This is the only DSCC SD ad I found on youtube. And it’s dreadful. SD voters already know enough about this and it’s why Rounds poll number have been steady as 40% and slightly below. All Weiland needed were attack ads with name captioned pictures of Rounds and Pressler — these guys want to cut Social Security and a cut to Weiland, this guy want’s to protect and raise Social Security. A couple more highlighting key differences between Rounds and Weiland would have added to the message.
Oh well, the DSCC screwed up in Maine (giving Collins another pass) WV, and MT too. All could have been competitive with early money and support.
We’ll never know because nothing has ever been done to yank off Collins’ fake cloak of “reasonable.” Bellows is a good enough candidate that had Collins been softened up early, she would have been a real contender. Plus, in a year with so many DEM retirements and DEM senators running for re-election in “red” states, no potential, and inexpensive, pick-up should have been ignored. Maine, WV, SD, and MT could have been put into play for less than what’s been spent in KY.
Weiland telling the DSCC to take down its ads may work in Wieland’s favor. Demonstrates that he’s not a DC DEM lackey and points out that Pressler is Reid’s guy.
Paul Davis’ latest ad is very good:
As is this on of Mark Pryor’s (he’s got another new one that’s weak)
Weiland isn’t Reid’s guy. Reid wanted Stephanie Herseth Sandlin to run. And she didn’t want to. No idea if it was because Weiland said he wouldn’t clear the way for her, or if she thought Rounds was unbeatable.
iirc Weiland wasn’t in the race when Sandlin declined to run. Losing a House seat as an incumbent isn’t the best place from which to mount a bid for the Senate. She probably couldn’t have won against Rounds.
Reid seems to have been a bit too front and center on these Senate races when Bennet is the head of the DSCC this cycle. Wonder if there’s an interesting story in the background that we’re not seeing.
I wouldn’t vote for Martha Coakley if you paid me serious money. The woman is a sociopath. She kept a man in prison for 18 years knowing he was innocent, just to keep her political cred.
Look up Gerald Amirault. It was one of those daycare child molestation witch hunt cases from the 1980s. From Wikipedia:
“The prosecution relied heavily on testimony from young children extracted through long sessions with therapists. Dorothy Rabinowitz, of the Wall Street Journal, wrote that “[o]ther than such testimony, the prosecutors had no shred of physical or other proof that could remotely pass as evidence of abuse”.[3] Among the accusations were, as summarized by Rabinowitz from court records, Amirault
had plunged a wide-blade butcher knife into the rectum of a 4-year-old boy, which he then had trouble removing. When a teacher in the school saw him in action with the knife, she asked him what he was doing, and then told him not to do it again, a child said. On this testimony, Gerald was convicted of a rape which had, miraculously, left no mark or other injury.” [3]
The “Prosecution” in this case was Martha Coakley. When the Parole Board unanimously decided to release Amirault, Coakley lobbied the Republican governor to keep him in prison. She got her way.
I would NEVER vote for that woman for any office, and I cannot fathom why some people do.
Sorry, Marie, but in my 50 years of following politics, I’ve never seen a more hapless campaigner (serious campaigner … I don’t count these tea party freaks) .
She insulted RedSox Nation prior to the senatorial debacle (“do you expect me to stand outside Fenway park and shake hands?”). This go around, she was absolutely gobsmacked when Worcester county conventioneers were not totally on board with her campaign … even tho she hadn’t made a single appearance in Worcester County.
Her public persona is not a likeable, and to top it off she is trying to come aross warm and fuzzy this time. Think Dick Nixon masquerading as Jimmy Carter.
Luckily, this IS Massachusetts. She’s got a chance.
Thanks for the validation of what I suspected. A chance because it’s MA, but she only wins if her opponent is equally lacking in likeability, charisma, and campaign skills. That’s why Scott Brown beat her.
For what it’s worth, Massachusetts voters almost never elevate their state attorney general to the governor’s office…and they’ve had lots of chances.
Also, as Charles Pierce pointed out earlier today, Baker seems to be the beneficiary of a double standard among Mass. politicos and reporters:
“There are better candidates than Martha Coakley. History has proven that. There are better candidates than Charlie Baker, and history has proven that, too. But, this time around, he gets credit for soft-pedaling the executive dickitude that sank him in 2010 while she has to fight the last battle, over and over again. T’ain’t fair.”
Coakley’s positions in this area, such as on raising the cap on the number of charter schools in the state, appear to be a work in progress. Baker would provide full-throated support for the kind of high standards, accountability, and innovation that will give all children in Massachusetts the opportunities they deserve.
IOW, Baker would privatize ALL the schools and this newspaper is fine with that. The editorial board are Republicans. Republicans have taken over talk radio and pretty much all the newspapers. There is no free and independent press. Not Coakley’s fault. Except for being a “me-too” Democrat in the Rahm Emanuel mode. But apparently, the primary voters of Massachusetts were fine with that.
I keep seeing these stupid newspaper endorsements that basically say, “Republicans are stupid crazy, but it’s ok because they don’t mean it.” Although in this case it’s more, “Accountability, you know, not privatization, but Make Our Schools Good.”
Lol, was it The Detroit Free Press or some jazz? I saw that endorsement. When I read it, I seriously kept thinking, “This is like a satire, right? You guys are saying you’re endorsing Snyder, but then just detailing why he sucks for irony.”
Actually, in this case it’s more like, “Republicans are stupid crazy, but it’s ok in this case because the legislature has a super majority of Democrats.”
It’s a slightly better argument even if not by much.
I remember in 2010 the MA establishment took some heat for being an Old Boys club that didn’t support her and so she lost. Does thus cast a new light on that line of thought?
Likely some truth in that. However, Elizabeth Warren got through that minefield and won. Why couldn’t the well experienced Coakley manage what a political novice could?
Several candidates (including Mike Capuano … whom you DO NOT FUCK WITH) were strongarmed into not campaigning in the primary. I know this, because I backed Mike. He’s not a great guy but the man could give George Wallace campaign lessons.
I called this.

