life”. And that was trotted out by the student-run honors council at UNC. There is a national problem as well with BMOC-impunity on campuses that translates to the sense of entitlement often seen by CEOs.
Agreed.
Yale and Princeton have already been investigated.

You know if it is a problem at Ivy schools it is likely a problem all over the country.
