I wonder which oligarch “got” to Newt Gingrich and convinced him that his bread was better-buttered if he denied climate change than if he appeared in commercials on the issue with Nancy Pelosi.
Rarely have we been gifted with a more stark example of a politician showing that he’s been “bought.”
I’m sure Newt came cheap.
I’ve often said that I’m not at all surprised that our politicians can be bought.
What surprises me, is how cheaply they can be bought.
could be. there are those Tiffany bills to think about
Some years back, when Santorum was still a senator, I recall he made an effort to prevent weather reporting to the public by the National Weather Service, apparently because he’d gotten $5000 from some private weather forecasting service. Only $5K to destroy an invaluable public service! I thought then, and think now even more, that we should just start a bunch of Kickstarters to buy our representatives back. At $5k each, it would take about one afternoon on the web.
LOL!
Well, it certainly wouldn’t surprise if Newt Turdrich had been actually paid off to now parrot climate denialism, monetary corruption is a load-carrying beam in the architecture of the “conservative” movement.
But remember that Newt really had no practical choice but to de-evolve to denialism if he wanted any imbecile “conservatives” to read his stupid tweet barrages—his whole party, movement and elected officials are now virtually 100% climate denialists, it’s now the litmus test of “conservatism”. When Newt sat with Nancy on the climate couch, McOld (as the GOoP’s prez candidate) was even willing to “accept” the science. Those days are long gone.
With an informed electorate, the “conservative” movement’s braindead denialism and overt seething hatred of the environment would doom them at the polls. Instead, blithe environmental destruction is one of their backbone positions and costs them nothing, as far as I can tell. Environmental degradation and looming ecosystem collapse on a mass scale seems a dead issue to Americans. Everything else comes first.
When you worship money, and consider wealth to be the same as virtue, selling out is the ultimate in principled behavior, because it’s rooted in the ultimate principle.
You got this all wrong.
They don’t worship money. They worship Mammon.
Money is just the physical evidence of Mammon’s blessing.
He found out that the Earth has cancer, and he’s been having an affair with Mars.
FTW!