Iunno, I love Shenna Bellows, but I don’t think Collins can be beaten, especially in a non-presidential election.
I’d really like Bellows to run again, though.

She’s the Alex Sink of Massachusetts.
Are they done giving her chances to blow offices?

It’s the philosophy, recommended right here to me, that any Democrat is better than any Republican so you MUST vote the straight party ticket.
I wish I knew who she was blackmailing. There were several D’s who were strongarmed into backing out.
She’s got something on someone.
Sorry I feel ALL of the TPGOPers fit the definition.
Can someone tell me how she keeps getting through primaries? She seems to have no real constituency there in MA.
Democratic Party primary voters nominated Dukakis and Kerry.
It’s not as if she hasn’t won election:
1998 – DA Middlesex Co.
2006 – AG MA
2010 – AG MA – re-elected
Jan 2010 lost MA Senate special election to Scott Brown
But some people just don’t have and can’t develop the charisma and/or campaign chops needed to win elections for the highest offices.

That’s how I interpreted it.
I keep seeing these stupid newspaper endorsements that basically say, “Republicans are stupid crazy, but it’s ok because they don’t mean it.” Although in this case it’s more, “Accountability, you know, not privatization, but Make Our Schools Good.”
A Detroit paper detailed all the reasons why Snyder sucks as governor and why Schauer would be so much better, then endorsed Snyder for re-election.
Lol, was it The Detroit Free Press or some jazz? I saw that endorsement. When I read it, I seriously kept thinking, “This is like a satire, right? You guys are saying you’re endorsing Snyder, but then just detailing why he sucks for irony.”
Nope. lol
Yes, that’s the one. Difficult for The Onion to compete when regular newspapers display such craziness.
Actually, in this case it’s more like, “Republicans are stupid crazy, but it’s ok in this case because the legislature has a super majority of Democrats.”

Save for a few obvious exceptions, the MA democrats have always been a disappointing bunch of assholes.

Personality?
balls.
