If you’re being sarcastic or not but why is that such a terrible idea on first principles? I understand the parents would find it distressing but it has to be the lesser of evils than having a second, third or fourth such incident because we can’t find the resolve to remedy the causes.
Similarly, if we insulate our sensibilities from, say, collateral damage of drone attacks are we well served? Our media can debate policy incessantly but things like the Wikileaks video of Iraqis getting shot up grounds the discussion. Not always necessary, but probably healthy when we seem to be drifting off from reality.
As I posted earlier I had a good look at the image over at Gawker and I really don’t understand the fuss about publishing it.
Of all the commentary and opinion presented on this incident I found the image of that unfortunate dead teenager the most compelling. It is what the cops and coroners deal with all the time; the grounded reality of the consequences of somebody’s action. It didn’t change my opinion but it deflated my outrage and reminded me that some human behaviour, largely based in fear, as manifested by Zimmerman but also many other less culpable actors, is often dangerous and potentially tragic though completely unnecessary. It is a sad picture.
The gun lobby, the demagogues of the Right, the media and the popular culture which both mythologises and demonises the stereotypes which feed this fear have much to answer for. Where is that account settled? Certainly not in a courtroom in Florida.
.
The Florida v. George Zimmerman trial cannot be compared to the O.J. Simpson case in reverse. Zimmerman did kill Trayvon Martin, the jury has all the judicial evidence and will decide self defense or not. If the latter, the jury will decide on murder charge in 2nd degree or manslaughter. Even by an acquittal, George Zimmerman will face civil procedure for financial compensation by the parents. The legal experts go for an acquittal, I will gamble on the manslaughter conviction.
Every time I hear or see George Zimmerman, he is making up most of the story. I find him not credible, nor the original accounts written down by police investigators during the night after the shooting. Their modus operandi was clearly based on the Florida principle: “Stand your ground” and they did poor detective work.
Much of the defense is contingent on this mental image of the scary black man. This image blows that narrative right out the window. Everyone should be made to see it, to deal with the reality of the tragedy just like Emmett Till’s mother insisted on. It makes no difference whether or not they got Martin’s family’s permission, white America needs to face the music.
I fail to see why this shouldn’t be posted; it speaks for itself.
Reminds me of the equally horrifying Emmett Till death photo.
You’re right, where are the pictures of the Newtown victims?

Those people who wanted a more recent photo of Trayvon got their wish.
No child deserves to die; especially not like this.
Doesn’t look like a kid who could sit on top of a 210 pound man, and pound his head into the concrete, does it?
So, so awful. But if all the deaths from gun violence were displayed in this way things would change really fast.

I guess this REALLY IS what it’s about. More clicks to this blog at any cost.
And unrealistic. Gawker has cornered the clicks and their management has already responded to your accusation, basically saying it is a wash for them.
That picture is the only testimony Trayvon can give in this case.
What a baby.
