I’ve seen Kathleen Matthews appear on her husband’s Hardball program a few times, but I don’t really know anything about her beyond what they’re writing in their profiles now that she’s expressed interest in running for Congress.
If she winds up serving in Congress, which doesn’t seem unlikely, it will be interesting to see, potentially, both Chris Matthews and Bill Clinton in their roles as prominent spouses of prominent female politicians. I guess Bill auditioned for the role when Hillary was serving in the Senate, but being First Gentleman would be a different kettle of fish.
Ms. Matthews would be taking over Chris Van Hollen’s Maryland seat, and Van Hollen would be trying to replace Barbara Mikulski in the Senate.
I’m a little surprised that Van Hollen wants to make the leap to the Senate because he seems on track to be Speaker one day in the not too distant future.
With how gerrymandered the House is, I think it’s highly unlikely Democrats regain control of the House for a long time. Even with incompetent clowns like Orange Julius running the show, I don’t think the GOP will lose control of the House for the rest of the decade, and frankly not until demography makes Democrats winning the presidency a virtual certainty. So I can see why van Hollen would decide to move on up, where Dems are likely to at least get back in the majority next election.

If he’s running for Senate, and hopefully losing if Donna Edwards runs, it means that Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer aren’t going anywhere for a long while. Also, not too distant future? 2020? 2022?
One senate term is six years, and this one won’t be up again until 2022. So, is it really that long to wait?
House probably won’t flip until 2030. Besides Dems are married to seniority. Boyer and Pelosi are going to hold their seats until they keel over in them.
What makes you think the Democrats will get the House back any time soon? Will the DNC and DCCC stop being a complete mess?
The GOP regularly implodes. Fully enough that a bunch of expected to be ballot-filler Democrats win. Once resuscitated, the GOP takes down and out most of the ballot-filler Democrats. And the cycle begins all over again.
Absolutely! If Democrats, who held House, Senate, and the Presidency in 2008-2010 and were swept into power with a mandate to reform the banks and fix the economy had actually done that they would still hold all three. Most voters don’t really pay attention to policy. If they are happy, they vote for incumbents. If they are unhappy, they vote against incumbents. Policy has next to nothing to do with it. This is due to the binary nature of the parties. It’s either-or, unlike Europe where a multitude of parties combine in coalitions after the elections. It seems to me that Democrats, in particular, seem to feel they can ignore the public’s desires as long as they can portray the Republicans as worse. It doesn’t work like that.
Democrats were swept into Congressional seats in the 2006 and 2008 election cycle. They did well enough during their first two years that they were further rewarded in 2008. After that they had to stand aside for Obama’s bi-partisany agenda. Translation: not going to make Clinton’s 1993-94 mistake of relying exclusively on the Congressional Democratic majority and getting his butt kicked in 1994. I’m getting Republican/conservative politicians, military, and business folks in my tent from day one. Congressional Democrats are supposed to shut up and support whatever GOP-DEM compromise legislation my team comes up with.
heh. Didn’t work any better than it had in 1993-1994 except to move legislation and public policy to the right of where is was in 1993-1994.
He’s going to sell us out on Social Security ANY DAY NOW!!
Already tried and failed. Didn’t have the votes in the 2009-11 Dem House and 2009-13 Dem Senate, and after six years of total obstructionism from the GOP, Obama is done trying to play nice with them or unlike Clinton, when the GOP was in the front seat, is unwilling to give them 90% of what they want and call it a good and fair compromise.
She is likely to find that nepotism and name recognition only go so far. I doubt that she will do well. What does she stand for? Who is she?
“I’m the wife of that blowhard who yells at the TV all the time on MSNBC weekday evenings!”
Compelling as watching snow (try to) melt this winter so far…
Last I heard, she worked for Marriott. It’s a very anti-worker company. Also, doesn’t Willard have connections to that company?
