Here’s a quick review of my last 36 hours or so.
Knowing that I had not driven my car in a while but would be needing it, and knowing that it has a slow oil leak, I bought some oil. But when I tried to get the hood open, the release wouldn’t work. After a few tries, the apparatus broke completely rendering my car totally useless until I have this repaired.
While doing editing on the last book review for the upcoming issue of the Washington Monthly, the carriage return on my keyboard stopped working. This morning the function returned for a while but then the ‘p’ failed, and then the ‘o’ and then the whole upper-right quadrant. A trip to the Apple Store revealed that it is not worth fixing and I need a whole new machine.
Around noon today I remembered that I had a dentist appointment at one pm. I cleared my busy schedule and hustled over there only to discover that my insurance company thinks my dentist gave me an unnecessary crown and expects me to pay an extra $500+ to the guy who gave me the unnecessary procedure. Then I got to sit there for an hour while he drilled on my teeth.
So, now my face is numb, I’m typing on a cramped little Bluetooth keyboard, I have to come up with money I don’t have to pay my dentist, fix my car, and replace my computer, and I have a deadline to finish my work on the Washington Monthly stuff.
And I thought the flu was bad.
Time to buy a Chromebook.

LOL.
My computer would crash constantly with that little operating memory and processing power.
The new Surface Hybrid is quite good.
Well that makes me feel better about my day. So I’m flying down to Columbia to visit my ex gf because I think we can make it work. Flight gets delayed 2 hours. Departure changed to 3:37…I go to board at the gate at around 2:55, and they tell me the shuttle already left and there’s nothing they can do. So I go to the desk and change my ticket to 7:12. I’m sitting in my chair already annoyed at being in an airport terminal for 8 hours, and overhear on the speaker they’re boarding for Columbia. About five others are in the same situation as I am, turns out, and the plane needed to take everyone off for maintenance. I ask if I can change my ticket back and they tell me the flight is now full.
So yeah, I’m just chilling in the airport terminal. Misery needs and loves some company…but your day sounds worse than mine by far. I’m sorry, Martin.
I hope she makes it up to you when you arrive. Good luck.
Thanks. If it goes the way I hope, I think this is “it”.
I hope you’re right. Here’s hoping.
Warning – and I speak from experience – ex-gf’s that you reconcile with have a tendency to become spouses.
That’s a good thing.
I’m sorry, BooMan. That would all completely suck in a normal situation, but on top of losing your brother it’s way too much.
If you need money for the computer, or the dentist, please start a fundraiser here at the pond. I would definitely contribute and I imagine I am not alone.
Big hugs, BooMan.
Uprated for the fundraiser.
He should just go with a patreon.
Some days it doesn’t pay to get out of bed.
Surprised that on an Apple a keyboard isn’t replaceable. You may have noticed that I’m having trouble with my Microsoft keyboard shift key. $10-$20 is all it takes for a replacement. I strongly suggest that you buy an “IBM” PC, preferably from a small shop that assembles them instead of junk like HP. Don’t pay pay Windoze, put Linux on it, pay the guy at the shop or ask a friend if you can’t do it yourself. I’m a thousand miles away or I’d do it gratis.
Dentists, Dental insurance, what can I say? My policy wouldn’t let me have my routine exams because I had a root canal earlier in the year. The regular dentist did an exam and sent me to a specialist who did his own exam. BCBS says that’s my two exams for the year!
Nov 9 starts open season and I’m switching to MetLife.
Unnecessary crown? Didn’t the dentist submit a pre-approval? Do they expect you to put a partial in a glass at night?
My daughter has an old spark plug cable tying down her hood, but I don’t recommend it.
Just bought tires tonight for eight bills. Cheer up! My sister was hit by an SUV charging out from a side street earlier in the week and her 16 year old 45,000 mile garage kept Corolla is totaled. Luckily my sister is OK, but now how does she get a decent car for $4200?
They don’t make the part anymore and to fix it would cost enough to make it more rational to get a new machine. I wore out the keyboard. Dude says this is pretty rare.
Check e-bay for (lightly) used. I’ve bought some good used stuff on eBay.
apple keyboard?
may have one
dont you have a macbook air?
Used to have an Air. Right now I have a refurbished MacBook Pro.
Apple’s business model has always leaned heavier on repeal and replace than fixes and tweaks.
Forgot to add that I’m waiting for a friend to come and fix my furnace.
The furnace works! Low of 36F tonight. Just in time.
You’re a week early to boot. Couldn’t you wait until Friday the 13th?
BTW, BooMan, the piece on Paywall Journalism in the last issue is excellent.
yeah, it is. And we have several other pieces that are at least that good.
I know you weren’t begging, but I put a little bit in your Paypal bucket. I wish it could be more, but maybe it will inspire more donations. We all get snowed under sometimes.
Good luck! Donna
But at least you’re not Ben Carson. BTW, is it possible to plug a USB keyboard into the Apple’s port? Do a fundraiser.
