I miss seeing fox out my picture window here at the farm. There numbers were decimated by mange, then the coyotes moved into their niche. After a couple of decades the foxes are still very rare.
This handsome fellow was just sittin’ on the fence waiting for some hapless doves to show up at the feeder for a quick bite.
Mrs. X loves to feed the birds but this isn’t quite what she had in mind.
So (s)he’s waiting at the fly through window. The hawks (red-tailed or red-shouldered, I can’t tell) do that at our feeder occasionally. I think ours would like an order of squirrel on the side too.
We were having a good crop until the snows came. It will be interesting to see if they come back once the ground thaws and temps dip low enough again (which looks like it might be Monday).

well, I’ll be performing work for the CIA and be traveling to Pakistan.
It’s all hush-hush so I can’t be more specific.
Bought a ticket today for a flight tomorrow,

You’ve really been busy, no? How could we refuse such a delightful froggy pond mistress? Anyway, boran2 and I amused ourselves by getting the comments to the two century mark – a new record for the pond, I believe. Hope you, the CBs, and big & little BooMen all have a wonderful holiday!
I got honey today from the bee keeper whose bees live at the farm over the summer. The honey harvest was once again below his usual average.
And I always ask if he lost any. He said that the last few years he brings 2000 up from Texas in the spring, and in the fall only has 1200 left to take to the almond orchards for the winter.
I forget how long he’s been doing this, 20 years I’m guessing, but I asked what about back when he stared. He said five percent loss was normal then.
This is the third spring with zero frogs “bridgetting” in the spring. I used to have stereo, as then there were two or more locations. Now there none.
I saw one frog in the yard this season while mowing. One. Every round I made I had to guide him to safety under the front deck, until I was far enough away.
I saw two Monarch butterflies, I think MsNDD saw one or two. And I have plenty of milkweed plants available for them.
Fooking Mon sant to and all their G_D_ chemicals. I’ve more adjectives for them, but they don’t fit to this venue. Fill in your own.
I give a silent little cheer every time I see a honeybee working the flowers around the yard. Not many here, either. I don’t remember seeing any Monarchs last summer – lots of Black Swallowtails on the milkweed, though. The larvae seem to favor the Fennel we planted several years ago. Maybe they like licorice;-)
That was a a lot of water yesterday. We had over 5 inches in a 36 hour period. I wouldn’t be surprised if 46 into Columbus is closed in the next day of two.
The only radio traffic I heard last night was that a large tree had fallen across 46 West near the former Ski World property. The fire dept. went out to get it cleared away. No reports of high water there. The new Salt Creek Trail, on the other hand, is now the new Salt Creek Kayaking Channel.
We went over to Cincinnati to have Christmas with my brother’s family. I get email notification once an hour from the NWS whenever the river at Columbus goes over flood stage. So I’m watching theses emails as we are spending a nice day with the family, but when it hit the point where I could see they were going to close the road down to two lanes, we took off for home. We got through about 20 minutes before the DOT closed down the highway completely.
Our winter landscape (and your photo) reminded me..:

Funny, I still have my Holling Clancy Holling collection and am in the process of passing them on to my 8 yo grandson. IIRC, my parents bought them for me when I was about that age, early 50s. I was a dreamy kid and was enamored of the Paddle to the Sea story. My brother and I loved playing in the creeks and sent lots of little homemade boats on similar journies.
Just noticed this on a local FB news site. Hibernation would be a good option about now, I’m thinking.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT: A significant WINTER STORM is possible Sunday, January 5, 2014. Snow is expected to begin Saturday night and become heavy at times in some areas by Sunday. There are still some difference between weather models on the exact snow amounts, however most indicate a possible half foot of snow with heavier amounts possible in some areas by late Sunday. The snow will diminish Sunday evening and bitter cold air will spread across the region by Monday. The combination of temperatures as low as 15 below and strong winds may produce wind chills of 30-35 below next Monday and Tuesday. Watch TIBC for further weather updates.
[…] Blowing and drifting snow through the night. Snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches. Total snow accumulation 1 to 3 inches. Lows 5 to 10 below.
Very windy. Northwest winds around 25 mph increasing to around 35 mph after midnight. Gusts up to 50 mph.

