Mainsailset asked a very pertinent question in a comment on Booman’s Memorial Day post Another One Bites the Dust.
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em. The default reaction so pure in its reflex it doesn’t even need a question or a jury to set itself in motion.
Who are we that we have allowed the NRA to flourish and the victims to lay lifeless?
I started a reply that grew into a stand-alone post.
We need a Memorabilia Day.
Read on for more.
Who are we that we have allowed the NRA to flourish and the victims to lay lifeless?
Who are we?
You almost answer your own question in the first sentence, mainsailset.
My version of your post:
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em. The default reaction so pure in its reflex it doesn’t even need congressional approval to set itself in motion.
This violent domestic society is merely an extension of 50+ years of violent foreign policy.
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em.
America’s answer to all its problems.
It’s right there in the news for all to see.
It’s in the entertainment media.
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em.
Now at your local theater, on your television and in your children’s music and video games!!!
It’s in the headlines.
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em.
It’s everywhere we look.
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em.
America’s answer to everything.
Shoot ’em. Bomb ’em.
We just celebrated “Memorial” Day.
I propose another holiday.
Memorabilia Day.
A day where we prop up the corpses of our friends and enemies alike, now reduced to memorabilia of our violent past.
Memorabilia Day.
 Oh look!!! There’s Daddy!!!
Memorabilia Day.
An idea whose time has come.

I’m all ears.

A Memorabilia Day artifact from a decade ago – Osama bin Laden (or whoever/whatever was doing the bin Laden work) in 2004:
A rebel leader? A double or even triple agent? A propped-up stick figure of a bad guy around whom the U.S. could rally its media-tranced sheeple, conveniently “buried at sea” after “something” went down in Pakistan? All or none of the above? We will never know. The truth of the matter really does not matter, because the words remain true no matter what their intent may have been.
Words matter.
Through the mouths of villains sometimes speak the gods.
Bet on it.

P.S. The above YouTube embed is an experiment. If it doesn’t work, here’s the URL. Go check out the link above as well. Study the difference between the CBS Miami affiliate’s coverage and the embedded vid.
Hmmmm…
I checked out the other major media coverage…same style as CBS. Not a word about race, only visuals that told the same story.
Corporate media. Some of the news, all of the time.
Hmmmm…
Well, it didn’t work. Sorry about that. My bad. Wrong vid. Check out the correct URL instead.

P.S. What is going on here regarding the short embed codes on YouTube and this site? Last time I tried to use a short embed code here…there are rarely any longer ones offered on YouTube…but it didn’t work. I was kindly given a longer one to use w/the proper URL but I guess I didn’t understand the instructions thoroughly.
Anybody?
Look around on the YouTube page you’re viewing for a check box that says “use old embed code”. It should show up just below the embed code box. I have noticed that some of the more recent uploads do not have this feature.
