I see Suge Knight may have crossed the final line beyond which society will not allow him to walk around free, ever again. I’m disappointed that this originated on the set of a movie about N.W.A., because it will reinforce every negative stereotype about that group and it will completely shutdown any thoughtful discussion of the politics of early rap and their positive influence.
We’ll get all the gangsta. We’ll get none of the legitimate beef.
Thankfully there are a lot of thoughtful indie rappers out there.
Speaking of early rap history, I cannot recommend this series of comics highly enough…
Hip Hop Family Tree
I came across it on Boing Boing originally but it was a bit of a pain to navigate through all the episodes in order so I just bought the book. Hopefully the redo on The Nib has better navigation but if not it is always nice to support the artist!
Whatever the consequences for Death Row’s legacy, Suge Knight is a terrible person and probably should have remained in jail in the first place.
I suppose that’s one way to look at it. On the other hand, corrupt gangsters have always been pretty good at co-opting legitimate grievances to line their pockets. It seems to me that’s what the hippety hoppers have been doing for years…. but what do I know? I’m just a clueless middle aged white guy.