I was told Dec set records for cold, which matches my lifetime memories of below zero days in Dec.
I hate it when our forecast is worse than yours. 🙁
Sunday
Snow with areas of blowing snow. Temperature rising to near 30 by noon, then falling to around 23 during the remainder of the day. Light and variable wind becoming north 13 to 18 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible.
Sunday Night
Snow likely with areas of blowing snow before 1am, then areas of blowing snow and scattered snow after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around -13. Wind chill values as low as -27. Blustery, with a west northwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Brrr. Guess I won’t complain about our -10 temps and -35 wind chill … oh wait, yes I will because I’m not a hardy North Dakotan who’s used to be frozen.
The high in town so far is a balmy -6F. My old firehouse gang went out for a home generator fire about an hour ago. The damage was minimal, but the generator is out now. It broke an oil line. Thankful they weren’t out very long.
Whit/Family Man called last night to see how everybody was doing. He was in the hospital for awhile but is okay now and had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas with his family.

Predictions for -10F overnight, then up to 41F during the day tomorrow, and then for tomorrow night,”A 40 percent chance of light snow after midnight. Areas of blowing and drifting snow after midnight. Lows 20 to 25. Windy. Northwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to around 50 mph.”
I think I’ll spend tomorrow evening at home on the internets.
highest I saw was 37F today, but still quite a spread. But then there’s this prediction for tomorrow;

Now I may have lived through some summer thunder storms approaching 65 mph, but never, ever, in the winter time do I recall 65 mph. (And I’ve been around for several decadences, as some of you no doubt are aware;)
A friend told me earlier this evening that Montana had already clocked 60 mph. So far this evening we’ve “only” had gusts to 39 mph, a mere Zephyr relative to what we may get tomorrow.
Good thing I’m protected by a shelterbelt of trees on my west and north, otherwise I’d have to tie a rope around my ankle whenever I’d set foot out the door.

Old ‘Truthful’ Tom tells us it because of such conditions in 1870’s his great grand father noticed that the crows flew so far south they evolved into Antarctic penguins to escape the heat. And who wouldn’t believe OTT ? ;-D
We will hurry it on its way just as speedily as possible. Not looking forward to the repeat performance here. I have a sad week ahead, with 3 funerals to attend. I will probably forgo the graveside part of the services.
I have found that as one ages, the ratio of funerals to weddings that one attends swings in a troubling direction. 2013 was illustrative in that regard. Hopefully 2014 will change that pattern.
I tempered today’s funeral with a later outing for dinner with Mrs. ID, #1 son & wife and 3 of their 4 kids, then after, the 10 yo granddaughter interviewed me for a school project. I’m to show up at school for the presentation on Valentine’s Day. Should be fun.
I just hope you didn’t make one of those terrible gaffes* that’ll bring your political career to an end.
* trying to figure out what that would be in Brown County — maybe you heard saying that Ma Ferguson and Granny Barnes were having an affair and that’s okay with you.
Ha! My 4th grade teacher had a same sex partner, so I was introduced to that concept pretty early. Much more dangerous would be a revelation concerning who the boys were that moved someone’s outdoor potty back a few feet at Halloween back in the early 60s, causing the inebriated resident of the home to tumble into a nasty situation in the wee hours of the morning.
A forty degree shift here from near 50 yesterday to around 10 now. Mother Nature is smacking us around pretty good this winter. You’re getting some wild swings out there too, aren’t you?
Yep, it’s been a yoyo-ing bi-polar vortex of both temps and wind speed the last several weeks.
Fortunately I’ve had nothing more to do with the outdoors lately than to carry out the ash from the wood stove and the seeds and shells from our squash freezing project. Almost done with the latter. However, I’m afeared the former will continue on for a while yet.
New cafe.
Is that guy up top a visitor to the cabin?
He is inspired by a fox I saw yesterday walking in the woods below the house. That fox was far too far away to photograph.
Here’s one that didn’t mind getting close to me at all (in New Hampshire; around here they are very shy).
I miss seeing fox out my picture window here at the farm. There numbers were decimated by mange, then the coyotes moved into their niche. After a couple of decades the foxes are still very rare.

It’s ice paper. Very cool.
How about you set up a slow motion camera so I can see how those are done;)
I would love to put a video camera out to see them come into existence. I have no idea how fast/slow they grow.
AndiF,
I was bragging on you about your frosty flowers a few days ago.
Happy New Year to you & Jim.
Great to hear from you!
Hope all is well with you and your family and that you have a great new year.
There’s a flog on Friday with a theme of “Random”. Wishing lots to see you there.
P.S. If you want some more frost flowers, here’s a LINK to my album of frost flowers. The first 7 are new ones from this year.

Looks like a depression leading to a hump.
Aren’t we all just a little depressed in winter?
Are there depressed humps too?
All manner of depressed humps around here due to extensive glacial runoff a couple of years back.
Indianadem,
Not here we aren`t.
It was in the 90`s last week & pushing 80 today.
We could use some rain though.
Got any extra.
Happy New Year
Got about 5″ of rain here not too long ago. Wish I could send a couple of inches your way. Good to see you here. Happy 2014 back to ya!
It’s just to show you how easy the humps are to get over. 🙂
I am over my work humps for the next 2 weeks…am I still allowed in the cafe after my slovenly ways this fall?

