The administration is not going to give the Republicans anything in return for either funding the government or paying its debts. I guess some people can be forgiven for thinking that 2011 is a good predictor for 2013, but that was a complete miscalculation.
The president has absolutely no incentive whatsoever to give an inch, and plenty of incentive to force the Republicans to eat their porridge.
Meanwhile, someone just opened fire on the west front of the Capitol Building.
The administration is not going to give the Republicans anything in return for either funding the government or paying its debts.
You better be right!!
you crack me up, Calvin.
Why? We know that the President has wanted a “grand bargain” since Day 1. He just repeated that fact two weeks ago to Snuffleupagus. So it doesn’t hurt to remind him that a “grand bargain” is unacceptable.
What a dumb thing to say.
What is? Care to refute it?
Here is some more for you:
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-bottom-line.html
You’re not paying attention, Calvin, and you’re not actually thinking, just doing word-association. Can’t see the forest for the trees. Context. Levels of discourse, all that sort of thing.
(and the YOUNGER you are the more this is gonna hurt you, so really listen up)
“Grand Bargain” is dog whistle-speak for chained CPI for social security.
You used to be able to go to the movies for 10 cents – now it’s 10 bucks, right? This is called inflation – i-n-f-l-a-t-i-o-n – still with me? If Obama gets his way, social security benefits – already not a living wage in most areas – will be worth about as much as your grandfather’s dime before you guys grow up and hang up your obam-poms.
Jeffl, why did you rate this post as “Warning”? Because you didn’t like what “obsessed” said? I see nothing personal or troll-like or discourteous or even angry in this post. It’s an opinion. An opinion, I’ll admit that I agree with, but I’ve never down rated “warning” to an opinion that I don’t like. The proper thing is to either ignore it or post a rebuttal. I don’t want to see this blog devolve into a purity police like Dkos and I’m sure Booman doesn’t either or he would have banned me long ago.
Maybe he accidentally blue-barred the wrong choice? I’ve almost done it myself, now and then; fortunately I’ve always caught it before hitting “Rate All”. But if one makes a habit of waiting till the end of the comments to click “Rate All” after rating several comments, so as not to lose the red “new” tag in mid-read, I can see how such a goof could slip through.
I’ve done it myself and it can be corrected. I’d hoped that was the case.
Huh> I just rated this “Good” – a 3 – then once the page reloaded I tried to change it back to “none”, but it didn’t take. So maybe once you’ve rated a comment you can’t unrate it? Gonna try uprating it to 4, see if that works.
Okay, when I changed the “Good” to “Excellent” it did upshift from 3 to 4.
I’m going to see if I can change it back to 3.
Okay, yes, that did downshift to 3. So one can change ratings with a value, but not go back to none.
Wingnut assassination attempt on disloyal republicans?
Afro-American woman with young child in the car was stopped at a Secret Service checkpoint on Pennsylvania Ave near the White House. For unknown reason, she continued her way on Pennsylvania Ave, closed for traffic. The car drove towards the Capitol building and was stopped by gunfire from police. Suspect woman most likely killed, the child was removed from the car, a toddler about 2 to 3 years old.
Unbelievable panic followed on Capitol Hill as everything went in shut-down due to (police) gunfire outside the Hart Building. Whole episode with woman and car lasted about 3 minutes. In any other location, the apprehension would have been a minor incident, on Pennsylvania Avenue, any mistake will have lethal consequences. Wall to wall media coverage … LIVE! Poor child, just lost her mother. Rest in peace.
where is the information saying it was an Afro-American woman?
I’m just getting home and trying to piece together the whole story
The child removed from the car was African American.
.
After reading the AP story, well I loathe cops but I’m going to wait for more information before I start condemning capital police (who are likely under a lot of stress as they are working for free today).
Check out the video and photo of the woman in her car surrounded by four cop vehicles and five cops with guns drawn, and she manages to drive away. Maybe if the cops relied less on their guns and more on their brains, they would do a better job and not end up shooting so many people.
Well I saw the Al Hurra video, were those the shots that eventually killed her?
