Fox News host Megyn Kelly made news when she insisted that Jesus and Santa Claus are white, which is a silly thing to say for a variety of reasons. What she actually said was “I mean, Jesus was a white man, too. He was a historical figure, that’s a verifiable fact. As is Santa—I just want the kids watching to know that.” Of course, Santa Claus is a fictional character who is based on an early Greek Christian bishop who lived in what is now part of Turkey. We can speculate about his appearance, but he probably looked more like Abdullah Gül than the guy that you see riding a sleigh led by reindeer during Christmastime. Is Abdullah Gül white?
I don’t know, but he’s probably not any whiter than Jesus of Nazareth was. Most likely, Jesus looked like most of the people who live in the Middle East today. Do most of the people in the Middle East today look white?
I don’t know, because standards change. All I can say with reasonable certainty is that Jesus and St. Nicholas probably did not look like they were Chinese.
However, there is at least one strong reason to believe that Santa Claus is white.

Actually there is some debate on whether Arabs should be considered white I’d imagine the same would apply to semites in general. Greeks are generally considered white, are they not?

I get a kick out of the fact that Jesus probably looked way more like Yasser Arafat than the nordic depictions we typically see. And I say this with utterly no animosity toward the man who was Jesus. What’s wrong with looking Semitic? From what I can tell, his teachings were amazing. That people completely misunderstand and misuse what he said, creating a cult of personality in place of his teachings, is not at all his fault.
What’s amazing to me is that Kelly wanted kids to know Santa is white. Did anyone tell Kelly that Santa is not real? How old is she? 4? You can make him look like whatever you imagine.
The definition of race is a purely social construct, since human appearances are a spectrum. If we accept this, then it’s obvious that Jesus – and Santa – are and have always been white. They’re white because “we” want them to be white. QED.

I’m not getting this ruckus at all. Megan was simply letting everyone know that all the good guys are white. So is the Easter Bunny. White is superior in all things, all people, all religions, etc.
If you prefer black, you can have Satan and his evil twin Obama.

The conspiracy of news shows to perpetuate the parental conspiracy of Santa Claus. There are some things that media does not touch in American society. The mythology that drives the retail frenzy is one of them. And the defensive way this comes out at the end of what was an otherwise planned “irritate the liberals” moment is very interesting in a Freudian slip sort of way.

When I was growing up (in SE Mo) it was understood that White meant Nordic/English/Irish/French. No one else. Not the Poles, not the Czechs, CERTAINLY not the Italians. Spanish were not even thought close enough to discuss, and nobody knew where Portugal was. As to non-Europeans? Seriously???

You can blame the Roman and Greek Empires for all this – races were never more thoroughly mixed than they were in the polyglot empire days – you had German and British Roman mercenaries mixing with Eastern Europeans, Nubians, and Arabs, Greeks establishing military and trading colonies as far away as the western coast of India and the eastern coast of Africa, Roman Italians all over the Middle East, and Roman military retirees (who usually married local girls) in colonia all over Europe and Britain.