Apparently we are getting floods for Christmas. Lots of roads here are under several feet of water.
That was a a lot of water yesterday. We had over 5 inches in a 36 hour period. I wouldn’t be surprised if 46 into Columbus is closed in the next day of two.
I misread the NWS hydrology page. I don’t think 46 will be in any trouble.
The only radio traffic I heard last night was that a large tree had fallen across 46 West near the former Ski World property. The fire dept. went out to get it cleared away. No reports of high water there. The new Salt Creek Trail, on the other hand, is now the new Salt Creek Kayaking Channel.

It is predicted to be almost 70 degrees today on this, the second day of winter. Maybe winter isn’t so bad after all.

Yikes. Still 50s now but headed back to the 40s later on.

He was glad that he liked the country undecorated, hard, and stripped of its finery. He had got down to the bare bones of it, and they were fine and strong and simple.”

I love that book. It was, in fact, the first book I bought with my own money (and I still have it, over a half-century later).

That’s a lovely photo — it could be the cover for a Gene Stratton-Porter book.
A treasure done by my grandfather who was quite the amateur photographer. He had a darkroom in the basement and developed all of his own stuff.
I love this picture. I’ve seen this scene with a few dozen kids instead of two at Bradford Woods.

I like the play of vertical trees versus horizontal shadows.
The big snowstorm has already started although the worst of it won’t be here until tonight. Stay safe froggies.
It only dumped about 4 – 5″ here and has pretty well moved on. Hope its not saving the worst for you.
We’re now getting 8-10 inches. This has been a brutal winter already.
Just noticed this on a local FB news site. Hibernation would be a good option about now, I’m thinking.

We got about 6-7 inches here. Fun digging out the car and a path for Finny to get to it in all this cold.

Stay warm and safe if you must go out.
Thanks Bob!

EVEN COLDER TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR MONDAY AND EARLY TUESDAY WITH WIND CHILLS AS LOW AS 30 TO 40 BELOW.
This is, however, probably a normal spring day for NDD. Any warm up tips from the frozen tundra, NDD?
-30 to -40 is what we’ve been having!
(By the way, -40 is where C and F are the same.)
Sharing is caring! 😀
Ack! That’s pretty awful. Stay warm up there.
Oh, that sounds brutal! Stay warm, everyone!
The car thermometer showed 1 degree this morning. Thankfully, it is going up to the 20s today. Break out the margaritas and beach umbrellas.
Use plenty of sunscreen, b2.
And now the freezing rain, for a change of pace.
We had that Friday.
Now today: -20 °F
Windchill: -51 °F
Wind: 25 mph from the NW
Wind Gust: 31 mph
Top that you frozen (hopefully hibernating) froggies!
That’s some serious chilly you’ve got there. If I should ever stop in to visit, it’ll be more like July.

I also read Real Climate http://www.realclimate.org/
Keep in mind that Australia has about the same land mass as US can you find us a cool spot…..Please
Like they say down here ” it’s so hot the lizards are carrying water bags”
“The ants are wearing boots ( so they don’t burn their feet) and sun hats ( skin cancer/ sun stroke) “.
Of course yo know that Koalas rarely drink water they get their moisture from the leaves they eat.
But recently they’ve been seen ordering cold beers at the local bar!
Old ‘Truthful’ Tom tells us it because of such conditions in 1870’s his great grand father noticed that the crows flew so far south they evolved into Antarctic penguins to escape the heat.
And who wouldn’t believe OTT ? ;-D
33 degrees and snowing here in the Hudson Valley. Sigh.
:::brushes aside the cafe crickets::: Awaiting the return of the polar vortex, now scheduled for Tuesday. Slightly less cold though.
My conclusion? Death Be Not Proud.
Now that’s what I call a filthy secret. 😉

Kind of a yin/yang thing. I like those drops on the ice.
Love this!!!
Back to the deep freeze my niece has nicknamed the Bi-Polar Express.
“Bi-Polar Express” ha ha that’s a good one!
A forty degree shift here from near 50 yesterday to around 10 now. Mother Nature is smacking us around pretty good this winter. You’re getting some wild swings out there too, aren’t you?
Smacked even harder — it’s -1 here right now.

Someone loves the camera.
Someone loves standing on logs. That making a great pose for photos is just a side benefit that accrues to me. 🙂