The video is from the encounter at the Capitol. Not when she was shot and killed close to the SCOTUS building.
.
Police bullets and AR-15 toting security officials stop another US citizen suffering from mental illness.
From my diary @BooMan.
Unless it’s a distraught federal employee. Or probly both.
That’ll larn ’em.
In this country, every citizen has a constitutional right to shoot at the federal gubmint. It says it right there in the Second Amendment.
I don’t think they’re shootin at Democrats, though. Democrats ain’t doing nothing. They can’t.
Here’s hoping you’re right…or at least close enough.
As an aside, this looks like one of the fringe benefits of having a president who, as a young man, received and absorbed the basics of doing a power analysis and thinking strategically about a campaign.
Yeah, all that and at least three more things.
He is not facing another election.
He wants to actually get some stuff done during his second term. (Enough of this crap.)
And finally, he wants to save our political system, because if you give in to this kind of hostage-taking (from a very small minority really), hello fascism.
No face saving gesture, no fig leaf. Just standing firm on principle. A game changer.
Jelly fission? Jellyfish invasion leads to Swedish nuclear reactor shutdown
But that’s just an inconvenience of a large and real problem:
It’s always been a source of black humor to me that as we learn more about climate change, it appears none of the cute likeable organisms benefit, only the vermin like jellyfish and insects.
Yes, you never see a headline indicating that there is a crazy surge in the cute puppy population, do you?
In our area this year, it is the stink bug population that is at unprecedented levels.
Jellyfish are not vermin!!!!!!
(I like jellyfish. They’re beautiful. And yeah I’ve been stung.)
🙂
Ok, they said the woman was unarmed.
I see some reports saying she got out of the car? Anyone else seeing that?
My first question? Why was she trying to drive the car through the barricade pillars at the White House?
My next question? When she couldn’t get through and the Capitol Police pulled their guns, from the video she appeared to reverse as the Capitol officer was reaching for the door handle and she drove off.
All this with her child in the car!!! WTF is going on?
Damn. The Cap Police betta have some answers.
Also too, they are saying that the woman was African American? Where are they reporting that from? Are people assuming that because of the image from the video of the child?
Ok, I may just have to move back to Texas so I can vote for Senator Wendy R. Davis if she’s truly running for Governor of Texas! GO WENDY GO!!
http://feministing.com/2013/10/03/watch-live-wendy-davis-to-announce-run-for-texas-governor/
It’s fascinating to watch this transpire.
Just a theory here, but I’m starting to wonder if these last few years what has really been going on in Washington is that much of the GOP leadership has simply been playing for the base. Now that I write that it seems obvious, sure, but perhaps we didn’t quite get the true extent of it. Sure, in public they gave lip service to the debt hysteria and birtherism and creationism and all that, but in private they complain to their Democratic colleagues about what a pain the tea party is and ask their understanding if not forgiveness.
This would explain why the Dems have appeared to be such milquetoasts in their reaction to GOP craziness. I’ve often wondered if, despite all the nasty stuff that is actually said to the press, that the leadership of the two kind of games things out in advance to appease both of their bases.
Only now, in 2013, the tea party has gained such numbers that they are actually causing real disruption. Sure, most GOP Senators and congresspersons aren’t real tea baggers – they just play them on TV – but enough of them are real tea baggers that they can cause real disruption.
They tipping point was when the tea baggers have enough votes – a minority of the majority – to prevent House bills to pass without violating the Hassert rule. Then throw in having Lee and now Cruz in the Senate and the beast can no longer be controlled.
So now the traditional GOP congresspeople actually don’t want to be in this standoff, but can’t back out of it because they know they’ll be primaried and probably lose. But they can’t bitch about the tea party publicly for the same reason.
So, maybe they go to the people who they are secretly friendly with, the Democrats, and ask them to let the tea party have it.
Just a theory. Continuing to watch for additional evidence either way.
I choose to believe something of this sort, merely because it’s preferable to the idea that the leaders of one of our major parties are simply insane.
