My suggestion is that people start using a catchy hashtag, something like #nowimgonnavote, every time they see the Republicans do or say something outrageously stupid or insensitive. We need a viral campaign to turn people out to vote in November. If things play out the way they usually do, we’re not going to be in a better place next year than we are in this year, and this year is pretty horrible.
People need to make the connection between stupid shit and the need to vote. If you see rampant hypocrisy or science-denial or racism or homophobia or a war on reproductive choice and contraception or a total lack of empathy for the poor or for a POW or for victims of crime and natural disasters, then note it with a #nowimgonnavote hashtag.
Maybe people will get the idea that the way to end this madness is to participate in the political process.
that is actually an excellent idea. i’m on it.
Someday Democrats will learn, NO ONE can make anyone vote. People eventually lose interest because the cold brutal reality is: There are just way too many things in life to be occupied with.
BUt the real problem w/ progressives and democrats is thinking a hashtag is going to save us from falling further into the abyss of oligarchy and corporatocracy. But by all means as Booman likes to say “Please Proceed”
Eventually progressives are going to wake up and say “Oh, I get it now. No one in Washington really wants to empower people because that is a threat to their ambitious purpose”
Not yet….but as the progressives get older they are going to realize the beltway hucksterism involved.
But ask yourself this: Why on earth do you think anyone is going to give up a seat of power for “the people” THAT is not going to happen….ever.
and your solution is to do nothing?
You’re missing the whole point. There is in fact one thing that could conceivably happen that would make a gigantic difference. If the Democrats took control of the House, we would immediately see action on all kinds of important issues. It might not be enough, but we’re not even talking about the difference between good policy and bad policy. We’re talking about the difference between any policy at all and mindless obstruction.
And yes, people who lose elections do actually have to give up their seats of power. That’s how it works.
OT, but didn’t you have an interview yesterday? I hope it went well!
People follow people on Twitter. If those people talk about politics, then they get exposed to politics.
BooMan, I’m not sure if your reply to me was intended as a reply to someone else, or if you are trying to tell me in some oblique way that my OT personal question to Brendan was inappropriate.
yup, I replied to the wrong comment. Sorry.
Not a problem! It’s just that if you were trying to convey something to me, I wanted to be sure I was getting the right message.
I DID have an interview, and it DID go well (I think, knock wood). I should know in a couple of weeks.
They say that if you are getting interviews, you will get a job. It might not be this particular job, but you will get a job.
Keeping my fingers crossed that this is the one for you!
Me too!
Good idea.
Me likeeeeeeeeeeey!!!
There is no way Democrats can deliver the bucket list of what Progressives want, it is too daunting, too overwhelming & the political price will be huge if they complied w/ the progressive base.
I have some advice, enjoy your life, ignore what politician A is saying to Politician B.
You don’t have the money and none of us have the focus and energy to spend every waking moment fighting on Capitol Hill.
I’ve heard all of this before and the base is getting roped in again to shovel out more money only to be wheeled off and put in the bank account of political carnival barkers w/ pandering organizations that have no interest other than just protecting their nonprofit status.
if that’s true, why are you bothering to comment on a political blog?
Thanks for your concern, but #nowi’mgonnavote.
I didn’t get everything I want so I’m going to stomp off and play in my room.
I would love to see that hypothesis tested. It hasn’t been for almost 80 years.
Of course as usual progressives have done little to shape the races, issues, and candidates running. From little hope of having significant power even if they help deliver majorities.
Can someone demonstrate to me that people who follow politics on Twitter don’t vote?
Probably not. The target audience of non-voters would be single women, predominately working class. Few of whom today don’t have their phones glued to themselves.
Here’s another possibility:
#dontvotedontcomplain
FWIW
Great one on your part. Everyone should be pushing voting to all they see! #stopgopvote
Here is a link to a site that is pushing for people to vote via the Democratic party. Lists all information for each state on how to register and so on check it out pass it on to all you know https:/www.iwillvote.com.
I might suggest #AnotherReasonToVote
Or,
#voteagainstrepublicans
“But, but, but that might remove some good republicans.”
“So what? This is war.”
How about we make this viral, too: #thefirstfourwords, as in the first four words of the Second Amendment that always get left out of the discussion … why not make the idea that the Second Amendment is NOT about individual gun rights go viral? #awellregulatedmilitia could be another tag … I know we need voters, but really, we also NEED to turn the language around on the Second Amendment and educate people on it’s history if we want any kind of change. The words “well regulated” are in the freaking first four words of the amendment! The Left needs to use that to it’s advantage. That being said, I always encourage people to register to vote and to go to the polls and will continue to do so. Just a #hashtag thought provoked by the author as a possible way to address another pressing issue.
